I went from a 335d xdrive to an M4. Loved the 35 and great in all weather, best all-rounder I’ve ever had - but in the dry, the M4 wins hands down and has me smiling more often!

As an ageing ordinary family guy who can't afford an m car, have been driving a 320d since 2016 and it's more than satisfactory both in terms of reliability and performance.

@@gersi8351 I get 1.89l/10km ≈ 12.4mpg in my M4 mixed driving. 0.99l/10km over a 650km journey all highway driving at 110-240kph but mostly 120kph.

Given how close they actually were in performance I'd definitely go dirty smoker. The price of a M car plus the extra trips to the fuel station...makes a well sorted 30d or 35d a better deal. If money is no object then yeah M car

M4 will cost around 3x the money to feed and maintain over time,they become absolute money pits once they hit 5-6 years old or around 70/80k miles,the parts are astronomical compared to non M parts,plus on today's roads having the instant monster torque from a tuned diesel is what you want,most roads and speed limits aren't as suited to high revving machines.

The torque of the diesels gives them an advantage off the line, and the 35D with X-Drive speaks for itself. Me personally im petrol all the way but good to see the potential of a tuned diesel

No it didn’t. M4 just struggling for grip first drag. 435d flys cause it’s 4wd. Torque, more specially low down power helps most when you are cruising then what to shoot off suddenly without dropping gears.

@@PiOfficial exactly sure hp is defined by torque at specific rpm but in 95-99% of the cases the one with the best power to weight at the wheels will win unless traction limited

Diesel all the way. 435d xdrive Gran Coupe for me though. Dark side are good tuners. I think once you do the DPF delete, EGR and swirl flap mods, (the potential problem areas with these engines), the diesel engines are the ones to go for. You still get great mpg with the diesel engines as well. 435d x-drive going to 0 - 60 in 3.5 secs is just awesome!

I had a 435i GC M-sport stage2 everything nice. But I bought an M4. What decided it was the massive difference in chassi. But I miss 435i a lot. Best all around car I've ever had.

Darkside Ryan does magic on diesels. M4 had a good tune as NVM Mabz one of best in the buisness. Shows how well these mappers do and how reliable the cars are ! Great Video Well Done !

@@lloyd.8272 like for like mods is not important in the real world but value for money is. They all probably cost about the same if not, the diesels might be a bit cheaper especially when you consider fuel economy.

@@lloyd.8272 yeah but engine for engine they are not comparable. The m4 is a twin turbo stage one petrol running 480bhp and the 30d is a single hybrid turbo running 455bhp which would cost a hell of a lot less than an m4 and it just finished behind the m4 … I’d take the 30d all day every day

Watching this shows people real life examples of how a car will do with an m car. Who gives 2 shits about a multi million pound car vs something else nobody can drive? Yes some of their races are good….but Bikes vs hyper cars? Come on now…..get real 🤣🤣

Better Than to see three different builds and be able to compare how the builds effected the cars relative to each other and to their stock engines? And as was said these are real life cars with real owners, with real mods. I don’t care if a Bugatti Chiron can beat an f1 car in a drag race I’ll never drive either of them. And on top of that half of carwows content is just reviews of disgusting electric BMWs that haven’t even came out yet they barely race anything good anymore. Officially gassed is clear of carwow.

A M4 stage 1 with just those mods even an early model will achieve over 500bhp and 542 lb/ft quite easily. So the map on this one is quite soft. Better tyres on the M4 and wider too. So better traction even in wet conditions. With less torque than the diesels. Has better chance to get power down. Overall an expected result for the M4.

'Perfect daily' - That's a common misconception from 10 years ago... Diesel cars are no longer £30 a year to tax and diesel is no longer 1p different from petrol. 2019+ 435d xDrive is £520 tax and the fact diesel is like 10p more per litre than petrol cancels out the extra mpg. I'd much rather run a petrol daily with less going wrong, same running costs and be able to rev it past 5k. The government is going to extort diesel drivers wayyyyy before they do it with petrol.

@@1993j yes and no. I hear what you’re saying but the fact is if you do long journeys a petrol can’t compete wit the diesel mpg. My car gets 70MPG at 70MPH. Both have got their perks and faults. Looking forward to getting some V8 petrol builds going

I had a 2015 435d. I loved that car more than oxygen. This video is life for me. Unfortunately due to financial issues I now drive my dad's mk5 convertible astra. Understeer personified is that car. It's painful to say. Hopefully one day I'll get a 4 series again 🙏

@@derekporter66 dpf delete and downpipe was £250, front mount intercooler was £300, decat was £100, remap £250 and xhp stage 3 gearbox map £300.. So all in about £1200 and should be about 390-420bhp going off other builds. 0-62 in 3.7s and 1/4 mile in 11.7.. Ready for stage 3

@@derekporter66 n57 isn't near as good as b58 for 100-200 runs, it's strengths are 0-100mph.. About 10 seconds on 100-200. Mpg is right foot variable.. At worst 24mpg when gunning it everywhere but on eco mode driving like Gary Cartwright (linked above) about 50-52mpg..

Great to see some love for diesels on this channel. Diesels might lose out on the race by not being as responsive as petrol. It's just in their nature, however in the real world. If you do moderate to high mileage a day or got a somewhat heavy car, it's all about the torque. Considering those diesel engines don't ever have big performance mods, just removal or restrictions and faster spooling turbos. They are seriously impressive

That's the thing, though... "In the real world", these two diesels aren't road legal, might not pass MOT and would land big fines if a BiB knows cars. Granted though, for a given performance level, a diesel is going to be easier to live with in terms of fuel consumption... But those emissions systems these cars have had removed can result in costly bills if/when they go wrong. (And FWIW, yes, my daily is diesel as at 30k+ miles a year, petrol doesn't make sense)

@@EnglishTMTB it depends on the tune. Generally the EGR valves/flaps can lead to more harm than good if they fail or arent cleaned regularly. All depends on what mods are done and how well they are accounted for in the tune. Diesel tuning is a little bit more sensitive than petrol but if the tune is good (not toorich/lean), the DPF is fitted before the test and maybe asmall bit of kerosone throw in the pure a bit cleaner it should pass the test

@@rotatingglasssafe Passing the test doesn't make it legal though - it just means you've gotten away with it... Removing emissions equipment that came from the factory is illegal straight up. You're not wrong, really, though - there's a huge difference in emissions between a well maintained and cared for engine and a neglected machine that it's owner regards as a whitegood... It's yet another case of one size fits all regulations being a laughable waste of time and injustice to many.

@@EnglishTMTB ah yes if we are going down that rabbit hole them yes changing anything that would overall effect the efficiency of the engine's ability to reduce it's emissions would render it illegal but if that's the case than all car drivetrain related car modifications are illegal. Something as simple as a cheap aftermarket muffler. But really on the open road emissions are less of an issue it's cities where more should be encouraged or take public transport

@@rotatingglasssafe up to a point, a lot of mods could be questionable... DPF/EGR deletes are a little more cut and dried, though. Again, it doesn't necessarily upset me that people do it... But would I want to drive something on the road that risks a big fine? No

That second drag between the M and the 435 was too close to tell, that was a draw. M4 guy messed up on first attempt with gears. Great video as always 👌

M4 is slower vs 435d stage 2 at 400m..stick m4 does 12.5 about like a stage 1 435d..stage 2 435d made low to mid 11s ..stock m4 doesn't go under 12 sec

@@easyerc2226 I would say the wet track is probably a fairy significant advantage for the xdrive. Given how close the second drag was, I doubt it’d beat the M4 on a dryer track

Now lets all address the 🐘in the room. What is the price difference for a standard m4 vs a mapped 430D or 435D all the same year? How close would they really be in real life to the standard m4? Speaking from xp there would be little or nothing in it🤔. However the diesel has better mpg lower purchase price, insurance & road tax. But would still love a m4 much better exhaust note, exterior & interior styling. Gr8 vid btw👍

I think the soaking wet conditions stopped the m4 taking both races. It would have been a total different story in the dry. It wouldn’t have lost any of those races

I think the soaking wet conditions hindered the 30d even more as the 1000nm torque will struggle a lot more to put the power down. In the dry I reckon the 30d would have been a lot closer to the m4

The 430 would be a hell of alot quicker in the dry,can hardly lay any of that torque down when it's damp,1000nm is different gravy when it grips in dry,feels like you've been pinged from a bungee cord.

Diesel torque apart from some of the new EV's has always been good. Back in the day had an old 1.9 PD TDi at Darkside the bhp and torque were impressive even by some of todays standards. Those guys know their sh1t!

Reason I like Audi is because of the Quattro on almost all of their cars. Minus complete base models. I do love the 6cyl bmw diesel though.

Darkside developments know their stuff with diesel engines, had my ibiza 2.0td tuned there and had no problems at all after 6 years of ownership. Own a 340i nowadays but if I went back to diesel I would be taking my car straight to these guys!

Would be interested to see how a proper Custom Stage 1 M4 compares. BootMod is just generic tuning. Most companies are getting 530 BHP from stage 1 tuning on an M4.

@@jamboSAFC tuning isn't just about peak numbers though. Even if you are after peak numbers to brag at car meets, 530hp on one dyno could be 510hp on another or 580hp is you go to DMS 😂. Mabs at NVM will tune a car on the dyno but always logs and tweeks it on road tests. Is that so much different to remote custom tuning via Bootmod?

altho in the 2nd drag race the x drive won, i think the gap cudve been the same as the first draggy cuz looking at the engine noise when they showed footage of him inside the car it looked like he skipped a gear or sumthing.

Just unfortunate that conditions were not in favour for any car, especially high powered diesel's with houseful of torque! 430d would of been cutting power for the majority of that roll race likewise the 435d x to a certain extent. M4 had the advantage in my opinion just for that reason having less torque and more bhp will always help in shitty conditions!
