Like I can't even imagine the terror of: having a narc mom and dad, no friends, sleeping on the floor, being sent into an abusive wilderness therapy program (for NO REASON! HIS 'BAD BEHAVIOUR' IS BECAUSE OF HIS PARENTS!!!), no privacy....Jesus. Those kids will need SO much therapy. Big mood. There are a lot of sad abuse cases where it’s impossible for the kid to get out because they get 0 financial aid because “the parents have money”. Like that’s not EXACTLY what the parents say if those kids ask for anything. “Why you want MY money”. I have a friend who is basically waiting to hit the right age to go back to school because it’s too expensive while her parents are still required to be in her FAFSA, even though they said they will never contribute a dime.

This is also why their oldest couldn't attend any other school besides BYU (which was really her parents' first choice). They refused to help her finance her education, which one of the schools she got accepted into was Boston University. And then when she left home for college, her mom stole all of the money from her savings account.

yeah.... some parents dont realize how harmful it is to threaten to destroy the material posessions of a kid, especially stuffed animals and plushies i had a blue cat plush my dad bought me, i took it with me when i went to a hospital. When the nurses told me to take a liquid sedatives and i refused he just threatened to toss both my plushie and my phone out the window, and he got more and more aggravated the more i cried ... a few months ago as i was cleaning my room to make the space to install a new bed i finally donated that plushie because honestly since that day it only became a sour reminder of a somewhat traumatizing memory ... thats too bad, it was cute, but it was better for my mental health to get rid of it

I'm literally an adult and still sleep with my stuffed animals and bring one with me when i go out. It's an autism/healing my inner child thing due to being abused when i was a kid. Who needs slaves when you have children, after all you're already obligated to feed and clothe them. But sarcasm aside, it would be very hard enforcing child labor laws, it would be easier to 1) educate the parents that a good chunk of their audience are probably s3xually attracted to their children and are using and sharing their photos with similarly sick individuals 2) by posting your day it becomes very easy to actually find your location so you are putting those children in jeopardy not only from sickos but scary messed up fans and haters. And 3) the platform could request a dedicated bankaccount for the children that the parents can't touch and transfer the revenue from all the videos with children in them to that account that only the child will be able to access once grown. And out of all the ideas I think number 3 would be the most effective, unfortunately, because some parents are well aware of 1 and 2 and still continue exploiting their children.

Nobody is unrepairably damaged, what actually matters is the motivation and conviction somebody has to repair and heal. She doesn't have any motivation and conviction to repair because she didn't think that what she was doing was wrong, which brings up questions about desensitisation and indoctrination to me personally speaking. Terminology like that is frequently used against people with severe mental illnesses, so please excuse me if I have an issue with it. I relate to the oldest son. There's a breaking point when you have strict parents, when they take away all privileges for so long, you are no longer motivated to "be good" because they have nothing left to take away which is weirdly liberating. You can finally say or do whatever you want because they ran out of consequences. He didnt need to be sent away. He needed reasonable privileges/punishments. They have stunted his maturity and I hope he finds mentors to help him navigate adulthood rather than people who want to use him.

There's a real parallel between escalating abuse and purposeful isolation of children from anyone who could provide support, kinship or intervention. Removing them from schools, social circles, even doctors and dentist registries, etc. There's a lot of good people homeschooling their kids, but there are also many who use it as a means to hide further abuse and neglect from prying eyes.

I think she said she liked the extra time with them or whatever, but it seems weird af to pull your kid out of school for a single year and then put them back in. ​@serephita , it is child abuse. My parents had CPS called on them due to me suddenly losing weight super fast and due to having MRSA at 16, they charged my parents with neglect. I know I was under 100 pounds but local Doctors in my small ass town (as of 2021/2022 we finally are over 3,000 again) they swept it under the rug and stated I just had a UTI. My specialist couldn't get me in for 3 months...my parents did everything in their power to get me in ASAP, yet CPS saw them as guilty over this. Even my specialist said once I was able to see her, that there was no way we could have prevented it unless we had x-ray vision. Let's just say, the social worker I had wasn't listening to me whatsoever either. 🙃 anyways other than the medical neglect charges, they also got charged with 'not feeding me properly' due to my weight/age. P.S. I'also in a wheelchair, have been since I was 5 1/2 and I'm now almost 31 yrs old. Family vloggers who are exploiting their children for money, need to be charged...not parents who actually give a shit about their child/children. also , California is working on getting a law passed when it comes to these things so HOPEFULLY, Cali actually gets it passed and ends up having the federal government make a law or have more states follow Cali's lead on this.

I dunno. I was sent to bed without dinner as punishment as a kid, and it definitely didn’t (and still doesn’t) feel like child abuse to me. But then that feels different than expecting a kid who did nothing wrong except forget their lunch to go through a school day without food, where they’re needing food to pay attention and learn and play. Wheras throwing dog crap at your baby sister and being sent to bed without dinner feels far more reasonable; all you’re doing is laying in bed, and if you’re hungry, maybe that’ll teach you a lesson about not throwing biohazards at a toddler.

I know a few people who were not fed as a punishment and down the line developed an ED. I was told as a child to not over eat on certain foods because 'cute boys' wouldn't like me if I was overweight. To this day, I still struggle with that. I have gotten stomach ulcers/had a stomach ulcer tear in the last 2 years over malnutrition. IF you were to look up the law on what parents/guardians are LEGALLY supposed to provide children in their homes, access to food is one of those things. I was never forced to eat anything I didn't like. I had to try one bite & if I still didn't like it, I didn't have to eat it. different generations were taught different, yes, but refusing to bring your 6 year old CHILD their lunch that they forgot at home or arranging to make sure they still ate something at school is neglect. I was on reduced breakfast/lunch and if I forgot to bring in a check to put money under my name, the cafeteria ladies/staff still made sure I got food. so what if this child decided to throw biohazards at their baby sister every single day? Is that still a good punishment then? Wouldn't it be a better idea to sit the child down and get on their level to ask them if they know why it's not okay to throw dog poop at their baby sister? if they say no, explain to them why it's not okay. if they say yes, have them explain it to you in their own words. I would then also ask the child if they'd like something gross and smelly like dog poo thrown at them. You then respond to what they say. don't raise your voice, be calm and once you feel the child finally does understand why it was wrong or even why they did it, have them go up to their baby sister, have them apologize and then give her a hug. this is how I see it; would you refuse to feed yourself as an adult if you threw dog crap at a sibling who's also an adult or refuse to let your sibling have food because they threw dog crap at you? idk I just feel like refusing to give a child food they need so they can, you know, *grow* is 10000% child abuse. Do you think it's okay to smack a child as punishment then too? There are adults who developed PTSD over being hit with a wooden paddle by their parents or parents' friends who were babysitting. No one should ever put their hands on a child, especially hard enough to where they have a hand/paddle print on their skin or end up black and blue from it.

As a mental health professional with over 30 years of experience working with children, this video was extremely upsetting for me to watch. I’ve never heard of this channel or this program, but I was horrified by the emotional, psychological & probably physical abuse..imo…these children were subjected to on a daily. I knew as soon as Ruby said her 6 y.o needed to face the “natural consequences” of hunger for not packing her own lunch that this family was religious. I remember when the natural consequences movement in parenting started about 20 yrs ago, because my son’s soccer coach’s wife was pushing it with their Christianity. Basically you don’t stop your child from touching a hot burner because burning their hand is the natural consequence. It’s ridiculous! Then when the wilderness camp was mentioned, I knew they were an extreme LDS family. Many of those camps have severely damaged young people emotionally, psychologically & physically & states are finally investigating them. I would guess that Kevin is a bishop in the church, which provides a level of protection for the abuse of the children. I was also abused as a teenager by someone like ruby, they are monsters that often go unnoticed because they "don't leave bruises" (oh, wait, until one day they do). those psychopats make sure nobody believe the children for as long as posible, and they manage to convince people that they are just acting up, or even they are being punished when they don't do anything wrong. There is a point in which you are afraid to breath too loud, because you might get punished. Any word that comes out of your mouth could put you in trouble, you live in constant fear. After a while people get used to being incarcerated and it starts to feel like their new normal, and suddenly going back doesn’t feel like such a deterrent to committing further crime, because you’re going back to somewhere you’re at least used to and familiar with. Wheras the first short amount of time in jail is an absolute shock to the system; it’s unfamiliar, it’s strange, it’s scary and you feel out of place and alone. There’s an argument to be made that for a lot of non-violent first-time offenders, a shorter sentence might therefor be more effective as a preventative measure / deterrent to committing further crime than a medium-length or longer sentence. Bonus points: it’s better for any (especially dependent) family members of the offender, and cheaper to the tax payer.

My parents did a lot of stuff very similar to this family, but didn't publicize it often, because they knew how wrong it was. There was one time where they took me to a gas station and tried to make me pump gas before ever teaching me, got me into a crying panic attack, then showed the video around to friends and family. The amount of shame I felt was absolutely immeasurable. I think the only thing that could have made my childhood worse is if they had done it all on camera and posted it. I feel so awful for these kids.

As a kid who had these parents, who had my bed taken away, my things burned, my pictures taken off the walls for forgetting (finished) homework assignments or cleaning incorrectly or saying anything other than “yes dad”, I did NOT turn out well. Not only am I terrified of making mistakes, I fear my parents themselves. I haven’t spoken to my dad in 6 years (I’m almost 27) and he’s still confused why I’m so “hurt”. But this sort of abuse is insidious because as the kid, you genuinely don’t understand why everyone around you is allowed to make mistakes and you can’t. Through therapy I’ve finally realized that my dad viewed my productivity as my worth. I’ve spent this time trying to uncouple from it, but how you’re raised sticks with you. Thank you for this particular vid because it’s so validating to hear someone say “this is not okay”.

Rewatching this doc and shaking my head at how much foreshadowing popped up here. I've got three kids, pretty much all adults, and I can't imagine being so incredibly hateful to them. She touts her parenting skills like she's doing something to build her children up, but even if she wasn't going to jail, all her behavior is so traumatizing that she would be lucky if her kids ever spoke to her again. Glad the kids are out from under her thumb (and honestly, they probably don't need to be with their father either), it's just too bad it took so long. The damage has been done...hopefully with good therapy and real support they will be able to move past it and be better humans than their mother ever could be.

Ruby seems to get a thrill out of her children's distress. 31:50, you can see that when her kids don't react to her taking away their devices for the summer, she is stunned and goes, "No, I'm not done!" There are clips now floating around in which she laments the fact that her children, in her own words, did not suffer enough with a punishment that she dreamed up, so she'll need to think of something worse next time. I feel like what's happening now was an inevitable escalation of abuse. This case is soooo mind boggling. They used every possible action to destruct their kids wellbeing. I was brought up in an abusive family, alcoholism was rampant and still at the age of 43 I'm working on my mental health struggles due to my parents being unsafe and unstable. The more I know about this 8 passengers catastrophy, I'm glad to say I got it somewhat easy.

Parentificaion of children, having your children working while exploiting their privacy is absolutely horrific. I just saw a story pop up about daughter Ruby breaking away and speaking up of how being raised this way has affected her. Thanks for sharing what a family channel should NOT look like Swoop

My oldest son is about his age (17) and I just could never imagine treating him like that. It makes me so sad for Chad. (And all the kids)

I don't know HOW she doesn't see how twitchy and weirdly he's behaving, like he's about to snap at any moment. The way he talks etc. This is clearly not a quirk but a result of continuous trauma

I hadn’t heard of this family until today. All of the videos I’ve seen completely point to abuse or neglect. I’m not sure if it’s because I had an abusive father or what, but I think it’s obvious. I think the kids need to heal first. When they are ready AND WANT to talk, then they can revisit.

When I was little and my mom had so little money there were times when she couldn't send us to school because we didn't have food for lunch, she would do ANYTHING to make sure we're not hungry. As I said, there were times when me and my sister wouldn't go to school which didn't provide meals and she couldn't afford to get us lunch. So she made us literally stay at home to at least make us some french fries so we would just EAT. When I forgot my lunch, she would drag my father's ass to his car to bring me the lunch because "there's no way our child is going to be hungry because she forgot to pack it, she's fucking 7"

Exactly. I remember being a teenager who would volunteer at a nursing home through my church to give the ladies whole manicures. I loved it 🥰. These women had the most amazing stories to tell AND they felt glamorous when we were done❤. However, there was one lady who NEVER smiled, only spoke to give commands, and would grumble a “thank you” at the end of the session. I came to find out that her family NEVER came to visit her, not even her grandkids. At the time, it broke my little heart, but seeing how some of these humans move over the last 20 years of my life, I know now there could be more to the story.

oh hell yeah. My grandfather is at that stage now and the whole family is like weeeeell sucks to suck I guess! We get judgy calls sometimes from staff about not visiting him despite the fact we've told them about the fact he abused (as in, SA'd) one of his kids and me (grandchild), hit the other kids and his wife throughout their marriage, and was just a garbage dude. So hey, you get what you get.

As a victim of Wilderness Therapy in the forests of North Carolina. The abuse you face is horrific you are told everything you’re feeling is “only for attention” You shower 1 time a month. My group consisted of a girl as young as 9 fucking years old to 14. I was 13 and am 17 now. I was there for just over 3 months before getting sent to a residential treatment center in Utah called Vista Sage which has been shut down for abuse and neglect. Everything that boy went through is horrific I can’t even imagine how he must of felt finally getting out just to be again placed into the spotlight of the camera. Swoop you should do a deep dive on Wilderness therapy. They are legalized abuse centers and more people and parents need to be informed of the damage these cause to your children.

This old lady is broken hearted to read this even though I know that many of these places are taking parents $ to damage their children. I hope you never again in your life are treated this way. Sounds like it aged your soul a little bit, use that to help those with less life experience.

Could also be religious privilege. They live in a heavily LDS area, are members of the LDS church (we see a link to the church's website on their profile page at one point), and their discipline is religious based ("natural consequences" was a church teaching I heard growing up). Odds are, CPS officials in the area are predominately LDS members and would hold the same or similar values. Hence, there's no abuse according to what they're seeing, just good parenting techniques, regardless what the rest of us see.
