The "incremental improvement" line is my favorite. People always get caught up trying to get perfect instantly, and they never do, so they quit trying. But ingraining the mindset that you only need to kick yesterday's ass tomorrow is huge in pacing yourself and ensuring you stay motivated.

This is my take on it. I was active duty Infantry at Ft Stewart GA. We were told hands or thumbs in pockets were a no go because it made you look unprofessional. You don't get more more professional than the units that Pat worked for. If Pat does it, don't tell me it ain't professional.

Very fundamental stuff with learning at least with coordination and timing of movements and patterns is that you pick up and learn more if you watch a novice demonstrating a movement rather than an expert performing it flawlessly over and over again. I liked this.

I enlisted at 27 and was grossly out of shape. 2nd PT test in BCT I’ll never forget, the Drill Sergeant says “You doubled your score since last time and you still fucking failed. Way to go, Private.” Hahaha he may not have been impressed, but I was feeling great about it.

I suppose the best way is to never be satisfied with yesterday's success. SEALs say the only easy day was yesterday, not sure what the Rangers use, but no doubt effective. But always tweaking your skills and maintaining your strength at peak will keep you ready for what the world has to threaten you with.

I like instructors like this and strive to instruct my department in the same fashion (although without even a 1/16 of the experience that Mr. McNamara has). I see no bullshit about there being only one way to do things, just the goal to get things done efficiently and to be alive at the end, even when everything goes to shit. I hope to take the opportunity to attend a class.
