In my second part of a week on "great hot hatches which aren't Renaults", we look at this 2000 Peugeot 306 Rallye. A lightened version of the famed GTI-6, the Rallye has often been lauded as the greatest hot hatch ever - is it really that good?

One of the best hot hatches I've ever driven, 5 years a go I made the mistake of buying a mk3 Golf 16v instead on the basis that their prices would rise faster than the 306's, not the case as it would seem!

Had a GTi-6 a few years ago. Brilliant hot hatch, lovely flat torque curve and the engine will just pull and pull. Coupled with the close ratio 6 speed box it's fantastic, 3rd gear would absolutely eat up b-roads. Felt like you didn't give enough time to cover the handling which was it's main feature really. Fantastic steering feel and feedback, don't think i've had anything since which was quite so confidence inspiring as you always knew exactly what it was doing.

This is the best Peugeot of all time. Forget about the Mi16 or the 106/Saxo - VTS/R This car wasn't just quick, it was actually useful. You could carry your mates comfortably, it was more reliable (as reliable as a French car can be) it was better on fuel, cheaper to insure and it was actually comfortable. The other small french hot hatches were absolutely bone breakers!! And let's be honest, Saxos and 106s were for 17-19 year old British chavs back in the early 00s lol.

I owned one of these second hand. But it wasn't really second hand. The previous owner was in his 70s and God knows how they managed to convince him to buy it, but after 3 days of ownership he returned it. He complained that it was far to quick 😅😅 So I got it for less than half original price!! I was just 19 when this came out and it was my first car and I got insured no problem at all. And I lived in a rough scheme in Aberdeen, I had a very basic job, it was kept on the street overnight (something which I would regret later) and all in it cost me £788 and that was way back then. So if you adjust for inflation, it's probably around the £1,500-2,000 mark!!!! Basically every penny I earned went on insurance, fuel and road tax 😂😂 Those were the days eh!! When still had mum and dad giving me hand outs and feeding me lol.

ive had a 106 GTi and currently drive a 605 2.0 Turbo, and can do nothing but agree, the 106 was of course the better handling car, but it still was a very comfortable car, even for those who sat in the back, atleast compared to rest of the cars of that size, and the 605, while not being exactly a specimen in performance still is kinda fun to whip around, although i am stuck with an automatic, cant imagine how fun it might be with a manual and perhaps that 3.0 V6.

I've owned some awesome cars (currently a 981 Cayman S) and driven many more that are extremely highly rated (GT-R, 911, Vantage, M6 etc) but as far as I'm concerned there is nothing more fun than this. Looks incredible, they're very comfy and practical, very reliable, it sounds better than almost all other 4-pots (my ears are still bleeding after test driving an FK8) and handles like no other FWD car, can't drift a Clio of any kind like this thing. It's not perfect, but going into a corner too fast in one of these will put a bigger smile on your face than anything else a car can do. I'd probably take a GTi-6 over the Rallye though to be fair. Edit: Im just going to say that simply by reviewing this and liking it, JayEmm is now my favourite car KZbinr. Ok maybe joint with Cars with JB in the same way this is actually my joint favourite car because they're both awesome.

What you can do with this 306 Rallye you can do with pretty much any other French hot hatch, they were all born from rallying, and that's why they always blast the competition when it came for this kinds of cars. Clio RS (all generations), Williams, 205 GTI, Saxo VTS, 106 GTI, 206 RC.
@ApothecaryTerry
@ApothecaryTerry 2 жыл бұрын
@@rubenvalente They're all great cars. For me though, the 306 tops the list. The way you can control both the front and rear end of that chassis with its rear wheel steering is something I've not found anything can match. It's also my favourite to look at and genuinely comfy to top it off. Subjective of course, but it'll always be my favourite, it just responds perfectly to my driving style. Shame even the normal 306 GTi-6 is at the point where I couldn't convince myself to daily drive it else I'd have one for sure.

I had A GTI-6 to replace my Astra GTE 16 valve ... both had amazing engines, I had a quick shift fitted which sorted the awful gear shift. Bits kept on falling of it and I sold it in 2002 with only 47,000 miles because of the issues, my Astra had covered 90 k with no issues. The 0-60 quoted was misleading because it had tall gearing in second so it felt like a 7 second car, and some write ups said as much. I never felt as confident as I did in the Astra, it felt heavy, and the steering was better, but the Astra I had was the leather, or Champion edition which ran lower profile tyres on bigger bbs alloys as standard and was more communicative. The Astra was a great car for driving fast around country roads, what it lost in ultimate precision it gained in comfort and ease of driving. The 16 valve had lower and firmer suspension than the wobbly 8 valve with anti roll bars front and rear and an extra degree of negative camber.

306 handled like a dream, but 205 more chunk-able. I think the 306 has been my favourite handling car I have owned, well favourite front wheel drive. Original "quality" trim is not what you want. 18 months of ownership and window winder broken heater control broken trim hanging off. Still my Megane of same vintage was not much better but drove nothing like as well and driving position of Megane 1 was pretty poor.

I miss my 306 XSi. I did find putting 17" wheels helped instead of the std 15" wheels helped give a better ratio for pulling the car up a hill at lower revs. It was a real pleasure to drive on motorways. What was it about the gearbox you didn't like? There is an exposed ball on the linkage that gets coated in debis and the grease dries out as it's close to the exhaust. When it's been cleaned out and greased the mechanisam is silky smooth.

I had the 306 dturbo which had the fuel pump turned up and updated suspension and Alloys. Absolute weapon on a country road, and a wet road you had to be extremely careful not to back off mid corner. Sold that to buy the Williams, although very tempted to buy the 306 rallye but didn't feel it looked much different from a normal GTI-6. 15" white steels is what it needed. Real shame, the Williams had lovely Gold and looked like the real deal. Performance wise and handling wise there's not much in it (having raced one) apart from the Clio felt more on it's toes and happier on the limit.

I drove a 306 from London to near Perigeux in the Dordogne and thought it had excellent steering,suspension, chassis control and comfort for the early 1990’s...

jase_llan Not yet on a more fiddly Lucas pump as apposed to the Bosch, and don’t think the xud motor has that much life left in it.

@jase_llan 3 жыл бұрын
@@hero-wp7tm that's fair enough, I was referring to the older Bosch pump - isn't that also the one that means you can get the engine running with only 5 wires? Seen the XUDs used in kit cars for this reason.

Great cars, had a 1998 Diablo Gti-6 years ago. Fantastic handling and engine and had no issues. Weak cam belts though and need changing regularly. They made 500 Rallyes available in 3 colours, I forget the ratio but it was something like 200 red, 200 black and 100 white and they actually made one in blue too. Remember to n 1996 when these first came out, having a 6 speed gearbox was a revelation in a hatchback, the turning circle really suffered for it though. Overall a good reliable car, I know some of these that have smashed 200k miles.

Really? You suprised a couple of EP3 Type-R? I find that hard to believe. Specially since the civic type-r was probably the most powerful hothatch of that generation. It's for a reason why the K20A is a very sought after engine. Compared to the engine of this peugeot.

I had a 1999 Black Rallye, had it rolling roaded at Dyno Dynamics, made 149bhp, drove a couple of other GTI-6's and they felt about the same so I suspect Peugeot hyped the power output somewhat..

What about the Civic VTi of the time?(Or the Jordan if you want something that actually looks like a hot hatch in standard trim) would that not have been a more direct competitor to the 306 GTi in terms of the hot hatches on the market at the time?

306 as a model in general, is probably the best choice if you're out for an analog driving experience, which is fun as fuck, and a relatively comfy ride when you settle down. The back seats are pretty comfy and roomy, the sport seats are not that good, but the standard ones are comfy as hell. The car is very reliable, especially the diesels, and parts are everywhere. Oh, and you shouldn't phase out the diesels, especially the 71ps 1.9 NA diesel. It is much faster and much more fun than you expect, and after swapping out the air filter and removing the cat (DON'T STRAIGHTPIPE IT), you'll get one of the best 4banger diesel noises out there. Tame and somewhat quiet at low RPMs and sharp and peppy at high RPMs. I have a 306 1.9d 71, had it for 18 years now, and it goes from 0-60 in 11 secs flat, which is pretty peppy for such a weak engine. Also the cars have a relatively well made bodywork that is galvanizes, but they do tend to rust behind the rear pillars, especially the three door versions.
