I’m of a like mind with the folk here who remember this from years and years ago … I had it on an old yellow covered Archiv LP in about 1966, when still at school. It shows the early music lot haven’ really improved on the techniques that were available in about 1960, a lifetime ago …Zthis is truly one of the great recordings!

You are mistaken if you think these trumpets-- invented in the 1960s-- yield anything close to what Bach heard, At least valves are honest. Check out natural trumpets.

Welch große Zeit, in der in Italien, Frankreich, Spanien und auch Deutschland tausende Meister im Lande verteilt saßen und solch qualitätvolle Musik erdachten. Nach Beethoven war diese Zeit leider vorbei und man versuchte nur noch die Zuhörer mit Kunststückchen zu beeindrucken. Glenn Gould lag völlig richtig : "Nach Beethoven war die richtige Musik vorbei."

By which I suppose you mean the instructed ones! I disagree! I introduced this piece via an old LP c. 1969 to an old lady who was an uneducated traditional folksinger born about 1895 … apart from that she couldn’t tell a crotchet from a contrabass …she was entranced, and said that she could see Lords and ladies Processing down a great staircase … This is a fine performance and the “impossible” minor key episodes are well done indeed!
