Here in Australia, there’s still plenty of Camrys from the 90s and 2000s around. Seems like most of them have faded paint, missing hubcaps, scratched and dented panels, etc but hey they’re still running. Most of their competitors from that time aren’t seen much anymore. The 4 cylinder ones are very reliable motors and fuel wise are decent in the city and really good on the motorway. They’re great cars.

On a different subject, I know it's just a saying but if you drove trains for a living like I have for 19 years, you wouldn't say pulls like a train. Trains measure their acceleration with a calendar rather than a stopwatch and wheelslip can make that acceleration anything but linear.

Never knew these made it to the UK, though shouldn't be surprised. This was built in Australia and sold well and still see them regularly on the road. Neighbour has a four cylinder base model. The base model came with the 3.0 V6 option here and was taken up a lot. A former neighbour of my mum's had a white V6 wagon as recently as 2019 and even though the rear doesn't look spacious from outside, the cargo area is surprisingly deep and cavernous when you peek inside. Toyota Australia also built the larger Avalon sedan (based on the first American model built from 1994) here from 2000 -2005 (with minor facelift about 2003) with the same 3.0 V6 and while it didn't sell well to the public,v it was popular as a taxi on LPG. I hired an Avalon for a day in 2002 and it was honestly the best car I have driven. It soaked the bumps like no other yet handled well. We're the French involved lol? The slightly lighter weight Camry must feel like a rocket on wheels with that motor. It's not just the acceleration, it's how smoothly it does it. PS: these look really sharp with a set of nice aftermarket mag wheels. The styling copped a lot of criticism for blandness, but I always quite liked the look of this model.
@carlthompson98813 жыл бұрын
Totally. It is sort of bland but a very composed design. We didn't get the wagon and only a very limited range here in UK. I always loved them. Actually your country had the coolest cars in my view. Holden HQ and the Falcons. Big as a car needs to be without excess unlike America. . . . .
@Petrolblog3 жыл бұрын
You're right about the acceleration. It's the smoothness that impresses the most, along with the unexpected acceleration. Cornering isn't a strong point, but I can live with that.
@theopauw28304 жыл бұрын
This generation has grown on me recently. Here in South Africa they are quite rare as they were only introduced in 2001 and replaced soon thereafter (talking under correction but I think the reason was that the older ones were locally built and these were imported). We still have loads of the preceding generation on the road, and the replacement was also more popular.

Funny these are super common here in the US but here's why they are super reliable even over 20 years later they're everywhere here in the southern US. Most are well over 200,000 miles even 300,000+ miles! The quality of parts they used in the interior they hardly show any wear and they're cheap in the used market.Most in the Northern US succumb to road salt and rusted out. Tempted to do the interior LED upgrade - seen some good results. Definitely need to upgrade the headlight bulbs, because the OEM lights are like candles!
@dbfcrell83003 жыл бұрын
@@Petrolblog Best thing I ever did toy my Camry was the LEDS. If you do the exterior front and rear directionals in LED (which I highly recommend), you may have to replace the flasher relay with a low load one in order for them to blink. Also, if you do the 3rd brake light with LEDs, you may lose radio reception every time you hit the brake pedal (I do). It wasn't that big a deal to replace the flasher, but getting the old one out was much harder than it needed to be, if I remember correctly. Here's the flasher I used which works fine; www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XAU66V4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Enjoyed your video . Yes , your car over here in California is valued car .. most cars of that age have over 250k on them and still run perfect ..yup , I have one , in fact sevral toyota and Lexus autos.. have you checked you drain tubes from you sun roof ! Could be water problem in trunk ..also in US. Most of those head lights are yellowed by sunlight ..check your gromets and put tiny drain hole at buttom of light buckets . Have done many VOLVOS the same way ! Thanks you much for video 😉
@Petrolblog4 жыл бұрын
Cheers Garrett. Drainage channels were done this time last year, but it's probably time to do them again. Good point about the headlights. The nearside unit has got water inside, so I'll drill a hole. Did the same with Elaine Beige and it worked a treat. Enjoy your Camry!

My 1999 Toyota Camry V6 - five speed manual transmission - has 388,000 miles on it. Bought it new - best car I've ever owned. No rust - it's an Arizona car - working on 400K miles then 500K miles

@@Petrolblog you can't find a car like that in today's market. Easy to work on (I do all the work myself) easy to find parts and I love the AC!!! Ice cold years later!! Toyota has the best AC systems in the world hands down.

I may well buy one. Agree with you totally. It looks American an that's s good thing. USA, Canada, Oz always had better taste. Bargain beautiful laid back bullet proof car. Yes ideally tan leather. One big question- can you hear the V6 enough to enjoy the sound from inside? That's the only reason I'd pay for more fuel and insurance over the 2.2. (I don't care about performance so I would get the 24mpg )
@Petrolblog3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can certainly hear the sound of the engine - it's wonderful. I've done a terrible video of a drive back from the MOT station - you can hear the engine on that. I guess an upgraded exhaust would make it sound even better.

Camry. Be different. It looks American and its elegant Don't be Arrogant, for that's what BMWs are, though granted, the E39 is as good a car

I agree these cars are too rare in Europe. Europeans usually buy fancier German cars if they want a bigger car. They are fine for the first 10 years but often become money pits after! My next car probably will be a Toyota Camry however rare they are in here because these are legendarily cheap to run long term and got that big car comfort and motorway ride.
@Petrolblog4 жыл бұрын
I could make a strong case for most Toyota and Honda models over the German equivalents. Good luck with the search for your next Camry,

I too have always loved the shape and design of these, though the boot it a little too long in profile (but that’s just nitpicking) used to be a couple up here in South Yorkshire when they were new but long gone now, I always thought we only got the 2.2 four pot over here if I’d known there was a 3.0 V6 I would have sought one out (as is I ended up with its younger and equally rare cousin, GS430)
@Petrolblog4 жыл бұрын
So glad I'm not the only one who appreciates the XV20 Camry. You're right about the side profile - the Camry looks a little odd from some angles. Do you still own the GS430? Fine cars.
@carlthompson98813 жыл бұрын
I LOVE the long boot / tail. That's one if the car's most attractive features. Maybe why it didn't sell in UK. Most cars here look to short. Lo g equals elegant in my view
