I seen a clip of Ruby saying her youngest daughter was obeying all the rules and was eager to please them. she then decided that was manipulative because her daughter was just doing the right things in order not to get in trouble not because she wanted to do the right things and she punished her for being a manipulator. THAT is terrifying

Such a great point! Especially as I've always noticed MSM is usually months behind the True crime community. There have been so many times my mom will tell me about hearing info from the news that I had told her about 3 months prior. And some will acknowledge true crime KZbinrs but many do not and don't even mention the actual sleuthing the internet does on these cases. So it's seriously refreshing that they are acknowledging and giving them a larger platform to share info

The money. And the expectation of her ‘religion’ is that she have as many children as possible. Be thin. Be blond. I am not excusing her and IMO her husband’s horrible behavior. Hey swoop. I'm a 2013 diamond ranch academy student. They were all over the news in 2022 for the passing of Taylor Goodridges. But in 2013 a boy passed away, we suffered massive abuse and our suits are hitting dead ends. For years police in the area ignored police reports filed by the children escaping that school. Because of this being ignored and our voices being silented alot of us fell out of the statute of limitations. I can get you in touch with other survivors and the group unsilenced. Please help by covering the nightmare of diamond ranch academy, and spread light on the troubled teen industry in Utah! Literally 20 minutes from saint George. This is a topic rich with material for a Swoop doc. This program, The Diamond Ranch Academy, and others like it, have profited from the pain of families struggling with their teenage children while simultaneously causing emotional and sometimes physical harm on those children. Kids have suffered and even died in these exploitive and abusive programs which exploded in popularity in the 80’s and some continue to this day. Often promoted with inflated claims of experience and qualifications, many of these programs are owned or operated by shady operators who are clearly interested in making money, and to that end sometimes extend the duration of the ‘patient’s’ stay to increase the bill, and other shady practices.

Knowing how Jodi abused her nibbling, I fully believe that was part of their "punishment". That the wounds from being tied down was their fault. If they weren't so impure, then she wouldn't have to tie them down to save them from the devil. The pain that comes with putting cayenne pepper in their wounds is a reminder of their sin, and reminder of how impure they are. That they deserve punishment. That seems to be her pathology in abusing these kids. It's not just horrific physical abuse, it's the mental, and spiritual abuse that makes these kids genuinely believe they deserve to be in pain. They don't need to heal physically, they need to heal their soul then they won't be in pain anymore. It'd make my spine shiver if it didn't make me so damn pissed off.

These behaviours were weaponised by Jodi and used to gaslight him and his ex-wife into believing he was a dangerous sexual deviant, and a danger to his family. I encourage ppl to seek out interviews with Adam to get more info on the horrible abuse he experienced through Jodi and Connexions. Teachers like that should get an award, I think it’s so irresponsible to just expect your kid to look after themselves because the parents obviously don’t want to take care of them. I mean most adults sometimes don’t take proper care of themselves so just expecting your 6 YEAR OLD KID to do it is crazy to me. Also ruby is basically complaining to her followers that it annoys her that she has to even hear the teacher’s concerns about her child being hungry, that is essentially what she’s doing, you don’t pull out a phone and press record if you didn’t feel wronged and had the urge to vent. I firmly believe that she would not have worded it as being ‘uncomfortable’ for the teacher if she truly cared, and like tf ‘I should bring her food to ease her discomfort ?!?!?’ I think it’s cruel to expect your kid to get used to the feeling of hunger when the parents obviously have to resources to feed the child and instead is upset when they don’t do all the stuff taking good care of a child would entail.

What bothers me the most about Rubys sisters videos/ statement is the fact that they claim not to know about the abuse taking place as if Ruby wasn’t blasting it on the internet to be seen by millions. How is it that the public could see the abuse her own sisters couldn’t?? They wanted to “protect the kids” but allowed them to be abused publicly for YEARS. If they were actually protecting the kids they would have stepped in more than 3 years ago.

@@AAAforshortthis is what I think as well. They may not have agreed with their choices parenting but it was within the realm of “normal” for their circles. And honestly, I don’t think it escalated to a point where they would have stepped in until Ruby cut them out. And at that point they didn’t have anything to go on until Shari stepped away from the family and reconnected with the sisters. And even then, we don’t know what she told them, or if she asked them to not interfere because she was actively trying to help the kids… we won’t know until it’s made public. That said, I do worry about the way the sisters are handling it. Bonnie in particular, she has had her own issues throughout the years as well. As an ex-Mormon myself, I think I can provide insight into why her sisters are reacting the way they are. In my experience, a lot of Mormon families try their utmost best to appear as perfect as possible on the outside, while everything is falling apart at home. Because if you look like you’re struggling, or you look like you’re failing, that is a reflection on how “strong” your faith is. “Well, these bad things are happening because you don’t read your Book of Mormon enough. You don’t pray enough. You don’t go to church enough. You are not righteous enough.” There is such a big isolation culture within Mormonism. Not to say that everyone is like this, but there is a massive air of judgement around failure in that church. Even if you are not directly responsible for the bad things, it tarnishes the way people see you. If you are struggling, that is YOUR fault. You are letting Satan in, because you are having that human emotion that is anger, or sadness. And there is a big degree of fear involved too. Fear that because of your sister’s horrible actions, you won’t get to be with her in the afterlife. Fear that because of her, her children will fall away, and they will be lost in the afterlife too. And knowing that if you speak up, especially in a church setting, chances are you will be shut down. Mormon women are (generally) taught to be submissive, and *quiet*. Loud laughter is frowned upon. It’s unbecoming. You do not speak up if something is wrong. Because you do not have authority, especially over a man, and in this case, Kevin is also to blame here as well. My mom was abused as a child by her stepfather, and when she told the church, they silenced her because he was a leader in the church, and he faced no repercussions. The church does not stand up for abuse victims. The church enables the abusers. It’s a systemic mess, and the generational damage that I have experienced and seen SO MANY OTHERS experiencing is not going away anytime soon. So sorry for this whole situation, the whole thing is heartbreaking. I hope these kids see justice, and that they will be safe. Edit: I want it to be clear that I have met many good people who are Mormons. This is not a criticism of those people, but for the organization who enables the people who take advantage of the rules to do things like this. It’s a broken system, one that teaches and enforces harmful rhetoric.

Yeaa.. I know a lot of people are saying things like "narcissism runs in the family". However, from a Mormon perspective, public perception is incredibly important. I've known a lot of Mormon families, and ex mormons. Unfortunately there is this idea that anything reflecting negatively on you, reflects badly on the church. Keeping a squeaky clean, "wholesome" public image is more important than anything else. Including harm towards children. When children are abused, it's supposed to be handled behind closed doors where no one can see what's happening. I know several people in Mormonism who were abused, and told to stay quiet as to not embarrass their families.. that God will heal all, and there's no reason to speak with anyone else about what happened. It's despicable.

Again, that's alleged, but if that turns out to be true, I will be 0% surprised and I think that it tells you all you need to know about how Ruby saw her children.

in Jessi's interview they also explained how Jodi would accuse them (they were 16 at the time) for being addicted to sex and masturbation and that was her justification of the abuse (they said they didn't even know what masturbation was at that time). Jessi said that they weren't surprised by Rubi blaming her son of sexual deviancy because Jodi would do the same to them, they said that even the language used had Jodi written all over it. it seems that Jodi's influence over Ruby went as far as to manipulate her into believing that her own children were in distortion and that they needed abusive punishment in order to be treated. fucking shameful.

I'm reminded of how the leader of the 12 Tribes started regularly accusing the children in the cult of all manner of wild and deviant sex acts (e.g., bestiality), and would order children as young as five to get married if he so much as caught them *holding hands,* because he considered that a sex act. I'm also reminded of how many virulent transphobes who accused trans people of all manner of sexual violence and deviancy have themselves ultimately been revealed to be pedophiles or rapists. Every projection is a confession with these types.

Ruby is angry her son escaped and lead to her arrest. She's punishing him from jail with those allegations she made against him. She's showing she's still in control and reinforcing the shame she's taught him to feel. She ensured that he would be alone through this, separated from his sister and treated like a suspect. Abusors do some crazy shit to keep a stranglehold on their victims. Sadly, this is normal every day life to these kids... having been raised and dehumanized by their own mother during their developing years. This will be a lifelong struggle for them to unlearn and heal from. I wish I could help them shoulder some of the burden in some way. 💔 Edit: she claims he's had a porn addiction since he was 3 years old... 3! But yet she runs her house like a drill sergeant and controls everything they do, every device they interact with, everyone they see, where they go, when they do anything... I don't see how it's possible he got into it at such a young age. If he did, I don't see how a 3 year old would like it and want to see more, and then- he kept getting it somehow? She brags about how she ran a super tight ship with her kids. _If_ her son saw porn at 3 years old I'm betting that was due to her own irresponsibility. But I'm betting it didn't happen and she's fabricating/gross exaggerations to shame her own kids. It's how she controls them.

One of the things that breaks my heart about cases like this is just how many people have faith in CPS. In an ideal world, they'd step in immediately when a child is in danger and take them to a safer home, but in real life, there are so many people I know, myself included, that have had experiences with protective services where they end up siding with the abuser. You basically have to have bite marks with matching dental records for them to believe victims. I really hope Ruby goes to jail and stays there and I hope that with all those calls attention is drawn to how little CPS is willing to do. In my experience, healing from abuse isn't easy but I hope the Franke kids grow to carry it well and hopefully one day they can move forward.
@kaemincha
@kaemincha 11 ай бұрын
I'm so sorry that happened to you. It is frustrating on the other side of CPS as well and is a big reason why so many socia workers burn out of the field fast. There is so much liability and without physical evidence, the state is scared to do anything that might end up with them in legal action. It's an imperfect system and I hope we can work towards bettering it because there are so many children whose cries for help get missed.

As a post mormon from Utah, I was obsessed with this story for a few days when it first came out. You did this story Justice here, Swoop! I am glad you mentioned Adam Paul Steed and the dynamic and pattern that Jodi Hildebrandt perpetrates. His story and Jessi's will hopefully help these Franke kids receive justice. Unfortunately, John Dehlin at Mormon Stories Podcast received a court order to take down the POWERFUL 5 hour Adam Paul Steed interview. Adam has nothing to do with the current case and should be allowed to share his story. Very odd. I am concerned for the 2 youngest kids, particularly. I feel Ruby was the most abusive / sadistic with them. I hope Chad is ok. I hope Russell is with a kind, safe, comforting foster family.

@gacktist00 probably because it showed her in a bad light as both someone who participated in destroying Adam's life and (according to Adam) a piss poor mother. Much like how Ruby and Jodi would dip and go gallavanting about for days on end and leave the kids to fend for themselves, Adam's ex, despite having him have barely any parental rights, and making all the disgusting allegations against him, she'd dip and leave the kids with him 80% of the time. Everything Adam went through and all the while he did everything he could to be there for his kids really highlights how crappy Kevin's excuses are. I'm glad I got the chance to listen to the entire interview before it got taken down. Hopefully we get to see it again because it IS powerful. I personally suspect that the LDS has something to do with that takedown. Adam not only exposed Jodi, but also the LDS leadership's continously supporting her. I suspect the takedown had something to do with them... they DO have some deep pockets.

As someone who left the Mormon church a little over 2 years ago, I appreciate the care with which you discussed that portion of this video, Swoop. Thank you. I personally know the harm that many suffer at the hands of the teachings and sayings of the church and in some cases, take to an awful and disgusting extreme. But I also know there are many good people who are still believers. Deconstructing is very difficult and although absolutely necessary, it can be hard to hear criticisms of a church you once held so closely to and were influenced by. So thank you, thank you, thank you as always - for validating those complicated feelings and discussing that issue in this case in such an articulate and delicate way. Much love!

I've been good friends with a girl and her family since HS, so at least 25-28 years. They are Mormons & very involved in their church, they are such good people. They aren't extreme in any way & I've never personally heard of anyone within her vicinity that was. Admittedly it took a few years for me to win over her parents, but I accomplished that before we even graduated. There was a heartbreaking time for me when she got married bc she got married in the temple & I couldn't go. She never knew how much it hurt though because her brother warned me ahead of time. 😂 I was thankful for that bc I didn't want her to feel bad, I knew she had always dreamed of getting married in the temple & the obvious being it wasn't my dang wedding.😂 I try to let people know that the ones usually in the news are on the extreme side, that is just a small fraction & there is a reason they are classified as extreme.

He was referred to Jodi due to the trauma of Boy Scouts case where a ton of child SA was uncovered, as well as mormon leaders allowing it to happen by silencing victims. His wife had some unrelated issues. However Jodi accused of him S addiction, and sent him to addiction services for literally no reason other than everyone is an addict in Jodis mind. So he went to therapy for a completely different reason than what he was "treated" for. When he brought up his childhood trauma during treatment, she would tell him that's part of his addiction. That he's addicted to being a victim, and addicted to "impure thoughts". That he may even harm his own children like what happened to him as a child, if he hasn't already. He's an addict, it's always on his mind, so it's only a matter of time before he hurts them. Those are the things Jodi was saying to his then wife aswell. Like seriously demented things to say to a survivor of SA, what Jodi did to him is beyond disgusting. All that was before they used the legal system, and mormon church leaders to ruin his life further. She's done this to many others.. with help from mormon leaders, but many of her victims are still too ashamed to speak out fully. They want to put this all behind them.. honestly can't blame them.

Unaddressed appropriately this C-on-C CSA predation can lead to the future-adults continuing to be S-predatory as adults. Children are hurt by these behaviours at the hands of other children and are less likely to report it to the adults in their lives when they do start to appreciate that they've been CSA'ed. Ruby's gone about addressing these alleged actions in a totally harmful manner to not only the child repeating what was done to them but every child ever. Ruby should have gone to the police and proper specialist counseling as soon as she was aware of what she alleges was happening. She's betrayed children and parents everywhere by addressing her child's alleged actions in the fashion she chose

The opener where swoop describes the experience of the man who found the child gave me goosebumps , anxiety, and existential dread. Those poor children.

As somebody who was raised, and is now trapped in the Mormon religion, most of what Jodi is teaching is not shocking. I have been shamed for the past 3 years because my dad and my mother were divorced. Unfortunately what Jodi is showing others is normal for Utah.

@@unfortunatedisgrace246Getting out is not easy.. it means falling out with the church. The social repercussions of which strip many people from their families, friends, and support groups. It can get you removed from your job, taken out of school, especially if you're publicly shamed by the church. It can foster scrutiny towards your loved ones, and ruin opportunities for them. If you have kids, and try to leave the church, but your spouse refuses to leave the church.. it is horrifyingly common that church leaders will fund the parent still in the church during divorce proceedings in order to insure you can't have custody of your children. Cut off from everything, everyone you've ever known. A lot of people who grew up in, and are stuck in Mormonism don't ever leave.. even if they lose faith in the religion. The consequences, and isolation is just too severe. There's a lot of people who do leave now days.. but still many don't feel like they ever could do that. Even with help, what they lose is so devastating. A lot of people leave, and end up coming back to repent.. just so they can speak to their loved ones again.

tell them they’re sinners for judging you about something your parents did, see how they react. anytime someone tells me i’m doing something that’s considered a sin, i say “you’re sinning by judging me”. i’m not religious so being told i’m sinning doesn’t affect me, but it sure is hilarious to see their faces when they get called out.

Ruby made those accusations to punish her son for daring to escape, because she blames him for her rough situation. If shes going down she wants to drag him down with her as much as she can. Its disgusting, i think she wants to prove that to her children that they will never be free of her. I have known parents like this sadly and I have zero doubt that everything she is doing while in that cell is to continue to hurt those poor children.

She's probably not lying. Child-on-child CSA is real. Left unaddressed it can lead to escalation of behaviours (eg Josh Duggar, and the diving guy) and traumatized adults reacting like Jody & Ruby did to try and correct it. Thus creating more harm and perpetuating more trauma. Child-on-child CSA is just as traumatic to people when they start to appreciate what was done to them. Unaddressed it goes unreported and then more children are harmed. Jody and Ruby went about this the totally wrong and harmful way. Who did the child learn these behaviours from? It's never just kids being curious. There's always a precipitation event. The authorities need allow access to specialist counseling for all parties involved in child-on-child CSA

Jodi shows all the Hallmarks of a budding cult leader. I have little doubt that Ruby was influenced, and given she was already deeply cruel to her children it likely made it easier to increase the level of cruelty with minimal conative dissonance. Kevin is just as bad for not exercising his parental rights to try to do anything for his kids. I hope those kids finally get to be with safe people who will get them all the help and support they need

This is deeper a dive into this story than I have heard anywhere. Thank you for going down the rabbit hole and making sense of it for us. The thing about Jody I see is she focused on sxual “crimes” because she may have some deviance herself. Many times the biggest haters have skeletons 9 foot tall in their own closets. Jody was the queen of mind games not mind healing. She should never had gotten her licence back.
