Great to see this restoration. They were so common in the 80s and 90s. In a different world these would have been called the Talbot Arizona. Talbot designed it to replace the Horizon before the Peugeot take over which is why they don't fit into the Peugeot numbering ending 09.

I can tell you’re excited about driving that. I had a none turbo 1.9 306 was as slow a glacier but it would go to the moon and back on a gallon of kreasote.

My dad had one of these in the mid 90's up to early 2000's. His was the 1.9 GRD non turbo and it was a tank. Never let us down and we went all over the country in it. Shame you don't see them anymore.

My first car was a 309, 1.4 litre petrol. Never drove a nicer feeling car, everything on it was just perfectly weighted and mechanical, hence I still got it and she's been sitting for a few years waiting for a restoration. Put a new shorter ratio gearbox in her recently, and in my country there are only about 8 309s left on the road, so it's a pretty rare beast.

Just loved 205`s & 309 diesels back in the day. They rarely gave trouble. I bought & sold a shed load in the late 90`s, the phone never used to stop for them. The grdt was actually a really good spec & a good news car back then,

Love watching your channel as a newly qualified mechanic at 40 years old , the french cars are my thing, when I passed my car test 20+ years ago all these French cars were still on the road, one of my first cars was 309 1.4 style, nice and easy xud diesel what was in the 405 and 306, I didn't have much to do with the 1.7 diesel, the Axel was so a common thing like you said for mot fails keep them video coming thanks kieren

Me and me cousin could do a axle change from driving in to out inside a hour on a good day. 5 on a bad one. Exhaust brakes fuel neck and 4 x 17mm and 2 x 19 mm bolts inside and drop. A old boy made a press to do a full re con the beams. He also drilled the case to put grease nipples in to keep the bearings lubed. It was quicker for us to do a re con exchange or keep a eye at various scrappies. I put a Exantia SRDT 130 bhp in my 305 van. It scared a few folk. You should put a type wrighter and two jump leads on the pug for a antilog diagnostic check. Confuse the young ones. lol

Love the Motor! Did one (with the owner helping!) about 5 weeks ago - the "Special Tool" he had would budge nowt on opposite side to yours - the passenger side was free moving. I did bad things to the old seized stuff while the owner winced & covered his eyes. Lol. We'd have been there till next Christmas otherwise. What I lurnt is bigger, heavier the length of bar you can get in, harder it pushes stuff out when you hit it using the Large hammer. I ended up using a 7 foot length of solid shaft - which rapidly "Explained Better" to the seized stuff. I'm with you there on the end - if the car had been mine, the whole axle would have been coming off for blasting & repainting, but it was a saturday & the chap was in a hurry, so that didn't get done.

Poor 309, unwanted and unloved by Peugeot, was supposed to be the Talbot Arizona if memory serves, a replacement for the Horizon. My first 405 had a leaning rear wheel on the nearside. Never understood why the TD wasn't intercooled in the 205 and 309 like it was in the 405. Don't think any glove box survived, but I've never seen one with a bolt fitted 😅

Thanks for sharing this one with us. Brings back very fond memories as i had a Peugeot 309 GL 1.6 on an H plate. Didnt have the gadgets your example has, but it had the sliding sunroof like yours. I can honestly say it was the most reliable and best car i ever had, especially when i traded it in for a Vauxhall Vectra, that after its first service whilst i had it was a constant unreliable piece of sh**e. Im looking forward to seeing the progress of this project. Keep up the good work!

Seeing you work on this car from Peugeot, reminds me that I learnt to drive in one of these and the car was a 309 GRD without the TURBO, however it went very well and I even passed my test in the same car too and also if I could I would most definitely have a 309 DTURBO for my daily driver too and until next time TaRa for a bit.

Random thought Pity they didn't keep the "separate" warning light section that you saw with the earlier 205's and Visa. I liked that layout. Kent Police went from Escorts to 309's and stayed with Peugeot for nearly 20 years. I wonder if it would have been as successful as the Talbot Arizona? Interesting too thar there have been new generations of Peugeot 308's, but not a new "309" yet! 🙂

Well that took some serious beating but you got there in the end. For 32 year old car, it’s not too bad. No electronics or DPF to cause trouble either. Only recently discovered your channel and really enjoy watching your videos. What is unusual is that I live 10 miles down the road from where you’re based, no prizes for guessing which town that is.
