Pflugerville Displaced Left Intersection at 685 (Dessau Rd) and E Pecan St

Pflugerville finished a new $4.3M road intersection with a displaced left turn in December 2021. It is located at Pecan and 685. While a very efficient design for moving traffic, it causes much confusion, as people are used to the old ways.
When making any turn from 685, make sure you turn into the center lane. Note that when making a right on 685, you should not turn into the right two lanes. You must turn into the center lane. Same with making a left on 685. We need to turn into the center lane, not go to the far right two lanes.
When making turns on Pecan, make sure you follow the signs and enter the designated lane for left-turns, right-turns, and going straight.

This is truly an unfortunate design-needlessly complicated. Local drivers will eventually figure it out, but I feel sorry for visitors and other first-time users. As for my family, we plan to avoid the intersection if we can. Having said that, I appreciate those who worked on the redesign; I know they had the best of intentions. Ideas sometimes work better on paper than in reality.

Hey guys, I know this intersection is atrocious but we’ll figure it out! At least no more waiting on that damn skinny bridge for ages? If you’re wondering WHY?!?!?? This design allows for people going east and west on pecan to cross straight, turn right, or turn left at the SAME TIME instead of left turners waiting for through traffic or vice versa, it’s a shame there eras y any media coverage or mailers explaining the change before hand, but in the long run, this should alleviate traffic and shorten your commute! Plus it makes large vehicle maneuvers safer. We’ll see soon if accidents improve or worsen but I’m glad at least that the city is trying to implement new solutions to problems.

There is a similar intersection in Cedar Park that includes separate right turn lanes that merge back beyond where the displaced left-turn lanes start. This modification to the design actually makes it safer by not needing drivers to make right turns into center lanes. Wonder why the intersection in Pflugerville was not done this way?

There is a creek close by and a bridge that makes it difficult or cost prohibative to add a dedicated right lane. It is hard to believe they could not do with a +$4M budget, but that was the reason given.
