I pulled six PGX 9.8 graded comic books from my PC, and sent them to CGC under their crossover grading. Crossover grading allows you to send another company's slabbed comic book to CGC, they will remove it from the holder, and regrade and encapsulate the book. Now we see, which if any kept their 9.8 grade.

Given they are handling the books and pulling them out of the inner well, I think the CGC quick press is warranted. Even though I was not trying to validate PGX grading, the books had all be pressed before PGX got them, so it is somewhat fair to have them pressed before CGC graded them.

I would’ve cracked the PGX slabs myself. That way CGC isn’t aware of what their comp graded it.

I know some people have this thought, but if CGC's process is what they say it is, then that information is lost once the book is checked in. The book is supposed to be removed from any identifying features other than the batch number. The book then went to their CCS pressing, then to the grading room. In theory, there should be no outside influence.

I’m glad for you that you were able to get some 9.8 spec on their crossover. I sent in some CBCS books to CGC on that crossover and CGC screwed me on all of them so I would rather have spiders lay legs in my ear than sending anything more for the crossover, I crack and press everything and just send it raw.

Great result for all really Rob. While there was no commentary (apart from cgc being more saleable, which I don't think was ever in question) them all turning over the same grade is a good result for PGX. And the idea of crossover is great. Didn't even know that was a thing.

Neither was I, that ASM 361 with the production tear had me expecting a 9.4 from CGC, but instead they saw it the same as PGX, a common production error only excluding it from 9.9 contention. It was easily the most interesting revelation from the lot.

They used to advertise the discount, but they have hinted in the past about doing away with crossover grading. So I guess its a few dollars, mostly the pressing is discounted.

Great books. I been collecting for over 15 years now and got 5 short boxes of keys,low print runs,rare variants and cool covers and I am saving up to get my last few books TMNT#1, Planet Comics#1, Detective Comics#168, X-Men#1 1963 and Batman#1 1940 then I am done collecting unless I find keys at a yard sale cheap.

I do have a video planned down the road where I will be sending six PGX 9.9 and 10s to CGC for crossover grading. Now that CGC is actively looking for 9.9s and 10s there is a better chance, but you are right, I would not expect grade retention. The only reason I will risk it, is even as a CGC 9.8 the book would likely sell easier and for the same or more money, if I ever choose to move it. Not saying that is fair, its just what is. CGC is not doing Signature Authentication yet, they will soon, but as of my response, it is still in the works. Even with CGC now looking for 9.9s and 10s, there is still a good chance that your PGX 10 would not retain that Gem Mint grade, and that has nothing to do with PGX's grading and everything to do with the handling that would be involved during the crack and regrade process. I do have a couple more of these videos planned, and one of the future videos will be a submission of PGX 9.9s and 10s to CGC to see if any of them retain their grade.

I agree, if my intent had been to make a validation of PGX grading. As it was, the intent here was to simply move the books over, I made to attestation one way or another, only that these books were graded the same. Pressing the books though with CGC you are getting just a quick press, and given the books were handled by them removing the books from the slabs and inner well, I think not pressing them, when the books had been pressed before PGX grading wouldn't be fair either. Ultimately this is, especially given the sample size, an fun experiment, but there is no controlled data to make actual judgements on. Having said that, I am sending another batch in, but those books will be silver-age mid-grade slabs, that will be more interesting. Cheers.

That's excellent. But I'm in the opinion that the only way you are going to get a 9.9 or 10 grade is to carefully take a issue immediately off the printing press before anyone else touches it. By the time it leaves the printing pile, gets boxed, shipped, taken out of the box and put on the rack it's instantly a 9.8. Their push for 9.9's is just a marketing ploy.

I doubt there is going to be a surge of 9.9's like everyone is going hysteria baiting over. Obviously as each year goes by, there is less and less books and especially keys to grade. So, what a better way to get people to CPR 9.8's and roll the dice. But I seriously doubt they will be handling them out like hot cakes! But the community is going nuts all over this new 9.9 is the future and blah blah blah...not gonna happen...CGC has too keep making money, so they know that books are drying up to grade, so they have become in the business of creating collectibles rather than grading collectibles, the constant signature events show case this, and now a another reason to CPR with a chance of winning the lottery with a 9.9 or 10

I can't remember whether you've given an opinion before, just wondering why you didn't get custom labels for the Spidey books, being you've gone through the expense of swapping them over? I know you have 100's of slabs, and may not want to go down that expensive rabbit hole if most are not custom?

While I do like the look of the labels, I don't like the price. At $5.00 its a 20% price increase on grading costs of a modern book. Additionally, with a submission like this, unless they are all getting custom labels, you end up paying a second submission fee and a second set of return shipping fees as they split the order based on standard label or custom label. This can really add to the cost.

I am unfamiliar with that company, though looking at their website it seems they are a raw grading service only. The biggest concern I have in looking at their FAQs is they state they use a grading system similar to OverStreet, but it deviates from it. That is of course similar to CGC, and like CGC they do not go into details. The lack of transparency could be an issue. It may be something to check out for a future video. Thanks for the heads up.

Probably as much as you can trust any company with your property. There are good and bad stories of every grading company. I have had mostly good, and when there was an issue, it was minor and it was corrected to my satisfaction.

There is an argument for what you say, though my experience is that there is a huge difference when it comes to selling the book. CGC books get the looks.

Maybe. I never make a that statement nor do I knock PGX. I stated their grading systems are different, and this is a small sample size. I do have some more experiments lined up, but at the end of the day, they are two different companies with two different grading systems, that just happen to both use a similar grading scale.

As a comic book collector since 1976, I find slabbing/grading comics is a complete waist of money. I understand how things are graded but again, it's an arbitraty grade. I've seen comic books given high grades by CGC yet they were written on inside. Sports cards started this stupid trend and then Comic Books followed, It's just a company telling you what they think the grade is. If you were nervous about your books coming back with lower grades then that tells you right there the grade is arbitraty. Besides, who's going to want to unslab all their books and have them reslabbed every 7-10 years. You've literally trapped your book with the gasses it's expelling insice plastic. I know there are sheets in there to absorb the gas but after about 7 years that paper is done. For collectors who just slab and forget, I'm sorry that they are potentially ruining their comic books.
