This is different than what Commissioner Jay said. He stated, ‘this partnership has nothing to do with LIV’. It’s a partnership between PGA, DPTour and PIF… The PIF can invest where they want. @@pjpredhomme7699 if I was the pga tour I would keep liv and make it a pure team format. Have maybe 3 liv events per year but really revolutionize it. Maybe have teams sponsored by equipment companies. I think it would grow golf if we add more formats then the normal 72 hole stroke play. Tbh I would keep the 54 hole format maybe even the shotgun start. Would give a chance for the tour to really create a new atmosphere. But the main thing is it needs to be real competition, not exhibition like it is currently. Would be a way for them to play unique courses as well. Maybe not the prototypical PGA tour course.

No way they penalize LIV golfers for returning. No way they compensate (in any meaningful way) any PGA players (unless they cherry pick some of their favorites and make it seem even more unfair). They cannot allow PIF/PGA entity to profit from their likeness, entertainment value or worth without fair compensation.

The PR hit has been taken, so the details will be worked out and likely tweaked over some time. PIF has to be ecstatic - they are firmly ensconced at the top table in golf which they will use for further leapfrogging into other sports. The PIF has to view this as the door being kicked open for North American sports involvement. I love the spin she puts on it that the PIF investment is a PGA victory. PIF effectively bought out the PGA because there is no way significant decisions aren't collaborative within the Saudis' long-term strategy. Foolish to think otherwise or presume that PIF leadership is ignorant. They are not.

Especially considering Monahan is a bad commissioner and this pif man looks like a boss. I get Dunn was involved but still. The obvious reason is LIV, to this point, is a failed venture. How long can you subsidize billions until u know to cut bait. The Saudi’s are playing the long game, what they want is the clout and reach of the PGA, LIV can’t give them that so they’ll buy it or in this case “invest” as a passive partner. They bought a premier league team and Formula 1, won’t be long until other sports in US are in the fold. Could you imagine if they bought the Cowboys or Lakers?
@Matt-cr4vv
@Matt-cr4vv Жыл бұрын
Because of the motivation of the PIF to be involved with golf to begin with. Their goal isn’t making money or even the game itself. Their goal is the exposure that comes with being involved in the established brand. People keep glossing over the fact that to this point LIV as a league hasn’t had any luck landing substantial partners or exposure in the media market. LIV has obtained one corporate sponsor to this point and a crap TV deal that’s a revenue share and has been doing awful ratings. So do you continue to dump in money and hope corporate sponsors and media entities change their mind to partner up or do you align with the top league in the sport who has all of those things and skate off what is already built? If LIV had been landing corporate sponsors and strong media deals or were at least trending that way to show a positive outlook of those things they probably stick with LIV. But that hasn’t been the case at all and some of their top players have been losing their sponsors. But in the end the deal probably doesn’t even go through. There are so many hurdles in the way for it to happen that I’d be surprised if it actually goes through in the end.

“Penalties to return to the PGA Tour would be significant.” Since the new organization would now include all three tours, forcing players to “pay to play” sounds like an anti-trust issue. @@spencer2365 That's not necessarily true. Any start-up needs at least 3 years before you can reasonably expect to turn a profit and, if LIV were to continue on it's own, would have more changes forthcoming to build it's customer base. And McKinsey has reportedly built a 10 year plan, so it's way too early to evaluate the long term viability of LIV. But that has changed now, given LIV's immediate access (assuming the deal goes through) to the media base of the PGA with which to leverage and build. It's obvious that if he PGA were to continue on it's own, it was on a path to extinction financially and PIF was playing the long game. It was the PGAT that reached out to PIF, not the other way around.

The more clarity they provide the more obvious this is a clear and blatant violation of antitrust laws. I disagree that the antitrust lawsuit "failed". The Saudis wanted to invest heavily in men's professional golf and ultimately dominate and essentially own the rights to golf world-wide. Well, it appears they now do. The lawsuit was the lever to get what they wanted.

Seemingly the PGA Tour is NOT the dominant controlling actor. Seemingly PIF are not going to throw away LIV Golf, it's possibly their insurance should the merger fail. In terms of winning the battle, the PGA Tour seems to have betrayed the victims of 9/11, unforgivable.
@tod3msn

The reality is in golf two leagues is bad for the sport. You want everyone competing at each tournament instead of some guys in LIV and some at PGA. Because golf is an individual sport of greatness and golf fans are passionate for the best players competing with each other regularly. Beyond that we live in a small world that is shrinking regularly. Maybe, just maybe, having LIV part of PGA will make for a better world because powerful forces are now more and more part of the mix. We got to talk to each other whether we like it or not. I understand some people feel strongly against LIV but the more powerful notion is to bring all parties into the fold. I endorse the merger.

Trust. I trust no entity where there is big money involved. The biggest of the world problems stem from greed. Greed meaning wanting more and more and never being satisfied. Golf started as a game where ethics was a big part. The ethics of the Professional game these days seem to stop at the handshakes at the first tee and the last green. It’s all gone Pete Tong.

Jamal Khashoggi would have had little reason to fear as he sat down in a guest chair opposite the desk of Mohammed al-Otaibi, the consul general who had personally called him and invited him back to the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul to finalize his papers that would enable him to marry his fiance. Not long after Khashoggi entered the consul’s office, two men came into the room and dragged him away. Unbeknown to the Saudis, Turkish intelligence officials from the national spy agency, MIT, were listening in. Khashoggi was killed during seven horrific minutes in which he was first tortured, then mutilated, injected with a sedative, and finally dismembered. After days of denial, Saudi Arabia finally said that Khashoggi died in a "fistfight" at its Istanbul consulate. PGA players and fans have little reason to fear the Saudis as they torture, mutilate, and dismember the tour as they did Jamal Khashoggi.

Literally nobody cared about LIV and watched. I had totally forgotten about the players that left. It's more than likely Jay didn't want to open the books in court and lose the scammy 501c status for PGA. The dramatic increase in spending from legal fees and having to pay more to players was too fast for old crusty Jay and the PGA to figure out how to generate the money needed to keep their pockets fat. Jay snaked his players to protect himself and PGA benefactors.

You can spin this any way you want and it still smells bad. The fans don't matter and the players don't matter so what does? Obviously the money is of more value than anything and the Saudis have plenty to throw towards the greedy. You can say 9/11 doesn't matter, but it does and that is one reason any deal with Saudi Arabia stinks . The other is the journalist that they killed and dismembered and have never punished for which leaves a bitter taste in people's mouths still. It is all about greed and power. It is not about golf at all or giving other countries that don't have it a place in the mix. It is not about the love of golf, but the love of money. And, total disloyalty and disrespect to the players and the fans.
