Honestly might be one of the finest looking instruments I've ever seen.

Wow the best sounding rickenbacker ever heard, great tone and playing!

Wow, this is the best sort of "raw showcase" of one of these I've seen! Beautiful bass, and what an interesting sounding thing! Like you say, 4001 (maple neck through, 33 1/4 scale, THAT floating tailpiece) meets Jazz (pickup location), but the really defining feature for me is what the ebony fingerboard brings to the party. That sproingy, snappy growl -- the way it does fret noise... it's more growley than rosewood, not as tizzy as maple -- both of which have their features as well. Super cool, thanks for sharing!

so many cool basses that rickenbacker made over the years and discontinued. wish they'd bring them all back, especially the 4005!

Sounds fucking amazing! I love the jazz bass sound and I love the classic Rickenbacker sound--it's the perfect synthesis of the two.

yes it is...pickup placement perhaps a lot to do with it

Ricks are in a league of their own. Love them though and glad you are championing them after all these years. Met you at Godzillas in 82 when The Damned did 3 nights there. Dave told me on the 2nd night you guys ran out of money on the tour. Glad you made it home 😅
@paulgraybass Жыл бұрын
I;'ve always championed them and I remember Godzillas well for numerous reasons best not gone into here...!

Best video done on a Rickenbacker 4002 ever. Clearly showing how that bass sounds and it sounds excellent. Much better than a 4003!
@paulgraybass Жыл бұрын
lol cheers...yes I've yet to find a 4003 I'm happy with without a fair amount of customising

Thanks Paul for sharing this clip. Really versatile tone choices there, rare beast indeed ... seems that Ibanez had a good look at that circuit as well, but the Rickenbacker 4002 is definitely more user friendly /ergonomic regarding the controls etc. 10/10.Very nice instrument👍

cheers! Completely unfamiliar w/ Ibanez.

Absolutely gorgeous bass! Such a great sound too! Never seen one with a direct output for recording before, how fascinating. Thank you so much for posting a video, they’re always a delight to watch! I also wanted to thank you again for an excellent show at the Stone Pony back in October! (I like your sweatshirt by the way) It was lovely speaking with you and I’m honored that I was able to play the beautiful Darkadelic Rickenbacker. It's an experience I will cherish forever and I can’t thank you enough. I hope you had a lovely Christmas! And I hope you have a great new year! Best wishes to you and the rest of the Damned!

You are looking well Paul! Beautiful bass. Years ago I had a 72 4001 black with white pin stripe. Fell on hard times and had to sell. Best to you and The Damned!

cheers Christopher! That 72' would be worth a few bob these days, lovely.

i'm late to the party in mentioning the entwistle tone bahaha, very reminiscent of his "too late the hero" era. sounds incredible paul! but of course it would being played by you. always good to see your face with a bit of bass :~)

Incredible find Paul, weird tone controls, but a really thick sound, as you said a mix of a Jazz and a Ric. 👍🤘

I think they might have been a 'work in progress" as far as electrics go but yes incredible sound.

@@paulgraybass well it's another instrument in your very impressive arsenal, do you see it as a live or recording beast Paul? Or is it one if those 'must have as it will inspire' type basses?
@robinebneth1946 Жыл бұрын
It is time to build those again. Well I will start building this one as a left hand soon.

Looks and sounds great! Like you said, a bit Ric and Jazz Bass vibe. Very cool. Weird tone controls, almost sound like it turns them down as well as roll-off treble. Thanks for the vid.

I couldn't quite put my finger on what the tone reminded me of with both pickups on, but then it hit me: it sounds uncannily similar to a Wal Mk 1 to my ears. Great find anyway and merry crimbo Paul!

Reminds me of the Jolana D-Bass - a communist era bass made in Czechoslovakia. It had a Rickenbacker shape, with neck through construction, and "P/J" style pickups. I've owned two, and they were also in "tobacco burst" (or "turd burst" as a friend described it). Sounded great, and I really regret selling the better condition of the two.
@paulgraybass Жыл бұрын
turdburst, that's brilliant!

Do stick to the same string gauge or does it depend on the bass itself?

I have a 78 4002 and am wondering what you paid for yours? I have owned mine since 1989.
