This is my second favorite flower! I walk down a back lane from work and noticed this plants seed pods last fall, and took some home with me since they had a unique fuzzy structure. About a month later, one night I thought I had squirrels in my place as I started hearing random beads hitting different parts of my walls.. The next morning, I noticed a bunch of black seeds everywhere on the floor of my kitchen; they had been exploding across the living room on the counter they were sitting on, so I collected 24 seeds and germinated 8 about 2 days ago, and they all already started sprouting out of my indoor smart pots. I've never grown a (legal) flower indoors before, and we're about to get a serious heatwave, so I will make sure to keep these seedlings in a cool damp room with a small grow light. I plan on keeping them indoors and planting a few outside my apartment in a random shaded spot, so I can come back in 20 years and see how they're doing :)

There is nothing more exciting then to wait and see what colour you get from a lupin you have grown from seed. They are usually all different varieties and shades of purple...all amazing.

One of my favourite plants! Little note for anyone who lets their West Country lupines go to seed - They do need staking if you do so. They get so many seedpods and the soft fuzz on them holds on to so much water, they are very prone to flopping over after heavy rain. (The seedlings also won't flower in the same elaborate patterns as the original plant, but are still going to be beautiful) I'll bookmark this one and look forward to rewatching in in the winter for the gorgeous backgroud display. Thanks for sharing!

Many of the native lupines of California are easy or no-care and prefer dryer conditions, and bloom into summer. The low bush forms can be evergreen. For example Lupinus albifrons is a dryer conditions form with silvery leaves and is evergreen, and Lupinus succulentus is a more green leaf form that grows in the desert and explodes into bloom in the Antelope Valley alongside the poppies every year. Lupinus nanus and Lupinus bicolor are not a bush form but can cover a field in purple each year, just tossing seed out in fall. Lupinus formosus is a desert lupine that tolerates even more heat than many of the other California native lupines. I would love to hear if anyone is growing California varieties elsewhere. These hybrids highllighted in this video are beautiful, but it is wonderful that there are no care and no-irrigation forms that will grow in many dryer areas.

I’m going to try to grow these in Southern spain. I was going to start the seed this week (mid October) but based on this video, I might need to wait a few more weeks 🥵. Cool isn’t how I would describe my weather at the moment.

Great information! I winter sowed lupine last year and they came up great but when I planted them out into a sunny area they started to die and I didn’t know why. Now I know. We were also in a drought and the soil was not right. I’m currently winter sowing more. Maybe this year I’ll have better luck thanks to your video.

I live in north central WA (High desert, 6A) and they are weeds here. We have white blooming now. (Everywhere!)The purple ones will bloom after the white. This is why I don’t understand it being said that they need acidic soil. Ours is very high alkaline and they are everywhere. And spread like wildfire.

You can find multiple varieties of Lupine in our stores at this time of year! Or, if you're not local to the Northeast Ohio area, we recommend checking with your local independent garden center!

You cannot plant the lupin seeds later than mid March in any climate than does not have very cold spring and very cool summer. I planted mine in mid April and nothing sprouted until Octomber the same year. They need cold stratification and cool weather to germinate or they will just sit there and do nothing until these requirements are met. They are very winter hardy in the UK.

Started lupin seedlings indoors , in a biodegradable container, how tall do you let them get before transplanting ?
@PetittiGardenCenters Жыл бұрын
When the lupin have developed 3 or more true sets of leaves they should be mature enough to transplant into larger pots or into a prepared garden/landscape space. Be sure to acclimate the seedlings slowly into the outdoors over 2 weeks, acclimating them to temperatures but also to sunlight in late April/early May.

bought two plants last year and both came back this spring but one is very bushy and huge and the other one is much smaller even though they were planted 16 inches apart. So odd but i cant wait for those blooms! Will it reseed by itself or do I have to collect seeds and start them fresh as seedlings?
@misstaramisuful2 жыл бұрын
Mine are same. I have 3 planted in a row. One is always much larger than the others.
@PetittiGardenCenters2 жыл бұрын
Sometime the one plant was disturbed by weather or critter and the other not, which could explain why it didn't come back for you. Ideally, leave one flowering stalk on each plant so it will develop seed. The pods will turn grayish-tan and sometimes the seeds can rattle around the pod when dry. Take a portion of seeds to sow around the plants in September (after soaking for 24 hours), then save a portion to seed indoors in February or out in May of next year.

Stick to the native lupin, a shorter plant with 5-11 leaflets. Usually dont come in a ton a colors like these in the video which are NOT NATIVE. Protect the endangered Karner Blue butterfly. Native plants are less maintenance.

@@ssoy9052 for anyone worried about slugs, add diatomaceous earth in with your soil mixture and then apply it as a top-dressing around the base of the plant stem. It also acts as a source of slow release silica
