Love this more thorough and focused explanation of Felix video, especially from someone who's not familiar with him so you have a more clear intrinsic criticism value to not only showcase his progress but also gives us, the viewers, a better advice if we're ever interesting in the art lane. I think why the original video blew up because of the way Felix approach art differently. Art is synonymous with practice, not only in consistency but also the steps you take to become rather good in certain techniques, style, or perspectives. I think some people had a strong reaction to his progress due to the fact that Felix started the journey from such a mature age, so he's better at some things but also he's more critical of himself. Can't wait to see your analysis on his 1 year art progress. Definitely caught me off guard when I saw the crazy improvement.

I feel like your using the word reference in the same vein as copying. No, he did not copy these 42:38 anime girls. He made them from his imagination. and he used reference in the same way professional artist uses reference. or what you would call "partial reference" It feels like this video is focused on discrediting his progress by saying "No, this isn't his real skill because his referencing (copying) other work even when he wasn't. He did copy from mangas occasionally to build his visual library but he also drew from imagination. like these 43:08 43:10 46:23

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. I've been thinking a lot about how to get past the feeling of set back, and/or the feeling of being a jack-of-all-art-stuff yet master-of-none. Started learning to draw before I was 8. I'm 31 this year... so that's about 22ish years. 5 years of dedicated learning. 4 years of sporadic, but intense practice. 5 years of obsessive/repetitive/volatile practice & learning. 4 years hardly picking up a "pencil". 5-8 years of rare play, but mostly complete creative silence. I feel I've been creating, practicing, and learning for much longer than I haven't been. The years of -not- drawing/painting etc feel so much louder & longer than they actually are. "You're not an artist if you're not doing art." "It doesn't look like you actually want to do this." "You don't sell art, and you've never had an art-related job..." I guess I heard those things one too many times, and stopped sharing that side of myself. I have been questioning whether I only progressed previously because progress back then was so evident. Nowadays, even if I haven't drawn seriously in ages -- I can draw something in 15 minutes after months of not drawing anything, and people say "You're so good at this. I don't understand why you don't go out and get a job doing this now." The reality is that I know what I want to do, but I haven't learned how to practice it, and practicing it feels agonizing. What you said about how learning is a lot like leveling in an RPG -- it takes so much more to level up at 45 than at 15. It's not a novel concept, but sometimes you just need to hear something from the right person, at the right time. I'm a high level in some things, mid level on a lot of things, and basically still level 1 where it matters most to me. Experience points won't gather the same at different points, and maybe I'll find the right class quest to progress what I want. So, I feel you've unlocked something important for me. Thank you

Thanks for the comment! I'm very glad I could help you sort this out and please never feel like you have to justify your art or your status as an artist, if art is your hobby or you only do art occasionally, then you are an artist. Also, just ignore the non artistically inclined people that give you art career advice, sadly, making a living off art is not as easy or glamorous as they may have been led to believe. And now I have to thank you again, because you have given me an idea for a new video about the purpose of art and what it means to be an artist nowadays.

@@damiansketches5975 You’re welcome. I’m sure there are many others grappling with this kind of topic. For the most part, career advice or those kinds of comments didn’t bother me. People come from different life paths and experiences- including fellow artists. But then the people I’ve known for years who are closest to me- and then my life partner… They want to understand, they want to see me reach my goals, and I respect their perspective. It would be nice to find a way to help them understand. Maybe it’s a matter of reconciling the desire to be known vs the urge to keep my creation instinct/process to myself.

Nice video. ^^ It's cool to see someone being more critical of Pewdiepie's drawings, most of the other people are praising Pewds alot, so this is refreshing. Pewds also made a video where he drew for a whole year, are you gonna react to that one too?

Oh it's been that long already, I guess I'll get to it as soon as I can, I've got a couple of videos I need to finish editing first though. Thanks for the comment, I didn't really check what other people were saying before my reaction so I could come in fully blind, but I did get a bit of an impression that everyone was treating him like some sort of genius and this was honestly quite normal progress for a complete beginner that practices consistently for that long, so it was a bit exaggerated I think

@damiansketches5975 I appriciate it when critics don't sugar coat stuff. ^^ I'm excited to see what you have to say in your next videos. ^^
