LOVE LOVE this video. It's painful to watch people repeatedly reach for and touch dogs that clearly do not want to be touched, but people just don't know how to tell. And because "consent" is such a huge buzzword in our own human social context, the timing is perfect. Yes, we should ask for consent from dogs, too!

Our newly adopted puppy gave us a few lip curls, growls, and a couple of snaps when we were petting him. He's very friendly and has not been abused otherwise. I think he was tired and maybe just wanted his space.
@Dogkind3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert- I think you're probably right that your pup wanted more space! Even very friendly dogs don't always want petting. You don't want him to make a habit of snapping at people, so it might be a good idea to always let him come to you for petting rather than going to him. I'd also recommend consulting with a good positive reinforcement trainer about this so that you can get on top of it before it becomes more of a problem. You can email us at admin@dogkindtraining.com if you'd like help finding a trainer!

Thankfully, I've found this before it escalated badly to biting. Just adopted a mongrel a few days ago, and he was trying to bit my brother because we've ignored the signals on this video. Thank you for this!

Love this video so much! Lately I've been seeing an increase in people rehoming or surrendering their dogs, some of which have been with them for years, because they bit while the owner was loving on them. I wish people would learn that dogs are not always into petting. I'm ashamed to say my 14 year old dog bit me when we were playing a kissing game. I was upset when it happened but now realize that she was probably signaling me to stop and I didn't pay attention. Thank you for this!

I send a link to this video to so many of my clients! I have a lot of clients with puppies, and many with both children and puppies, and this video helps *show* them a lot of the things I'm already talking about with them, and helps them to learn and understand. Having clear video examples of the body language is invaluable! Thank you.

Terrific job on this video! I am going to share it with the SPCA volunteers here locally. The only additional suggestion I would make it to discourage people from reaching over the dog's head for the initial pet. We encourage a chest scratch as the first physical contact. Many dogs (including my own shepherds) don't like strangers reaching over them.

Excellent video! This was clear and concise and the examples were very instructive. I now understand how our dog indicates that petting is okay (or not) when we are on a walk and meet neighbors and other walkers.
@leix72 жыл бұрын
This is really helpful! I wasn't sure at first, but people kept telling me it didn't matter and said it was okay to pet the dog, or think I'm silly for trying to notice if the dog is comfortable or not. I am glad that I saw this, I recognize some of the signs from both yes and no answers and I'm definitely going to be paying attention to the signals given by a dog before assuming they'd like to be pet.

Oh I'm so glad! Most people aren't very good at reading dog body language, and don't realize their dog is uncomfortable.

ears back can also be a sign of trust, ears back is not a fair sign
@Dogkind Жыл бұрын
Hi Sara- Some dogs do pin their ears back when greeting someone they love, that's true! It's a more helpful clue to how the dog is feeling when taken together with other aspects of body language like a tightly closed mouth and tense body.

Exactly! "No Means No" applies to critters of every kind. We, as humans, need to learn what dogs' body language is saying, since their verbal skills are distinctly limited.

One of the dogs in my home (pomeranian) will sit and whine for something and if you go to pet her, she starts standing on her hind legs and pushes your hand away. It doesn't seem to be an "I am nervous" no as much as a "cut it out and listen to me, I want something" answer.
@trackhorse90285 жыл бұрын
I recently visited a neighbor with three Golden Retrievers. In her kitchen, I was "attacked" by all three as they vied for my petting attention. No question there! Our answer to "can I pet *your* dog?"-NO!

Hello, I’m commenting to ask about something very important and I hope you see this. I’m assuming your unaware, but there’s a community of bestiality defenders (zoophiles) which are utilizing this video as proof that animals can consent to sex. This is, as you’d imagine, very dangerous rhetoric. Since this is a professional channel, I’d love to see you guys reply to this, just to confirm you don’t stand by these horrific people. That on its own may prevent them from utilizing this video to excuse animal sexual abuse in the future. Thank you for your time

Hi Troy- that's odd and gross. I've never heard of that, but of course that's completely unethical.

Arrggh 😬😳... Sorry but contrary to all you guys (it seems), I find this video soooo cringe!!! 🤦♀️😖 Technically yes, it's (painfully) OBVIOUSLY correct... But making a (long) video to teach that is like watching a cooking class to learn the recipe for boiled egg.. if you know what I mean.. Unfortunately, and to my utter shock, it's there are adults that still seem oblivious to that... A couple years ago I lost my oldest dog. She was a really strong and protective Irish staffy and didn't like at all being touched by strangers. But every once in a while some random would continue to insist even tho she was already growling and barking! I always put down to alcohol or smthg like that... I mean, where I come from this is the kind of stuff we teach 4yo kids, not make a video for adults about! It looks so weird. Also the term they adopted "asking the dog 4 consent" is super cringe. It gives to what we'd normally call "animal communication" "how to read your dog", etc.. an almost "political feeling about it, it sounds like virtue signalling, SJW type of thing.. Just an opinion.. The info is absolutely correct but which kind of completely disconnected person is its demographics??..
@Dogkind3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment Radja! As you noted, even if you think this sort of thing is obvious, not everyone knows not to reach out and touch unfamiliar dogs. Many, many people find the video helpful. If this stuff is too basic for you, you aren't the target audience, and that's ok.
