Thank you for the video! Been trying to find videos on using multiple different dyes or stains on turned pieces, and your technique here is quite helpful. I have a slightly different goal in mind, but I think the techniques here will still work for my needs. Regarding your tenons. I went back to the beginning of the video, and I think I know why you have the wobble after you flip the bowl around. It appears as though your tenon was not actually true. You can see in the video that the tenon itself exhibits the characteristic of being out of round (one side ha smore material than the other). The effect in the tenon, given its smaller radius, is smaller than the effect on the outer edge of the bowl once you flip. For a tenon to work well, it MUST be absolutely TRUE before you flip. I personally prefer a tenon to a morise, as you don't have that problem of having to have an extra thick base in your bowls, and there is a bit of "magic" for the end user of the piece in wondering how it was made (i.e. how it was attached! ;)) I think tenons are plenty capable of allowing very true turning once flipped...but, the tenon itself must also be totally true, and in your case I think a lack of that is why you ended up having the problems once you flipped to turn the inside.

Fantastic tutorial Peggy, Interesting thought on tenons and not quite even when turning inside compared to mortise. I definitely will try this on pale wood, I have some brown laurel (Australian native), very pale timber with only a little grain definition. I’m hoping that grain will be more pronounced after dye. I want to use only food safe dyes though. So I’ll need to research what I can get in Australia. Thanks from downunder in Oz

Hey there…thanks for posting so many of your projects. I do want to ask about your choice of screws in fastening down your face plate. I really think you MIGHT want to switch to fully threaded proper wood screws with a fully threaded shaft. Half of the length of the screws that you use don’t have thread (not recommended). So maybe you can explain why you use the type you use. Not a dig, just wondering how you decided to use these instead of fully threaded screws. Thanks.. keep on turning.

I have also had a problem balancing the bowls on a tenon , but mostly when i use a worm screw. I stabilised the worm screw in the chuck jaws by turning a disc to go onto the screw and fit exactly between the jaws. This improved it a bit, but not completely. I found that when i put spur drives that had a good point in both head and tail stock, they did not meet exactly point to point. I adjusted the headstock and it appears to have made a significant difference. I really cant explain why it mattered so much but it did. Maybe someone can enlighten me?

Have you figured out a correct speed for sanding that the piece doesn't get so hot? I have tried and still have to walk away for everything to cool down. Also found out it takes hours of hard work to get the perfection you get. There's no easy way.
@PFWoodturning

You’re right, no easy way at all. As far as sanding speed, it can vary, but I’d say around 150 average.

Maybe your tenon’s aren’t working because you don’t have a flat shoulder for the chuck jaws to sit on. Just a thought. I also can’t tell if your tenon is sitting at the base of the jaws or not. It shouldn’t touch the base but I can’t see your chuck.

Love your dye work. Mine never look that good! A good tenon has a flat face on the bottom of the piece and a crisp corner to the foot and your tenon needs to fit your jaws either flat or dove tail. And don’t sand them.

Another BEAUTIFUL BOWL!!!!!! I was looking to see if I could find a reason why you have problems with tenons when you turn the bowl around and I see 2 issues in this video. The first one may be from the angle of the camera but from what I see at time mark 9:35 there is a wider gap on the right side from the face of the jaws to the bowl then on the left side and at time mark 9:37 this gap is even BUT there shouldn't be ANY gap. The face of the jaws should be tight against the bottom of the bowl, this tells me that your tenon is to long and is bottoming out. The second issue is when you reverse the bowl on the longworth chuck look at the tenon and you will see that the corners of the jaws are gripping the tenon and not the dovetail, this tells me that the angle of the dovetail is not cut at the proper angle
