@@despraterado588 Indeed you can but SHOULD you, absolutely NOT. Petzel themselves are clear on the proper use of this device, and state that it is imperative the brake side of the rope is always held. The pulley reduces rope friction wear from rubbing on the carabiner. Also you should have had a 6mm lead from your hand ascender to your harness incase the Grigri failed it could have saved your life.

I don't even know where to start: - Never let your hand of the break rope behind the GriGri! Never, Never, Ever! That gets people killed - Never take any non rated piece of equipment for any climbing activity! - The anchor on top is not backed up. The first rule is that everything needs to be set up with a backup. Redundancy is king. treat everything as it can fail in every minute - The GriGri is a device for sport climbing, to for your application, it is not suppose to lock 100% there are other professional devices for those application - The Micro Traction is designed to lock the rope in one direction (if correctly engaged) , so it can act as a 3rd hand in a system. - Even in the times of online shopping: personal safety equipment should never be returned. If a shop refunds your purchases the equipment needs to be destroyed That list can be continued for another 3 pages

@stephan_1507 Can you point to videos or articles with good diagrams for tree climbing with ropes and devices (grigri, micro-traction, one hand ascender)? Which device provides 100% locking if I am to entertain cutting tree limbs on a tree ascent. Most tubers are not suited for teaching and explaining where things are attached to and why. How to go about understanding the weakest link in a particular configuration. WL, BMS. GriGri don't show KN rating instead they list certifications? Most belay devices stop at 11mm ropes, why? How and where to create reasonable redundancies eg. should I be attached to a backup rope 100% of the time, is that feasible? Thank you.

Can't properly see but at 13:42 it looks like you have a karabiner hooked through the rope and resting on the metal. There is a lot of side load on that karabiner and I do not believe they are designed to handle that much side load. A big tree or something with some diameter yes but probably not a small pipe. I would suggest you get a small 18mm wide climbing sling at whatever length you need. Wrap that around the pipe and clip the rope on to that.

I'm glad someone else with more rope ascension skills was able to teach you. You're going to get some massive forearm muscles soon doing all this rope work!

Adjust the lenght of everything to make it far more efficient. Also a warning; the Grigri will slip when it's not under tension. slowly release the pressure on it can cause it not to lock. (the idustrial versions like the RIG or ID's have a lock function for this). A simple pulley is beter for this application, however using the progress capture feature, you can use it to add safety as it will prevent you from falling when te grigri slips. If you keep the Microtraxion, replace D shap carabiner with a oval. This keep the load inline.

I have used a similar system for getting into and out of a deep cave (180m). Some tips to make it easier: 1) use 2 foot loops on one sling so both legs can help you to ascend. 2) Keep your feet below your body weight (i.e. under your bum) and step up gently. Your hand on the ascender is used for balance only, not to pull you up. If it helps you can keep the rope between your feet. If you get the technique right and keep the rope vertical, you can do this for an hour without breaking a sweat.

THREAD FOR THINGS WRONG IN THIS VIDEO. Things wrong here: - single anchor at top. - carabiner in single anchor is extremely cross loaded. - GriGri is not an ascending nor a descending device. It’s a belay device for climbing. You are not using it properly. - The GriGri will let rope out slightly when under tension, lowering you. - ascender does not have a carabiner at the top locking it to the rope. - there is no backup (knots) in the system. If the (wrongly used) GriGri fails, he would be stuck on a improperly used ascender. All he would have is an ascender and no backup knots. - Mixing non-rated carabiners with rates carabiners (nitpicking #1) - finger less gloves (nitpicking #2) Feel free to list other things you see that are wrong in this video to encourage others to not use this technique.
@benjohnson55176 жыл бұрын
The GriGri can be used for ascending and descending according to the American Mountain Guides (AMGA) as long as you always keep your hand on the brake or tie a catastrophe knot in the brake strand. All of your other points are very true.
@BecauseYouHaveToHaveANickNow5 жыл бұрын
Other than the gloves, you probably wrote most of the things I thought of when watching the video. Those gloves are actually very good (I use them for T5 Geocaching). Black Diamond managed to find the exact sweetspot between allowing you to operate small objects (eg opening the cache container) without taking them off and not burning your fingers when braking the rope. What I would add (as an amateur without any course but with at least 100 trees climbed using SRT and some with RAD): - No way to retrieve the rope from the anchoring point (I can't see any second line or rope). - No lanyard connected to the hand ascender. He might get away with with when climbing RAD, but when he starts using that croll it will technically be his only connection to the rope (which it shouldn't be according to the manual and common sense). - Having the pulley at the bottom shortens your moves. I attach it at the top (so the move can be longer a few cm and the hand ascender is secured in the process). - He stated that he has problems keeping the croll vertically. It means he hasn't found that tiny loop attachment he should have got with the harness... - He stated it turned out he doesn't need the foot ascender. It's impossible to use it with the grigri (or an actual self braking descender) but he'll need it with the croll (especially at the beginning of the ascent). The croll has quite a lot of friction and you need the foot ascender to pull the rope from it (and it requiress less strenght to actually go up with 2 legs pushing). - You don't need weights with the foot ascender. You just need to go 1-2 meters up, and then the rope below is heavy enough. - That rope is PROBABLY dynamic which dampens part of energy put into climbing. (I might be wrong with this one but where I come from, statics are white or black and dynamics are coloured).
@Schatzjaeger24 жыл бұрын
- He also states that the pulley (Micro Traxion) does not help him in any way, which is not really correct.

I got a little tickled about your self rescue simply because I've been there.. Just today, I was experimenting with a foot and a hand ascender when my hitch failed. It just stopped grabbing... Unable to disconnect it, my foot ended up locked on the rope. Fortunately, I was able to hook an end of my lanyard to a carabiner on the bottom of the hand ascender which held my weight and gave my arms a break. I was just about to start cutting stuff when using the hand ascender and my lanyard, I was finally able to pull myself up high enough to release my foot. I'm also looking into this for recreational tree climbing - and my research would suggest a micro-pulley at the hand grab - as opposed to the friction grab. the reason is less friction on your rope. less friction/less wear. however - the friction grab is a nice safety backup if your gri-gri doesn't grab right away. I too purchased a hand ascender, foot loop, gri gri 2, and screw gate carabiners. can't wait to start climbing.

Glad to see someone was able to give you some help. A little background RE the RADS system and the why behind the pulley attached to the hand ascender. From what I was told, the RADS was developed for inspectors in a containerized shipping facility. The pulley is there to give mechanical advantage as well as to let your off side do some of the work. I'd switch out the traxion for a standard pulley, though, if you even bother. Like you said, it's easy enough to run it through the biner. You don't need progress capture on the pulley, it's just one more thing to need to disengage. However, the pulley does eliminate quite a bit of friction, which prolongs your ropes life. It's really not necessary with the short distance you're travelling, but you could also try a MechRADS. All this would entail is using a foot ascender on the tail end of the rope, rather than just pulling it down with your right hand.
@jima46562 жыл бұрын
Most guys rig a "third hand" auto block knot on the brake strand that comes off their ATC to prevent the issue you described. I use an ATC Guide for gain capture in the same way you use other devices. It works well for that, but there is some work in changing it over to descend mode. The Grigri is easier in that respect. You are missing some other common safety practices, like a catastrophe knot.

A Notch Jet Step for ascending, a Rescue 8 for descending (with a tending prusik and belay extender/sling). The grigri is not primary for ascending but helps not to switch out when going up and down, and creates a mechanical advantage (not much advantage comparing to the Notch Jet Step which like stepping on a ladder. Place the pulley and biner in the top accessory hole of the ascender, you need more space between it and the gri gri to pull more rope each time. Also that brake hand on the hip is not right place for arresting the rope w gri gri, the rope should arrest right below the gri gri through the carabiner should you need to. There are a few vids on here showing that and also for locking it safely off. Also use a secondary safety line with another attachment usually a prusik knot on a loop.
@samuelwild42395 жыл бұрын
Best thing to do would be to go on a IRATA Level 1 course but it looks like you're doing it right in terms of the RADS technique. However "Rapid" really refers to the changeover to descent in this system - there are other far more swift/effective methods of ascending and then changing to your GRIGRI to descend. - Instead of using the GRIGRI as progress capture, use your croll. To be more upright, tighten your harness upper a bit along with the waist belt and connections between the leg loops and waist belt. - Use the hand ascender and foot tape in conjunction with the foot ascender. The easiest way is to start with the hand ascender for a few strokes then sit back into the croll, attach the foot ascender when you have a bit of rope below you and then keep your feet next to each other. You advance up the rope like a Frog - push up with both legs till standing then advance the hand ascender and so on. This technique is so much faster and more efficient that it negates the time taken to switch over to the GRIGRI. - Finally, when you want to switch to descent, fit the GRIGRI to the rope correctly and attach it to your harness' attachment point. It should be on the rope below the Croll. Step up on your foot tape to unweight the Croll and you should be able to take it off. Then carefully sit down into the GRIGRI. then remove the hand ascender and descend.

@perryfire16 жыл бұрын
That was funny to watch. haha. Your anchor at the top is unsafe. Cross loading a carabiner like that is bad. A tensionless anchor would do just fine for that, look it up. You need a back-up line in case the main fails, this is called a belay. Look into a Petzl ASAP. Lots of guys don't use a belay but that's a chance not worth taking imo. No need for Petzl traction at the hand ascender but along as you keep it in the freespool mode it will work just fine. You want a pulley there however as the friction with a carabiner adds up in effort. Try using your foot ascender on the tail of the rope coming from the pulley. Drop the foot loop. Life will get a lot easier but you'll have to coordinate your movements a bit more. Rads stands for rapid ascent which isn't true. Use the knockoff Croll if you want to see some speed. But you have to train yourself to get into descent mode first. Good luck and stay safe.

I was just waiting for your anchor connection to fail and you had no back up secondary line in place to arrest your fall if that were to happen. You will also learn about the equip to use so you won't waste anymore money buying stuff you don't need or won't work for you. Rope access is tough and you need to be fit to do it so know that there are also motorised devices that you can use without any effort these days too. For example, Unidrive and Skyhooks. When used with a seat they are also comfortable to use. I use them whenever I can because I have a stoma and tire easily because I get chemo treatment so I don't want to be using too much core and using my energy up climbing.

It appears that the pulley, attached to the bottom of your ascender, is giving you a 2:1 mechanical advantage when you pull the slack end of your climbing rope. It should be more difficult without the pulley in place. Using a caribiner as a pulley inside the z-rig, mechanical advantage system would work but, it adds more friction while the pulley would be much smoother.

It did look marginally easier with the progress pulley. As I understand, this also added a second lock mechanism for safety. I’d like to see how the Pantin foot ascender added to this would make it easier. It’s the exact same system I’ve been putting together

Great video. I watched a lot of these and I learned more from you then many of the others (even though they are experts and you are not yet).

There are about a dozen different ways to do this properly, and this video takes a lot of the wrong things from each of them and combines them into a dangerous and inefficient technique. There are better ways to do everything in the video. I mean everything! The ascending, descending, gear combinations, things you said about manufacturers, level of experience before deciding to teach, certain things you said (a locking D-shaped carabiner is not a D Ring) and the list goes on. The good news is that there are plenty of groups that are willing to show you a safer, cheaper, more efficient way to do what you're trying to do and they would love to promote safety. Your platform here is a great way to reach people, and those people deserve to see the safe way to do things.

I see this video is from years ago....are you still alive? Or did you by some miracle not fall and die..These are the videos that new climbers watch and go fall to their death. Scary to think I'm on a wall with people with this knowledge. I hope you have learned proper practice and best of luck to you. But some things shouldn't be put on youtube for kids and new climbers to see, this is one of them.

Might also consider both feet in the loop for standing while you work, or two loops, one for each foot.

I think after adding in the foot ascender (pantin), it’ll add an extra element to make ascending faster

At around 20 ft I would just use inexpensive scaffolding.Move the tables over ,then move them back. Doing the work of closing off the ends of the insulation will be very hard to do,requiring moving the rope which means more ladder work defeating the purpose of the rope climbing.Plus navigating material up there while using the rope seems not doable. sorry for being a negative nancy and I sincerely hope he can do it.
@JDAfrica2 жыл бұрын
I agree to a point ... for this application a ladder or scaffold would work better... but, beyond that, and as a way to build additional skills ... that’s the benefit. As this system can be used for tree climbing / pruning as well. For high scaffold work, you would need additional safety gear, and harness - so, the investment into safety gear isn’t wasted.

Thank you for showing us how to use the grigri, self belay. Is there an easier way to go up, like with a knee ascender, or something, with what you already have? You seem to be out of breath doing it this way.
@johnverkler39623 жыл бұрын
You need a Rope Wrench, a 30" prussic cord, to tie a climbing hitch, a hitch climber 3 hole pulley, a knee ascender, to go with your foot ascender, a safe top rope connection, to climb a tree. Good instructions from a professional. You need scaffolding to do your insulation job. You don't need to buy it, you can rent it. Unless you can use it for different other jobs then buy it. Am I wrong? Correct me if I am wrong.
@tonyerwin98437 жыл бұрын
Looks like you are going to need a ladder to initially attach your rope. While this looks like fun, I can’t see how much work is going to get done this way. If I were you I’d keep my eye on Craigslist for a small electric man lift, you could then use your climbing gear as a safety harness. Just my 2 cents.
@kevinbyrne45387 жыл бұрын
Yes. I doubt that this rope climbing gear is practical for actually working near the roof. If he intends to move big pieces of insulation, he'll need to move over longer distances than this rope gear will allow.

Dude, I did exactly what you did. I wish I saw your channel before I've spent all this money! Bought a lot of gadgets, I still can't ascend and descend like the ones I've watch on you tube. It's almost a scam. You're lucky, you can send them back, mine I've ditch the packaging and all, I can't return them. I've spent almost $800.00 at the latest. I still haven't made a decent climb and descent. My hope is that I can figure out how to justify these purchases in the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, I'll just keep trying to climb up and then maybe climb down. Thanks for sharing your video.

Please attend an appropriate course, you simply do not know what you are talking about. Yes you get somethings right but it is hardly a good idea to give advice with the level of knowledge you have as it is hard for a beginner to separate good from bad device (read: potentially dangerous)
@Maverick72nd6 жыл бұрын
You are still doing it wrong. The grigri should never hold your weight with the brake hand loose from the rope - UNLESS you have tied it of (look at petzl.com). That’s why you have the one way micro pulley. That will hold you. If you want to do it like this you have to use the petzl i’d. Wich is a grigri on steroids that also can be locked for hands off work.
