PetSmart Workers EXPOSE Horrendous Conditions

Corporate greed is killing pets and starving workers at PetSmart. When the private equity firm BC Partners bought PetSmart in 2015, animal deaths more than doubled and working conditions plummeted. Workers and elected officials are demanding change.
PetSmart’s behavior under BC Partners has caught the attention of Senator Warren and Rep. Mark Pocan, who are demanding answers about working conditions and pet deaths. Their bill, the Stop Wall Street Looting Act, would hold private equity firms responsible.

I’m an employee as well, I 100%. agree, I’m happy to find this video. I think more people should honestly see how difficult it can be behind the scenes for someone to work in retail when it comes to animals, people. PetSmart especially, has quite the reputation, so the chance of he getting filmed without your permission for something you have no idea about is quite high, or being called an animal abuser, etc. I wasn’t filmed, but I’ve been told to “off” myself for just working here. I think it should definitely be talked about more. I wish things would change for the animals, that’s all I want and I wish people would stop viewing the employees as monsters as well when we also can’t stand the mistreatment the animals receive.

Imagine how many fish die every day at PatSmart across the country - the animals they undervalue and abuse the most. Beta fish were never meant to live in tiny plastic cups or get thrown in the dumpster when they aren’t sold, but still living. And not to mention PetSmart sells tanks for fish that are too small and they’ve been doing it for so long that people think it’s normal to keep fish that way

Eventually this company will fail. They're already so desperate for workers they have to offer a $2,000 sign on bonus just to get people to apply. I've worked there for 2 years as a dog groomer and I hate it...4 different stores and I've seen a whole salon walk out. At one store our district leader forced us to work in 85 degree conditions when the ac broke because they didn't want to shut down because of money and the poor dogs were hyperventilating in the cages because of the heat. They didn't care. So my salon leader walked out. The dog groomers are what makes that company money and they treat all of us like shit. Over working us over booking us with dogs. They also use a shit cheap booking system that runs slow and shuts down all the time and the system also allows doodles to book 2 hours before you're scheduled to leave. All of this cutting into our groom time which is already limited. We're having to rush through each dog, while being a cashier, while being a receptionist, doing pointless videos, writing pawgress reports, and having to follow time consuming policies made up by some empty headed retard who has no clue about grooming at all. And really the dogs suffers because they don't know what's going on when you're rushing through them and stressed out. I can't sleep at night and I have ringing in my ears from all the stress. I'm looking for a new dog grooming job as we speak...in all 4 stores that I've worked at I've seen probably close to 45 groomers and bathers walk out of this job, not kidding. The dog groomers are what make this company the big money. And they're too stupid to realize that the more they treat us like crap the sooner down the road they won't have ANY ONE to run their business. Thank you so much for making this video. It's about time the customers are aware too...F*** you BC Partners you ruined Petsmart I hope you lose a shit ton of money down the road because you obviously have no clue how to own successful businesses.

And that'll never happen. The only way it'll stop is if either government regulations demand it or American labor once again organizes with so much strength that the workers themselves can demand it so. I'm not even sure it's an either/or personally. I think the regulations follow mass organized labor in a desperate attempt to preserve the system of capitalism, so either way you want to go I don't see us getting anywhere without directly democratic unions being a very major part of it

Yeah, maybe we don't buy animals from big box stores? We really shouldn't be buying animals at all. Check with your local shelters first and if you must purchase a living creature, such as fish and lizards, there are plenty of small pet store around most major cities that don't do this. Or, at least not to this extent. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but a pet is not like food or other basic necessities. We do have a choice in how we go about getting one.

Yes Indeed, we took on a senior dog that had been mistreated badly from the information we got , he was skin and bones, nervous for a bit until he realized he was going to be well taken care of, spoiled would be more appropriate and he's fantastic, sweet with a funny personality and is definitely not skinny any longer, I can't help but think these dogs understand and appreciate being saved, I would recommend a senior dog over and over.

There's still *some* amount of choice on everything else too, it's just being necessities your only choice is to choose lesser evils unlike luxuries and the pet trade. You can buy plant-based foods, but don't buy almond milk because it's very water intensive, try to buy as local as you can... Unless you can't afford to be picky either from a lack of money or time to cook or homelessness or what have you, then there really is no choice period.

Wow. I had no idea that going into this business with love for animals and ambition to help others care for their pets that I'd be working for such a phony company. I remember taking on this job when my full time job laid me off due to the pandemic shut down. I was on unemployment for a while until I applied. I knew I had to do something because unemployment is not a sustainable income and with my car payment and also just moving into a new place just a month before lock down I needed something to supplement. I was only working part time with my current job at the time and took a position with my local petsmart as a part time worker. Shortly after I started they buttered me up to the idea of working full time because it was hard to find workers who work apparently, and they offered me more that I was making with my other job. I weighed out the pros and cons and ended up giving my two weeks notice with a company I had been with over 4 years to go full time at petsmart. It didn't take long until I was approached with being an associate lead, but I am guessing it had more to due with the flexibility of working different hours and my call out rate was zero. I had no idea that I sold myself to a company like this. These videos made me cry just thinking about my own store and the deaths that may have been prevented. Though our take In process of the animals is several weeks to monitor their health and I know that if an animal absolutely needs vet care we are able to take them, but I've spoken out before of the conditions and confined spaces they are kept. It's not enough. Their lives matter too and to see folks stomp or crush or just perform surgeries without much care for them I find absolutely disturbing and question a persons mentality if you can just throw an animal away without much remorse or feelings. Absolutely inhumane and it makes me want to leave my job. I took this job thinking I was making a difference. I researched on my own because the training I received isn't anywhere near the proper care I have seen from the enthusiasts I follow, and people thank me for the information but anyone can get it themselves. What bothers me is the stigma that we don't care when I've had some folks out right not take my advice and then come back a few weeks later to tell me their animal had died, but I've also had folks come back with positive remarks about the information I gave them and how well their animal is doing. I encourage everyone to research a pet either before or if they choose to purchase one. Do the homework and find the right information because these animals deserve it. Idk where people get the idea that petsmart workers are a substitute for a veterinarian with the kind of questions that I get but I never give advice I am not sure on or something I believe a vet should be answering. The conditions of which these animals are breed are indeed appalling to say the least and they're should absolutely be certain guidelines laws rules and restrictions when selling animals. It should be done correctly and humanely. Proper living conditions and food accommodations and certainly partnered with a vet to examine these animals before shipping them. Furthermore I think petsmart could gain so much more if they cared about the information they are giving people to care for these animals. Not every animal is the same nor come from the same region of the planet so their diets are not all the same. Their living conditions are not all the same. Their care is different and I think if they partnered with these KZbin enthusiasts to offer better more extensive information the industry could be so much better and would create better awareness and offer proper care. You sell fish like they all should live together when not all the fish live in the same parameters. That's why fish die daily. Small animals like hamsters should not be housed together after 8 weeks to avoid aggression and deaths. They are for the most part solitary creatures and do not need to be housed together. They also need for a minimum of 450 square inches of floor space so the rocket ship or princess castle cages are not nearly enough space and can be dangerous for them. That kind of visual can be very deceiving to people who don't research on their own. Guinea pigs are social animals but they need an abundance of space and not a small glass enclosure with 4 or 5 together. Why on earth are they promoting selling animals for the sole purpose of entertainment to the human especially children. Children should NOT care for these animals whatsoever. They are irresponsible if left on their own. A women's child killed 3 birds in a couple of weeks and still wanted to either blame the store or the birds themselves when they left the store seemingly healthy. Children do not understand or have the concept of animals needs and requirements. They throw them or forget to feed them. They get bored with them, and what's worse is that the parent somehow thinks these animals are great for kids. These animals are extremely delicate and children just don't understand that if you squeeze too tight or drop something on them they can and probably will die because parents don't want the vet expenses. I feel so disgusted after watching these videos and from my own experiences with the company. Since I've started I've struggled to make ends meet and I am currently being threatened with a repo on my car because I've fallen behind on my payments. I was counting on my income taxes to help me catch up and I was told the company did not extract enough under the governments standards to which I owe the government something that I've never in my life have had to do. I feel like I've made such a big mistake taking a position there and i feel so snowed over as to how they project themselves to be vs how they actually operate. I would sign to have the laws and restrictions changed to improve the life or completely abolish the sale of these animals. It doesn't matter to me if it's small big common or uncommon. Every life is important. This treatment is unacceptable. BTW all I hear is "Sales Sales Sales" so nothing has changed and the care for the workers has not improved either.

@@emilycross5518 I decided it wasn’t for me. The people seemed very nice. And the main leader was very very understanding when I opened up about how my nerves were getting at me. I hadn’t realized I was going to also be answering phones and upselling packages and booking appointments. For some reason I thought I’d just be in the back doing my thing and bathing the dogs and such. I’m not a saleswoman type of person. I probably could have gotten used to it all. But on top of that, I was working another job and caring for my mother. Plus my own dog. Yada Yada. Just the workload of it all wasn’t physically possible. So I’d say it’d be good for someone who can get by with just part time work and not have a whole lot else going on. I was really excited about it but I hadn’t really thought it through how I was going to manage it all. I’d say go for it if you have the time and the people seem nice. This is absolutely HORRIBLE! The animal and employees health and safety should be their top priority! No animals should have their lives taken from sickness when they are so young. And no employee should have to see them suffer and die and have it feel like it's their fault or feel this sadness every day. I am going to a pet smart tomorrow because, sadly, it's the only local pet store near me. I am looking for a pair of Guinea pigs to join our family and I'm actually scared that they will die from sickness quickly or come from the store with health issues or bumble foot or some other problem. Also, most if not all of these pets, especially small mammals like ferrets, mice, hamsters, and probably Guinea a pigs too are from mills where they literally breed their animals to death even if the parents have a history of sickness or tumors etc. Just to save money and make more.

It is sad and sickening how these big chain pet stores operate and even smaller pet shops often don't have the best care or source their animals from the proper people. It's not just the fact that the animals are dying but the fact that a lot or most of their animals are sourced from breeding mills and backyard breeders. So when you get these animals they are poorly bred and usually sick. And people think by buying or adopting the animals is "saving" or "rescuing" them and it's not because all you are doing is keeping them in business and every animal you get they just put another in its place. So PLEASE do NOT get animals from these places or pet stores. The smaller pet stores, do your research on them and where they get their animals. Go to a reputable rescue or local ethical and responsible breeder.

I just started working at petsmart ya this place is a joke, out of all my co-workers only 1 of them actually cares about taking care of the animals in store properly the rest couldn't seem to care less. Also just to show how lightly petsmart cares about their animals we sold a women 200 dollars in fish one day the next day the poor women was in the store buying 60 dollars of fish to replace some of the fish that already died on her less than 24 hours after buying them, and me I'm not shocked they died either turns out my store only feeds the fish we carry in store once a week and the individual cupped ones ya they never get feed or cared for I come into the store and pull 10-20 dead fish off the shelf everyday. But best part is had to be my training so PetSmart usually has a weekly animal care schedule I was trained on animal care 1 day the next day I was expected to know wtf to do by my self without any guidance from a manager, but issue its the next day in the schedule the routine is now completely different from what it was yesterday so wtf am I suppose to do how should I know no one trained me apparently their a care guide sheet some were in the store no one seems to know were though. And lastly today I was yelled at for punching out 15 minutes late because I wanted to finish feeding the birds before I left I guess 15 minutes of extra pay isn't worth making sure the birds have food, guess I need just say sorry birds no food today petsmart cares more about saving money than making sure your alive.

Everything that they are saying is true, but I get paid 12.50 which is still not enough with how much work I do. One of the mangers are racist, unkind, and forceful. She wants me to sign people up for treats forcefully until the customers give in and give their first last name and email to sign up for the treats. I told her many times I don’t want to force people to do something they don’t want to do. Which they don’t care about, So when I don’t forcefully sign people up that don’t wanna get signed up they lower my hours to having 15 hours a week. Which that means I make about $130. The animals do die a lot they have a lot of dead animals that they freeze in the refrigerator and they keep them in their. Then petsmart gets more animals after they have died. The groomers are always low staffed and also on the floor as well. I wish Petsmart was better. Please be careful when you work at Petsmart I’m not saying all Petsmart‘s are the same but the The one I work at is not the greatest at all.

I wish I could say that people are exaggerating in this video but as someone associated with this company it’s all true it’s not anything for pets it’s anything for profit. I too have had month old Bearded dragons die in my hands and have witnessed too many fish go the way of the toilet bowl that I can count…

It’s the workers killing the animals. Their jobs are to take care of them. If you work there, there’s nothing stopping you from taking action and helping out. Unless you’re told otherwise.

@josefromnyc, spoken like someone that has never worked there. Do you understand how businesses work? There is plenty stopping the employees from helping the animals.... for starters you'll get fired for working off the clock, but if you stay late to help on the clock you could be faced with the exact same penalties. It is the responsibility of the corporations to make sure their decisions are helping to grow the company, not hinder it (Or the animal care in this instance.) I worked for PetSmart for 16 years, so i know how good they were able to do, but when it was purchased by this investment firm the entire operation became impossible, hence why i loved my time there, but would never go back. It's NOT the fault of the employees. Most of them care deeply, but it's not in their control.

PETSMART IS HORRIBLE!!! I took my dog to PetSmart many times. I went to a different location and they only trimmed a few of his nails and said he peed on the groomer while two other groomers tried holding him down to finish. Wtf!?! The bitch manager said I should have warned them and demanded I pay. I told her my dog has never, ever had that problem and has been to other PetSmart locations many times; check your records. She said, I know, but he was bad here. Obviously, it was their staff and/or the environment that was the problem. She would not give me my dog until I paid them to abuse my dog and not even complete the job I paid them to do. So, I had to pay PetSmart to literally scare the piss out of my dog, while three of them held him down, forced him to get his nails trimmed, and they did not even finish the job.

I can't speak for all Petsmarts that's for sure.....but the Petsmart I work at is nothing like this. This is appalling to me and doesn't make sense. My bosses and coworkers treat us with respect everyday and we are all like a family who care for the animals and whenever an animal is sick, we take them to the vet right away. All our animals go to homes we feel good about and we deny sales if they abet going to a good home. We take pride in our work and that's the Petsmart I know. No one can stop the pet trade, it will always be there so might as well be there for the animals while they are there :) and for our fellow coworkers

Agree, I also work at a PetSmart. However, things still need to change. I have caught ringworm before from the conditions that the animals come in. I have had animals die in front of me. It is awful. Improve conditions the animals come from, and increase pay. I expect more considering the amount of work they force on us (also considering our whole team’s knowledge on care and husbandry).

@@m1ntyleaves for sure the conditions of the places they come from should improve, I agree. I wish I knew more about those places they come from other than the internet's speculations. we have a lot of ringworm invested guinea pigs come in and terrified hamsters (especially the winter whites) I am hopeful though that the conditions will get better. at my place we just all do the best we can with what we have and I'm lucky to be at a Petsmart where we all care so much for the animals to the extent of even taking them home temporarily to nurse them back to health and go to exotic vets for these guys because they are so important to us. we're here for the animals and each other :)
