The "incremental improvement" line is my favorite. People always get caught up trying to get perfect instantly, and they never do, so they quit trying. But ingraining the mindset that you only need to kick yesterday's ass tomorrow is huge in pacing yourself and ensuring you stay motivated.

I suppose the best way is to never be satisfied with yesterday's success. SEALs say the only easy day was yesterday, not sure what the Rangers use, but no doubt effective. I like instructors like this and strive to instruct my department in the same fashion (although without even a 1/16 of the experience that Mr. McNamara has).
