Peugeot 308 overheating but coolant fan not coming on !

Glad I found this. My car came up with an engine light. I checked the little ODB and it showed some codes around temps. Checked the fan and this plastic string was all in the fan. I removed it and thought that was that. The fan still won't come on and I started thinking back to how hot it's been in the car even on moderate days and realised that the fan probably hasn't worked for at least a couple of months. Back to the drawing board for me!

This model and other make Citroen have same components. I have got C4 Picasso and same problem. Sometimes will be resistor on the fan control unit by the fan radiator and when replaced fan will be working, other issue is low under fan is flexible tube with wiring, water collects there and corrode wires. and than no signal to ECM ( corroded wire ) or ECM it self. In those cars Peugeot and Citroen ECM it has switched earth on the fan control unit low speed and high speed can't be running at once Pin 2,3 should be 12 and 0 V or vice versa one wire will work as ground switched by ECM. Mine Picasso had corroded wire and short on earth but not on wires internally in ECM. Did all tests and stripped all looms and checked all wires. The last point is ECM. I'm taking out and reprogram and if will not work replace for clone.

Just another thought Sandy. At 5:13 into this video the fan control module appears to have a feedback to the ECM. Pin 4? Possibly the circuit or module is sending a feedback that the fan is already running? I wonder what is supposed to be on that Circuit. On your part 2 video I saw it boiling in the recovery bottle but is it holding pressure. If it's a 15 psi pressure system should not boil til around 255f. I'd connect a variable resistor in place of the ect and manipulate the temperature with the resistor to see what temp the low and high speeds come on at. Some of our vehicles won't run the fan til 110c so if there's no pressure it boils before that. Good luck.

Your having the same nightmare as me pal.. I'm bought a 308 sw, 2011.. As soon as I get to 65 it overheats and get stop, engine temp, emgine fault, temp gauge blasts into red for about 10 secs the drops bk to normal and warning lights go off to normal that happens every 30 secs or so had it in garage and same.. Its a head scratch aiint it.. One thing I noticed when I drive with air con on the radiator fan works and I have no problems at 65mph plus.. I turn air con off and it starts warning again driving me radio rental kazental.. The engine isn't overheating tho my diagnostic says its electrical bsi and fans.. I need an auto electrician badly as I'm still on 30 day warranty can't get it back down south to dealer for refund .

Does it possibly have more than one temperature sensor. I don't have wiring diagrams for that car here in Canada so I'm not sure. I've seen some imports with more than one temp sensor. If you can command it on with bidirectional control from the scanner it must be a bad input. Good luck

Hi Phillip call main dealer just to check there is only one coolant temperature sensor. Funny thing it was working fine for initial 20 mins cycling the fan then it went to pot with no additional codes, take care, cheers sandy

I am writing from turkey Peugeot 308 1.6 VTi fans staffed and over-voice working temperature 90 a thermostat circulation has changed improvement solutions looked well located did not electrician looked at services from you I appreciate your help in this matter

I'm just looking as my 05 307 sw seems the same I'm sure the fan should come on when a/c is switched on, but not now, a/c is gassed pump engages blows warm. Fan is good at fan. Also ABS dashboard light is on. renewed cooling fan resistor ,still the same, still looking. (fan is good)

Radical thought! Is there any chance that the fan won’t run with the bonnet open to prevent possible injury? To that end, does it have a bonnet switch and can you prove operation? (None of that comment is based on fact but wouldn’t take long to check?)

To me it’s got to be an input problem of some sort or the module/software itself. Your bi-directional test has proved that the ECU has control of the fans and that they operate. I’m interested to see the outcome of this one, my feeling is it’ll be something unusual.

Sandy help please!! Watched your video having done most of the things you have but code P0483open circuit temp to high. permanent fault. Checked fan ok. New resistor. Haven't checked wires from resistor to ecu as relays click on high & low fan speed through diag. Pulled temp sensor logged as fault still no fan. Checked all fuses. Checked wiring harness and plugs all good.

Suspecting a different sensor needs looking at, as others have said the car maybe looking at a different input for the fan...try a bsi reset or even a software update

@@sandyande its usually a manual reset if it has one iirc you mess about with the windows etc it has flagged a code for the bsi reset

Hello my friend I didn't think it had one because the fan blower module is controlled by the ECM, but do u think there is where would it be located cheers sandy

@@sandyande Had an Astra H with same over heating fault and fan non starting .It was the thermal switch located at the bottom of cooling radiator .When engine is hot and fan not spinning simply disconnect the 2 wire connector and make short across the engine side of connector ,if fan start that switch is the culprit .Cheers !

What model is the verus your using and what do you find a better scanner verus or solus?

Hi this a original verus model running 14.4 software, I like it compared to solus because of guided component test, wiring diagrams and 4 channel scope cheers sandy

Hi sandy, thanks for the reply.. is it just called a verus? I’m looking to buy one but is see verus verus D10, Verus pro, And Verus Edge. Do you know the differences in these ? A lot of differences in prices for some of them, especially the edge, which seems To be the most expensive. Also have a 308 1.4 here I’m working on at the minute with the fans on constantly and temperature guage going into the red even from cold start up and saying engine temp faault on the screen inside, the fans take about 10 mins to go off after switching engine off and taking key out, but it’s not over heating. Getting 2 faults - Disengagable Coolant pump short circuit to Earth : Permanent and intake manifold pressure sensor coherence status permanent. I don’t know what a disengagable coolant pump is and no one seems to be able to tell me what it is. Even Peugeot/ Citroen dealer. Only thing I could think of Is a water pump, but have looked it up and it’s not an electrical water pump on the car. Also have changed the temperature sensor but doesn’t seem to make a difference. Any ideas or have you came across this ?

Sorry Sean I missed this post, snap on edge is the latest so most expensive expect £2-3k for it then the pro, d10 and lastly original verus like mine. These pugs have lots of issue with the fancy fuse box BSM so a fault there could be your check for water ingress (remove 3 multiplugs check for the green stuff) if u replace it coding is required! Check ECU multiplug also. Cheap clone Delphi scan tool works well on pugs cheers sandy
