PF:KM; Teammate "Octavia" UNMODDED Arcane Trickster Build

HI all! Brothermutant here. This is another in a series of vids showcasing how I might level your various allies. I plan to do vids for most (if not all) of your found teammates, both as a MODDED version as well as the UNMODDED variety so that all can get a feel for what I might do with these deadweights... err, I mean, viable and useful allies against evil. UNMODDED Octavia Build STATS: Str 10 Dex 17 Con 8 Int 19 to 24 Wis 10 Cha 14 Chaotic Good (matters for some gear) Class Levels: 1 Rogue/9 Wizard (Transmutation specialist, penalty schools Abjuration and Necromancy)/10 Arcane Trickster In Order of the video: LVL 1 (ROGUE)- Skill Focus - Trickery; Point Blank Shot; Weapon Finesse. SPELL PICKS during level up: ANY Ray spells that do damage; any buff spells you aren't penalized for using (No Abjuration or Necromancy spells) As a WIZARD, she can SCRIBE any wizard scroll she finds to her book, and she should do so (unless another person on the team needs it too). *SKILL points invested by the end of the build: Mobility 4; Trickery 20; Stealth 19; Knowledge Arcana 20; Knowledge World 19; Perception 20; Persuasion 1; UMD 20

@@quickpawmaud I sure did (some better than others I am afraid). I even did builds using mods... Call of the Wild actually changes many starting teammates' build. For example, Harrim is no longer a Cleric and Valerie is no longer just a Tower Shield Specialist. Harrim became a War Priest that has mastered punching things, and Val was a new class as well, a Vindictive Bastard who is a former Paladin who cares more about herself and her allies. Check them out some time and let me know what you like or change, yes?

My guide is for the vanilla game since the respec mod wasn’t working for me and someone mentioned there wasn’t really any guides for console that weren’t super min max multiclass. So I am trying to make builds 1-20 in their starting class with the exception of Octavia because she is so obviously supposed to be Arcane Trickster.

@@quickpawmaud Then I got builds for all of them. Some are kinda obvious (i.e. boring) like Unmodded Tristian's build which capitalizes on his AoE healing of the team. Just grab more Extra Channels. I like what I did with Regongar and Linzi the most, I think, as I am more likely to play characters like them. Check them out and get back to me on what you would change?

@@brothermutant7370 well it is not obvious to a lot of people. I don’t know most of the classes. I can make Fighters, Barbarians, and Paladins but that is about it.

Getting archery feats and spells for Octavia is rather pointless as her BAB is terrible for an archer and shouldn't be used as such. Her point is to sneak attack with ranged touch attack spells and that's where her focus should be. I wouldn't use her as a buffer either as you really need all your spell slots for damage spells to actually deal damage with her as she's basically an archer that needs to burn a spell each round she attacks and with Rogue's skill utility(well almost but good enough for the most part). This makes her starting transmutation school mastery not nearly as punishing as you shouldn't really care about necromancy nor abjuration spells with her, leave those for an arcane buffer like say her boyfriend Regongar who is perfect for that role. I mean sure, you're not really going to get much mileage out of the transmutation mastery but at least it's not hampering you that much if you build her properly.

i have no access to battering blast lvl3. im lvl 9, just checked again during lvl up process. i was wondering why there are so few ray spells. and what the hack, why are there no spell-types in pathfinders description of spells :D like for example: fireball - projectile, aoe / battering blast - ray. overall i find the tooltips pretty weak compared to pillars of eternity for example.

I started this game blind and was annoyed when I got Octavia because I was literally making Linzi her exact archetype and it basically made one of my followers obsolete.

@@brothermutant7370 Just started playing a few weeks ago and I'm blown away by how good it is. I never played it before because of the bad reviews. I'mguessing a lot of that was bugs. I'm enjoying this at least as much as DOS1, probably more. Allowing you to control a kingdom adds a dimension that no other DnD like video game has ever had, to my knowledge.

@@MerkinMuffly Nothing like it, to me anyway. Big fan of the game (obviously) and hope to do more vids for the upcoming game. I just wish they had added more spells to the new game, as it sounds like they are all the same spells we get in this one. Oh well, at least they will be familiar, right?

Thank you for the video. interesting take on spell choices, you need however to take into account what you give to Linzi and any other spellcaster you regularly group. In this case I normally take Heroism with Linzi, and spam it to cover the party, but there is little point in taking both Linzi and Octavia on a mission as they cover each other a lot and you only need one multi-skill character at any one time. Thankfully Octavia's spell choice is not so important as you can normally buy any spell she needs, and if you cannot you still get more spells than you have slots and are not hard done by for choice. More though must be taken on her feats though, and it is here that the guide falls down. Armour is not important for Octavia, at any level, because you cannot get enough AC to be viable as a defence. Moderate AC only saves you against low rolled attacks, with AC you need a lot or dont bother. Octavia cannot realistically get there, she needs concealment to survive not AC. So I would not buy here any armour feats. Secondly I would not buy here any missile feats past precise shot. I use a bow sometimes with Octavia when I have run out of spells, but its the sneak attacks that make the difference not the bow., here BAB is generally bad as Arcane Tricksters get two +0 levels compared to a wizards one, and have to waste an extra level up that doesn't result in a future +1 BAB at level 3. So the Arcane Trickster is de-facto -2BAB compared to a straight wizard at level 10 Arcane Trickster. That is bad, even if you have good Dex. So the long and the short of it is, Octavia is better off hitting touch AC which her cantrips does rather than actual AC, even if the target is flat footed. This is mitigated when you find an accurate bow, but the base cantrips do either ice or acid damage which are often superior to the mundane bow damage. I would not buy any bow talents. Instead Octavia needs weapon focus ray or touch attack, and spell foci and spell penetration feats to make the spells land. The kicker is Improved Critical (Ray) which you will need to wait until you get +8BAB which is a long time coming for an Arcane Trickster, but when you can get it the improved threat range for your ray spells makes a massive difference.

Loving your stuff man. I've been trying a lot of channels that cover PF and they're either far too basic or skim over things with the assumption everyone already knows the game. Loving your channel my guy. You are the most knowledgeable pathfinder player I have found on youtube! Any chance you could show how you would respec octavia, valerie and amiri so they aren't garbage but remain true to thier character identity? "respecilization" is the only mod I use.

What does the respec mod do that the Pathfinder woman can't? Do they keep their stats but allow you to make one at level 1 all over, like I could make Linzi a sorcerer at level 1? I never used that mod before so I don't know. Tell me down below. Hmmm, what would each of them be? Linzi would stay the Bard that's for sure. I would probably make Val a generic Fighter as she doesn't like being a Paladin, and Octavia is fine the way she is. MAYBE I would have made her an Eldritch Scoundrel/Arcane Trickster toon instead of 1 Rogue/9 Wizard/10 Arcane Trickster as I don't usually like high caster builds (wizards/sorcs/druids/clerics get WAY too OP by the end of the game).

What does use magic device? Abs what’s your party makeup

Use Magic Device is a Skill that uses your Charisma stat. It allows you to cast spells from Scrolls and Wands that are NOT spells you could normally cast. So, if you are a wizard, ANY scroll or wand that has a wizard spell would be used by your wizard WITHOUT a UMD skill check. If the spell was only for a CLERIC, then you would roll a UMD check which is 20+the level of the spell (1 through 9). You would roll a 1d20 and ADD your UMD skill bonus to it to try to pass the 20+spell Level. Its why I USUALLY shoot for an UMD of around 20 by the end of the build. Party is (usually): Front line- Magus (me), Amiri or Valerie or Regongar. Then Ranged attackers- Tristian, Octavia, Ekun. Those work well together but I can easily grab Linzi or Jubilost for the ranged attackers.

This build looks AND IS quite strong/powerful (dependent upon some gear choices) but again, like with Linzi, equip Octavia with WHIMSY shortbow on top of her already pretty devastating ranged damage spell capabilities and this Octavia build becomes HILARIOUSLY fun to wreck stuff with! The CC chance ability of Hideous Laughter can NOT go underestimated cause it goes off, a lot, in my experiences (basically turning your target into a free kill...for the entire party to boot). And No, as you kind of already somewhat mentioned, the entity at Oleg's Trading Post can only respec your MC (3 times free) and no other character or companions. Respec mod is your only choice if you want to respec companions (or MC for that matter).

I heard you could get them to respec ANY teammate down to their "starting point" with you, so Octavia and REG HAVE to be level 2 before you pick them up as she is wiz1/rog1 and Reg is a level 2 Magus so he can use his class' main ability. Guess I heard wrong. And you ARE correct about Whimsy. That thing goes off ALL the time. Makes many fights trivial, and you can get that reasonably early correct? My fav tactic is to rush getting one of those Arcane Protector daggers (game has two iirc). That dagger makes WHOEVER holds it IMMUNE to the Nausea condition. Use that with a solo run AND use Stinking Cloud and you can roll stomp MOST fights easily. AFTER you get INVIS and the Heart of Ira (think I spelled that right), you can CHEESE most fights by just being invisible AND activating that AoE aura. SUPER cheese to the max.

Actually you can re-spec your companions with him as well, it's just that you can only get them to what they initially started with so you can only undo your own leveling decisions not fix the bad choices these companions start with. Whether this sort of re-spec is worthy of being called a re-spec is up to you, technically it is but functionally not really, so I guess you're half right. So yeah the re-spec mod just allows you to get your companions tabula rasa, without the predetermined bad choices which actually makes them all perfectly viable to play with instead of mercs for the flavor.
