Thank you Patrick for this discussion, it is enlightening for sure. Crowley's life and his prolific occult activity often, (and systematically) gets dismissed as satanic; and or a profane form of evil in the Western mindset because he effectively challenged an insidious system of intellectual and spiritual suppression. The very concept that we as individuals are aspects of the divine having a human experience, and that we have the ability to be in control of our own spiritual experiences and cosmic connectivity through will is a highly dangerous thought to the status quo. What gets promoted when it comes to this figure is his seemingly deranged behaviors, and perhaps his narcissistic tendencies; all which provide the necessary fuel to effectively demonize and dismiss his philosophy in the minds of society. It is somewhat true that people tend to fear and demonize what they don't understand or can't comprehend, but I think this is not actually a fact in human behavior; but a concept which has been programmed into our wiring from childhood. I believe if you don't understand something (i.e. a culture, a spiritual practice, etc) don't simply dismiss it and regulate it to the "us and them" paradigm and then work to destroy it, do some research on it. If you find it doesn't work for you then you at least gave it some effort to understand what you didn't understand before. Is that not what the process of enlightenment is all about? Thank you again for this post.
@luisrangel48713 жыл бұрын
You brought up a good point when you mentioned about his narcissistic tendencies. That’s probably one of the best ways to describe why people demonized his ideas and entire life. People do tend to fear the unknown and that’s a fact. Nevertheless, he still brought up a lot of good spiritual and philosophical points that are worth looking into. At least that’s what this guy did over this presentation instead of just judging his actions throughout his whole life like other people tend to do in other videos about him. That doesn’t mean I’m defending him as a person though. I’m sure he had a despicable side of him no doubt but who doesn’t.

None of this shit is risk-free and safe. I consider these "drugs" potential powerful tools for personal growth. But everything is uncertain and there's no guarantee that someone who was previously a veteran in psychedelics won't freak out during their next trip. These are extremely powerful substances that are to be treated with respect. Even with all harm-reduction measures taken, there is still a dice roll. Life itself is filled with these uncertainties, that make it so much more precious. Thank for for sharing your experience. I've yet to try cactus but I have personal experience with Psilocybin and LSD. I would like to remind us all that these things are incredibly personal and that we might have a habit to assume that our experience applies to others, but we might be wrong! I just wanted to mention that because what you experienced might be completely different for someone else, depending on the conditioning, genetics and amalgamation of imprints they experienced which shaped them into who they are currently. I have heard that people who experience mania take precaution with LSD and I can see why from personal experience. Having that sort of energy be amplified by the drug can dig you in a deeper hole than you were in before the trip and over-complicate the recovery process. While psychedelics have potential as healing tools they can also be the catalyst that sends someone to the point of no return through form of a traumatic intense negative trip they weren't ready for. Advocating the use of psychedelics and trying to reform the mental health system through that context is something I consider meaningful and personally significant and would like to do work in that field in the future, but I can't help but feel the urge to remind people that these aren't some magic pill to cure all of your problems, like you say "you don't wanna go there if you know nothing about what you're doing", I agree with that. Exposure to that intensity of direct experience without being prepared can easily just cause new traumas to work through instead of having the effect of working through previous imprints and metaprogramming the psyche in a positive way. Apologies for rambling and going off topic - talking in circles, hope anyone reading this gets something out of it.

Also the poem "Morphia" first published July 1914 in the English Review for a less sanitized and glamourized view of drugs prevailing since 20 years after his death. Furthermore read chapter 21 of the Confessions and other sections of this book. Better still, read the book in its entirety.

Great synopsis. I owe a debt of gratitude to the kids that “poisoned” me with a mescaline containing san pedro extract in the mid 1980’s. The dosing was unbeknownst to myself, at the time I was a straight-edge skateboarder. the event was life changing and probably helped me through depression and self loathing. while I think Mr Crowley’s life has an unfortunate overcast with his disregard and abuse of some of his family and friends, And being a perrenialist with a strong tendency towards Islam I think he was involved with some soul endangering activities that may have created unavoidable consequences for himself and others, I still find him and the setting and his cast of adherents/colleagues a fascinating study for religious and drug research history that deserves fleshing out. perhaps Crowley and his methods were not “divine”……but the cactus undoubtedly is and can confer a person to be both blessed and touched by evil. the presenter/researcher is top notch, and I think an hour long documentary might be too short if more content, archives, documents might expand a view into the subject of Crowleys drug explorations.
