To make this help on conservation more... The psychoactive substance in Peyote is only found in the green, above ground portion of the cactus. If you slice the top part off level with the ground, the root will continue living and will re-sprout not one, but multiple new buttons. If people would do that instead of pulling up and wasting the root portion (as it has no psychoactive properties), it could benefit the plant in the longer term, instead of wiping it out.

It is a pity that cultivating peyote is illegal in so many countries, here in the UK is perfectly legal to have it as ornamental plant, and it is a great cactus for indoor cultivation: I have been growing one for about 5 years now, it is still very small but flowers every year, the blue-green colour is really rare among cacti and the flower are absolutely gorgeous. Very easy to keep, needs watering only every 2 - 4 weeks and its small size makes it ideal for cultivation on windowsills even in the smallest apartments!!! It is definitely one of my favourite plants at home, not to talk about the fact that this cactus doesn't have spines so you can handle very easily!!!

It was used in some cultures. Idk enough about it as its not a part of my native cultures practices, but I think it is a closed practice . Just like Marijuana it was discriminated against and probably just like that plant the people who made it illegal are either racist, ignorant, have 0 self control, or a mix of the 3. @@vangu2918 not sure if it's true (because I haven't done any research) but mainly it's wild caught fugu that is dangerous. The "farm" raised fish aren't fed anything that allows them to produce the dangerous toxin so those are sold more easily because they don't need to be prepared by an expert. They're also cheaper so more easily found at cheaper restaurants.

I believe peyote cacti can be grafted atop San Pedro cacti, which can accelerate the growth rate of the buttons. Plus San Pedro also produce mescaline and associated analogues. Answers the question no one was asking: How can you make a columnar cactus appear even more phallic?

That is true you can graft a lop on a Pedro and it will make it grow really fast but the mescaline in the lop will not have the right amount of mescaline it needs to get you where you need to be, doing that would just make it fast so the plant can grow and give you seeds

I tried it at a "Peyote Way" ceremony on Mt. Lemon. It was a prayer service for healing some local natives. I was a guest of a local. It was an incredible experience. I was raised LDS. I was 19 tripping on medicina. People singing prayer songs. I prayed as I was taught. I felt blessed to participate. I know Natives here in Texas who use it for their religious ceremonies. Respect the Gift.

Those little things grow so slowly, I could never rip one out of the ground and cut it open so casually like the people in the video. Somehow I learned about peyote when I was a kid and of all places, from The X Files. I even had some book from the show that explained the use of the plant and cultural significance in ceremonies.

From what an ol'timer told me, You are supposed to harvest it by slicing it close to the ground leaving the root undisturbed, it will regrow and add new buttons next to it, NEVER pull the root !! Either way, there's always San Pedro and Peruvian Torch, which, while significantly less potent, can be processed rather easily into concentrated extracts, or even pure crystals.

I have a huge "maceta" with a pitahaya cactus, I bought it in a rural market, and years later I noticed 2 peyote buds near the base 😂 Never had any intention of trying them cuz I'd break and damage the plant. And besides I don't want to risk a bad trip.

I think you are confusing peyote/mescaline with other hallucinogens such as LSD. I've never heard of mescaline "bad trips" other than extreme nausea from the Peyote buttons or otherwise taking extremely high doses - something that eating the bitter, nausea producing buttons seems to discourage. I have tried synthetic mescaline twice in my misspent youth (early 1970s) and it was the most mellow, peaceful and beautiful experience of my life.

Sustainable harvesting is done by not damaging the root. Leave green all around the base while removing the button and the base will grow new pups. Please don't harvest in the wild. Grafting to pereskiopsis also speeds things along significantly.

In Canada Peyote was quietly decriminalized in 1996 but I had to buy 6 seeds from Lithuania, which I got one cactus.

You know the stuff grows wild in the U.S. right? It doesn't grow in Lithuania though... You probably could have bought seeds dirt cheap and gotten them sooner. Even before 1996, I don't remember peyote ever being illegal in Canada. Mescaline, the active ingredient in Peyote, was and still is illegal in Canada. Peyote itself is exempt from the law as part of indigenous rights, but mescaline is not. If cops stopped you and found peyote buttons, as soon as it tests positive for mescaline and you're not a Native American, you're effed.
