I’ve long been fascinated with the Great Gatsby novel and apparently Fitzgerald based jay gatsby on Trimalchio or something - a character in Petronius’s ‘Satyricon’. Interesting 🤔

Trimalchio is actually mentioned in Gatsby. It says something like "his career as Trimalchio was over" in chapter seven. One of the original titles for Gatsby was 'Trimalchio in West Egg' I believe, as well. One of the reasons I read The Satyricon in the first place!

I first heard of petronius from watching Quo Vadis. The acting was pretty terrible but the actor playing Petronius was probably the least terrible.
