My art teacher back at high school once told me like "Even if you stop drawing for years, as long as you don't stop observing, you will still grow and able to draw better" Graduated from high school, got degree in vehicle engineering and stop drawing for like 6 years. And 37 years old now have experience in game/animation/graphic design industry. And I still felt that I'm shitty at art. But what that teacher told me is like a dime light at the end of the tunnel. The takeaway is that if you love art, just don't stop. You'll get there.

That’s partially true - but art is a creative, intellectual, spiritual AND physical skill As Chris Oatley quoted in one of his Paperwing Podcasts, “if you read an entire fitness magazine every day for a year, but don’t go to the gym, will you be in better shape in the end?

Felix, moving to Japan, ditching alcohol and getting away from the KZbin Grind was some of his best life decisions. I enjoy watching his "Life in Japan" vlogs. Some artists have complained that they're ditching art, because of Felix's improvement in one year. Their excuse is that he's rich and he has lots of time on his hands because he no longer has to work. Probably the most lame excuse that I've ever heard - LOL.
@AdamDuffArt2 күн бұрын
Hey, this is KZbin, you could interpret anything as negative with enough creativity - but the bottom line is that money doesn’t buy discipline. They say “money and power doesn’t corrupt, it reveals corruption” and it’s clear that Felix has remained a high quality man all these years.

It's astonishing, how much grace, coziness and peace cats radiate. Even through a screen. We're so lucky they allow us to live in their houses. Found Felix' video super inspiring and Cody and I were talking about it on discord, the other day. It feels so refreshing to watch these progress videos with all the errors and struggles and also accomplishments. There are so, so many "perfect" art videos of "perfect" artists on YT, where all errors are edited out or never got uploaded in the first place. You can see what to do and how to do it, but they seem to always get it right first try. And yes, in case of a tutorial, it is very helpful, but in a drawing process I wanna see the ugly, the shitty, the frustration, because it is so relatable and it gives me a reality check, that everybody sucked in the beginning. Best sentence it Felix' video, that really stuck with me is "If you wanna improve, you have to go through the pain of sucking again." Loved that. Now I'm gonna pop out my sketchbook and draw some manga girls :D Have a fantastic weekend!

Consistency and hard (and smart) work make a difference. While the recent focus on mental health and not drawing everyday has some much-needed benefits compared to my earlier days where every professional artist said 'you can't get in the industry if you don't draw 14 hours a day' I fear there might've been an overcorrection. Drawing as much as you can, working on your weaknesses and getting out of your comfort zone while finding new avenues to explore your existing strengths gives you results, and Felix here shows that. Too many use their 'style' as a shield to not learn the fundamentals, even though you can draw better anime or manga inspired art with better fundamentals, and Pewdiepie shows that too.
@AdamDuffArt5 күн бұрын
The 14 hour work day is the tipping point that ruins consistency (over the long term) Moderation but daily practice is the key to growth, just like physical training It’s easier to train daily than weekly - just don’t ruin your body overtraining - both the body AND mind require rest
@APMowl5 күн бұрын
Great points! My favorite takeaway is that mention of when one should seek out guides: when they art themselves into a corner. Been aware of the problem-answer learning structure for a while now and it's very effective. You learn way better if you give your brain a problem to ruminate on, then give it the answer, instead of just mindlessly feeding it information with nothing to connect it to (which is more rote memorization than anything). Draw a raised hand. Why doesn't it look good? What muscles are wrongly flexed? Draw someone lifting something heavy. Why doesn't it look "heavy"? What's wrong with the tension in their limbs? Draw Spider-Man in one of his amazingly dynamic poses. Why does yours look so stiff? How do you make extreme foreshortening work? Giving yourself problems to solve is the way to go. That way you have a real interest in actually learning why things are how they are (instead of, say, learning by heart all the names of all the muscles of the body before having a real need to or actual interest). Cultivate an interest into how things are done and how you can use that to make your work better.

I really like that Felix has "evolved" from entertainer to "this is who I am as a Person and this is what I love and care about". And I think he is doing the Art Community a great service with this, because there are so many people who once did have a general interest in art, but never felt good enough or rewarded enough to keep doing it. Of course there are also people who get discouraged by his progress or who try to downplay his efforts with statements like "Well you are rich, so you have the time.". But we all know that those people are really just searching for excuses and only make up reasons to quit. Art is not about talent...it's a endurance game, we all know that. So those who stop "because of him" would have dropped out either way and those who start or rather start again because of him, are inspired by what he does and what he has brought to the table of the art community. Which is a really good example of: "everyone can be an artis, if they only try."

People, this is normal, he just did what needed to be done to improve, and It could have gone better. People just telling me I was chosen by the art gods or some BS while having pain and sleepless nights on my resume. Not saying he’s taking It badly, but I feel that complimenting art should be the same as anything, recognizing effort, discipline, and dedication. He’s also been a KZbinr for the longest time, he knows how to learn things, and he had to learn multiple endeavors to make his life’s career a success. He knows how to stick to things at a fundamental level, look how his fitness journey went. So if any of the salty side of the community wants to cope with something that’s a good one. Nonetheless, y’all just need to lock in, stop procrastinating and get good. Learn how to learn, this should not be surprising, seriously. Much love 🥰

This year has been the most difficult for me artistically, and weird to say since I barely had anything done at all, or even tried to do something at all. I’ve been a lot in chrisis over what I really want to do, and at the start of the year I’ve got really frustrated since for all the opportunities I just let pass by, I’m probably on the verge of not being the illustrator I wanted to be in the first place, having to dedicate on other things to the point I don’t hace the energy nor the passion to go back at doing art for the rest of my life. I have to admit, I feel this is the lowest I’ve been in my short life at the same time. I am a licensed industrial designer (which seems like I’ve lost my skills on that aswell anyway) and even I’ve failed my own expectations and others aswell in my first job, where they hired me for my major. But you know…. Maybe it isn’t that bad that maybe I stop doing art for a long time, but of course, doesn’t mean I’ll get away from it. It is mostly about only getting around it more than I ever did in my life, and who knows… I hope someday to get inspired enough to go back at it again. Or not, that’s just the worst case scenario. Honestly the most probably it is that I’m just tired of treating art like the only thing I have value for. I wanted to deny it, but it is the real reason why I made it on the first place. I did love doing it of course, but… I don’t think it is the same than others who that’s their main center of their artistic journey. I am healing in some ways, or at least learning. I guess it is time I finally take it easy and not to pressure myself… And now only be a viewer for the people who can help me remember that genuine passion I forgot a long time ago.

This method of becoming good at drawing through an established approach has a long tradition. In Japanese history, the Kano school would teach through scrolls and manuals that instructed people on how to draw. There is a long debate in art history of talent vs practice. In my humble assessment, PewdiePie is learning to draw in tradition with the Kano school. His art is clearly anime inspired. He isn't developing a wholly unique style, he's learning within an established style borrowing visual shortcuts and language established long before he was even born. This isn't to take away from his dedication and work, the style may evolve to become more unique and his own. That being said, I do not see him as genius of visual language, like a Kley, Dore or Hokusai. But does it matter if he is a visual genius? No.
@AdamDuffArt5 күн бұрын
I don’t believe being a genius is his priority- rather, growth. The Japanese practice that better illustrates Felix’s philosophy (which he has quoted numerous times in the past) is “Kaizen”, the pursuit on constant growth and improvement You can see how he tackles this philosophy with a commendable amount of discipline Being the best is a fruitless endeavour- but growth is constantly available, rewarding and nurturing to one’s life

Im like Felix, I taught myself how to draw. Its impressive what he has done in just a year. There were many leftists on Reddit and Twitter that were upset (they had the communist/socialist mindset btw) that how dare a successful rich man who is enjoying his life and having free time to draw and improve while they have to slave away at work. This is the petty mindset these individuals have.

One one hand, Pewdiepie is really inspiring and I do recognize he's doing a lot of good for art community, knowlingly or not. On the other hand however - and I don't expect anyone to understand this, really - it is beyond frustrating to learn for yet another time than anyone can pick up drawing and do more progress in much shorter time than I ever could. Makes me feel hopeless and defective.
@allanredhill86825 күн бұрын
I think it all comes down to his work ethic and understanding of how learning works. So many people try to immediatly jump into anatomy or design when they dont even understand about structure, solid drawing or cant even draw straight lines. The way pewdiepie approached it was very analytical and calculated - he knows that you cant make progress if youre spinning in circles without aim

1. Stop using yourself as the judge, you are your own worst critic. 2. Everybody has their own pace, it's only natural. 3. Part of learning is trying something new, be uncomfortable. Failing is part of progress.

@@dawson3776 1. Who I am supposed to use as a judge? 2. That's doesn't make it any less painful, when everyone's pace is much better than mine 3. Difference between me and you people is that you try and fail, but eventually your reward is success. Mine is disappointment.

Unfortunately it happens. Some people are just better at picking things while we must pay for courses, mentorships, private tutors whatever. But we must not get discouraged by the Pewdiepie's. It might take longer but we will get there.

why not put your face while the video is playing instead of just the video on its own. Not really watching it together are we
@kasloth9945 күн бұрын
Fair point, though it's possible he wanted to avoid obstructing any of the sketches in the video with his camera. There also could be argument for shrinking the video a little and putting camera view on the side, but it would cause details of the sketches to be somewhat less visible. I'm not disagreeing with you, just saying those could've been the reasons behind the decision

22:58 I call it AI. The shape of some hair doesn't match up. Highlights seem off. There is just more an more detail the longer you look at it that does seem off - not in a style way, but in an AI way. Can I be certain? no

Stop it with this bs. He's still a beginner artists and makes mistakes. He probably also has seen a lot of AI pictures that influence him. This looks clearly like a beginner artist who still doesn't know how to draw a lot of stuff. I think Felix learned a lot in the last year, but there is still so much to improve. He's also way too prideful to just post an AI picture and claim it's his, that's just not who he is.
