There was a book out years ago that covered a few drivers over the course of the 1996 season. Kyle Petty was one of the drivers followed in the book and they go exactly over this incident. What NASCAR had a beef with was a radio communication in regards to who was where in the field, with Kyle responding he’d “take care of the situation”. NASCAR must have translated that as “I’m gonna punt him” however, which led to what we seen. Also consider, the Earnhardt-Hamilton example, it didn’t result in at least half a dozen torn up race cars on a restart. Petty punting Musgrave ruined a bunch of nights, so I also get where NASCAR was coming from on that one.

Rockingham 1995, though somewhat in NASCAR’s defense, they though Earnhardt’s crew missed a lug nut in a pit stop. What had happened was a lug did fall off during the stop, but the tire changer was able to put on another lug and get it on. The problem was the initial lug was painted bright orange, and the spare lug was not painted such, so an official initially thought they forgot a lug. When he was brought in and it was discovered that there was a lug on the car, they threw a caution and gave him his lap back. Though if that happened to Lake Speed or Hut Stricklin, I agree that I doubt the same courtesy would be given to them.

Dale Earnhardt: 7 x Winston Cup Champion, 76 career victories (including a Daytona 500 win), and inducted in the inaugural class of the Nascar Hall of Fame. Jeremy Mayfield: 5 career victories.... **cricket chirps** ugh....oh...

Was an avid fan for years. Now I don’t even check race results. I just follow dirt track now.

@Ross Outdoors and nobody worries about how pretty they are, or how great they are in front of a camera.

15 teams should've showed up at the track in identical black cars

If a team pulled something like this today they'd probably get sued by their sponsor for "breach of contract" because they put their logos on a paint scheme that wasn't approved by the corporate overlords who like to take all the fun out of racing these days.

In case anyone wasn’t sure why so many fans could hate Earnhardt in the 90’s (myself included), this is exactly why. Dale was given an entirely different set of driving standards than the rest of the field, and NASCAR treated him with kid gloves. Still pisses me off today.

He was the Michael Jordan of NASCAR. Working with a different set of more lenient rules than everyone else.

OH, I HAD TO CLICK ON THIS! Now it makes sense! I knew it!!! I kept telling my dad (big 3 fan) at the time, Kyle or Felix had did that on purpose.

It's really funny because I was named after Kyle Petty, and my dad's favorite driver was Earnhardt.

@Jeff Kopis I was born the year Kyle was a title contender.

I always liked KP. His driving career was very mediocre, but he always kept it real and still isn't afraid to call out BS in NASCAR,

Nascar pretty much sucks now with restrictorplate and segment crap racing, just anything they could screw it up with.
