Thank's, great video. I just went to change the shoes today, but I coudn't see the adjuster and I tought might good idea to find solution on the net. This video popped up in google, straight away. I'm glad to watch it, before I did anything, because I wanted to remove the caliper too, to tae the disc off. Now I see I don't have to. Thank's again!

There are two ways of adjusting the handbrake. One is turn the adjustment wheel that separates the brake shoes. keep turning it with your lever until the brakes start to bind. Apply handbrake to reset them and try again. Repeat until the brakes are binding then back off slightly till running free. The second is using the adjustable rod on the passanger side of the rear cable. This is usually rusted so may need cleaning before it will move. Hope that helps e

The retaining pins are located differently in peugeots. The pins on this peugeot locate into a hole in the backing plate. When this goes and it does it requires the whole backing plate to be replaced. Is a hell of a job. From memory the vauxhall pin is pushed in from the back and secured with a holed cup washer. These rust away as well but easier and cheaper to replace than the peugeot.

You can take an angle grinder to the backing plate and remove the metal to metal or the rust to rust contact point. These items are sold occasionally on Ebay. So worth looking out for them. Some are very good condition like the two I got a few months ago for £10 each. I have noticed some of the cars have alloy pins which corrode weld in the holes. The trick to remove is break them in the middle with a chisel. It is a lot easier to get the two halves out rather than the whole thing.

As promised I have uploaded a video to indicate the build up of rust can result in friction of the discs and back plate as you mentioned in your video. I won't tell you the amount of money I have spent trying to diagnose everything else apart from this but I hope more people will view your video.

bunnybr, great video. The instruction are very clear and I know first hand how difficult asembling the shoes afterwards. You have also given me an area of investigation to carry out with regards to the poor fuel economy. If it works out to be true I shall post a video response back to this.

Great video, just about to do the same thing bolting my shoes on as the pins have pulled through - back plates are main dealer only and cost £98 each (only paid £870 for the whole car!) Paid for new pad and shoe fitting kits though because the pad pins are heavily corroded and will need cutting & drilling to remove and shoe springs have been damaged since pin pulled through. Think I'll need to use some e-metal to save the back-plate too.

Many thanks for that. When I came to service the brakes, the hanbrake cables had rusted and broken!! Where they come through the caliper, do they just follow the bend in the tensioner and sit there??? and as I'm replacing both handbrake cables, do I tension them up first and then use the little wheel to do fine adjustment?? Many thanks for your advice, you make the job a lot less daunting!!!!

Great video, very helpful. The only thing I'm not sure about is the re-fitting of the handbrake cable when you put the shoes back on and how you adjust it correctly. Can you offer any advice on this??

Ah there was Prouts garage that went from Austin Morris to Peugeot briefly as the garage was going down hill , this was before Peugeot and Talbot were joined , when Peugeot bought out Talbot prouts wouldn't build a showroom so Truscotts took the Peugeot franchise from them , I believe several of their mechanics wouldnt work on Peugeots , and left aided by the fact the garage was winding down , maybe this solves the mystery ??

Be carreful, on your rear springs you have a part in rubber wich reduce the amplitude of the suspension. This part was put during the assembly of the car to be transported in trucks. But before the delivery, they forgotten to remove it!! So you never enjoy the real comfort and handling of your 406, what a shame!!! (your video starts with a grey 406 wich is ok, but not the red one after)

I am changing my rear discs and brakes this weekend. Do I need to put copper grease between pads and discs and between brake shoes and drums.
@bunnybr
@bunnybr 10 жыл бұрын
Copper grease is only used on the metal to metal sliding contact surfaces. Never on the friction surfaces of the pads and disks, as this would reduce the braking efficiency. Watch the video. It shows where the grease goes. Hope this helps. If you are unsure, get a professional to do it for you.

Yep, just as the man says - my sensor gear wheel on the bearing was destroyed by a floating handbrake pin and spring. Also the disc was heavily scored on the handbrake drum. Not good French design !

Truscotts have NEVER been Ford agents !! they were originally Rootes group ie Hillman , Humber , Singer, , then went to Chrysler which turned to Talbot which were taken over by Peugeot !!!, I have worked there for 30 years and never seen half of the mechanics walk out !!
