As a lover of modern architecture, this video was a feast. The backdrop of modernist/brutalist buildings really enhanced the subject van. Made perfect sense--urban car, urban setting--but stylishly so. Brilliantly done (as usual).

@b_mb49486 жыл бұрын
Luke Skywalker Actually I know very little. What I do know however is that their first car was the 360, and from what I can remember it has a little air cooled, 2-stroke engine - hence the ringa dinga ding dong sound effects *;)* It was only in the later years when Boxer engines became the norm with their different length headers that the car gained it's classic well known deep grumble. Sounds good.

To think that the Subaru 360 Buggy and Van were even smaller than the Volkswagen Beetle is quite mind-blowing. Subaru did have some very humble beginnings
Using my wife's name with pic. Hi Scott thought that looked familiar, especially since are vans paint jobs are almost identical. The van I own was purchased from Ed, the Guru of Subaru's. He and his wife owned it for 40 years and was his daily driver. This is the third van I've owned since my dad gave me my first 360 sedan back about 1980. I love driving it. Only time I got intimidated in it driving on the freeway for 55 miles from Lancaster, CA to Santa Clarita on Christmas day. Slowest speed was 45 and fastest was 70mph thanks to a sedan rear end. Mark

Great vehicle, shame the owner doesn't really have anything to say about it. "It looks interesting" - ok. I don't know how you find these people, but if you came to me, I could gush about the reasons Subaru's 360 is crucial in the history of the Japanese automobile. About its superb engineering, about how it broke away from imitation and copy-cat designs that were the norm in Japan during the 1950s. About the crazy story of how it came to the U.S. (I've spoken to Harvey about Malcolm, and I've corresponded with the owners of the docks where Subaru 360s were unloaded). About Ed Parsil and the Subaru 360 Driver's Club, and on and on. And this guy has basically nothing to say. Nice.

They copied the VW almost to the T. The sedan is a direct copy of the bug, the van is a copy of the combi and the truck is a copy of the single cab. They still to date copy vw designs, what you talking about? You think most people care about you going on about the history of the vehicle for a hour or do they just want to see the vehicle?
@mescko6 жыл бұрын
You don't want to go all Asperger's in this sort of video (no offense, I historically exhibit some on those tendencies myself, mainly the unwitting anorakish enthusiasm and verbosity over minutiae). The video is short and is mainly meant to convey the owners' enthusiasm. Perhaps you haven't seen many Petrolicious videos, this is typical.
@furripupau6 жыл бұрын
Your comment is astonishingly ignorant. The 360 uses an inline twin, 2-cylinder, 2-stroke engine. The VW horizontally opposed, four cylinder, four stroke. The 360's engine was inspired by the 2-cylinder, 2-stroke engine used in the Lloyd LP 300, it has no technological link to the VW powerplant at all. The 360 made use of aluminum and fiberglass to reduce weight. The doors in the initial models used sliding glass so the interior of the door could be used for storage space - as in a Renault 4cv, or a British Mini - unlike in the VW. The 360, from an engineering standpoint is rather impressive for how cleverly the design reduces weight and maximizes interior space, using many of the same tricks that would be used later in the British Mini (10" wheels, transverse mounted engine, and so on) but is never given due credit. Calling it a copy of the VW is just stupid.
