To anyone looking at this video with the aim of getting an idea of Scottish Country Dancing, please note, one is not supposed to dance with one's hands behind one's back.

I agree this is a poor display

In the musical folk arts, there's absolutely one way to do any one thing ... except when there isn't. Wonder if hand position appears on some ancient stone tablets ...

@@jimmymahone5420 Oh yes, on that old block of granite at RSCDS! 😀My view is get out there and do it like these folks, not sit at a screen and be an armchair critic. Imagine, as far away from Scotland as one can get and yet still turning out to enjoy this... until the killjoys come along! That's what's killing Scottish Country Dance off. It's lovely when people of all ages and abilities and into their dotages can do their own thing and still enjoy the joie de vivre and cameraderie without some sour puss putting a dampener on. If you want to learn correctly there are a whole slew of official RSCD instruction videos on KZbin. I've been a victim of those tut-tutters in classes and at dances, and it's soul destroying. It should have no place in something which was meant to be a fabulous reason for all getting together and letting our hair down. That's why it's called folk dancing!

The Hamish MacBeth mystery, “Death of an Honest Man” brought me here.

I used to prefer the Double Petronella version so that you are dancing more & less stunned mullet watching.

Petronella seems to have mutated since I learnt to do it in 1966 in Kamusinga!

To FBDBmusic, definitely a capitol offence. Dancing can be fun and enjoyable done properly. The more accurately, the more fun. No point in not trying to do it well.

Perhaps the gentleman was having a good time - not sure that that's a capital offence. Maybe that's why ceilidh dancing is more popular than Scottish Country Dancing. One is supposed to enjoy oneself :)

But it's easier to do it the correct way than the wrong way and it looks better, hands by the side gives a good balance to your body when dancing.
