I think Classic Cars, Comics, Cards, Vinyls, houses, land, guitars, and most of everything will drop. I keep telling people to just enjoy the hobby. I recommend everyone have the hobby funded by the hobby rather than using their 9-5 job. I started with a baseline of $10k collection and basically over the years tripled the worth of my collection with Bigger Golden Age books and some silver age keys,

I totally agree that much more than comics are set to drop. I also agree with getting the hobby to fund itself...that way, even if everything goes to zero, you haven't really put yourself in a terrible financial situation.

I don't think land is going down anytime soon, but even land will have more available inventory once boomers start to pass, so I do think there will be a housing correction at some point. On the flip side, I could be wrong, because land is one thing that we are not making more of! (unless Elon gets us to Mars, lol)

In 20 years, AI will most likely take over CGC, all the gradings will be done by robots. There will be minimal mishandling of the books and the grading will eliminate all human errors. We will finally get to see which books are truly 9.9 and the "let's just give them a 9.8 cause 9.9 is rare" mentality will be a thing in the past.

@@RobinApplewood Probably wouldn’t be right away but perhaps over years as hardcore collectors, new collectors and speculators may want to snatch up physical copies. If all goes digital maybe a bunch of stores go out of business. Who knows how many would have the means to keep all their inventory a lot may get trashed. Family of those who pass on may not want to keep books and trash them as well. Of course maybe the stores will do big fire sales to move inventory and cause a spec bubble to burst like in the 90s. 🤷🏼‍♂️. Could be totally wrong as well lol.

You have a sound argument but what you're saying is comic book collecting is no longer a kid's game but has shifted to adults with disposable income. That may be the case but kind of sad considering kids are the original demographics that comics were designed for. Good thing that you're passing your love of comic books to your kids! Another factor to consider regarding disposable income is the future cost of sending one's kids to college. Tuition was exponentially higher when my daughter went compared to me so just imagine how much higher they will be. I paid off my mortgage in 2008 but had to wait until 2012 when my daughter graduated from college to get disposable income.

Great video. Never linked the two before. That’s my struggle right now. I have over 15 k books and only 80 graded. Do I grade them to make it easier when I’m gone? My kids love mostly stray dogs, siktc, and they just read feral. But I will say that they watched new X-men cartoon and now want to read my X-men 97 I just picked up

If you can't bother to sell them while you're living, imagine what a burden it will be for your kids who don't care about them, graded or not. You risk them being tossed or at best given away for pennies on the dollar. Sell them and leave them a good amount of money from them, rather than little or nothing.

Thanks! And, great question. Personally, I've got my collection in 3 sections: slabs for the most valuable, a few short boxes of $25ish and up keys and then boxes of everything below that. If I live long enough, then I'll plan to sell all but my most valuable/sentimental comics, but then leave those few (top 100ish?) behind to the kids. If I pass more quickly than I expect (accident, sudden sickness, etc.), then I'm teaching my family how to sell on ebay, so that they can sell the more valuable books there (which would be worth their time). Then, I've told them that they can just take the rest of the boxes to the local lcs and get what they can (unless one of them enjoys reselling and would be willing to take the time to sell them on ebay to maximize their profit). That's cool that your kids love the comics you mentioned plus the X-Men cartoon. I've been working through the original cartoon with my kids and will eventually watch the new one once we're done with that one. Thanks for watching!

True...but the question is what will the population be going forward? Pretty much all economies that are currently strong enough to support the collectibles market are not reproducing at replacement level. @@wahoocomicsI would imagine that people from different cultures buy comic books. They have gone mainstream since hitting the big screen also, so there's world wide appeal. If you go to a comic con you would see that there is a lot diversity there. Look up the NYCC youtube videos of the walk throughs and look who is in the crowd.

What happens to comics in wildfires, flooding, and earthquakes? The total supply only decreases, it never increases, while increasing temperatures cause increase oxidation and deterioration. It is easy to look at a single variable but there are so many more to consider...

Great Video Man!! I have started labeling my books with title, issue number, Volume, year, the significance of the book and what grade I believe it to be. The goal with this is if something was to happen to me those books can easily be sorted. Also, which ever family member has a better idea of what may have value. My oldest has zero cares about comics. My middle seems to be growing into the nintendo or transformer comics. Something I am not well versed in but glad he is adventuring into something. My third isn't of grade school age yet. However, Wonder Woman is already her favorite character and she enjoys books in general. So, she's really my last hope LOL. Also, she actually sat and watched a X-Men movie with me the other evening. Blew my mind cause she doesn't sit still LOL

Awesome video! I'm 58 years old, two sons in their early 30's, and I've found it to be a very lonely hobby. I don't really have time to go to conventions, I don't have a good high-end LCS nearby, and I don't have any friends that collect the books I like, the way I like, and in the grades I like. I still treasure my comic collection of about 5,000 books, with the big "stars" being key Marvel books from the 1980-1985 era. I've sent off the keys to CGC, and I have about 400 slabs. But I don't know, no one seems to appreciate the thousands of hours I've spent curating my collection. Anyway, I love your videos, as well as those from Regie Collects Comics. Thanks for being a new influencer -- I know creating this content takes a lot of time.

Because I have so many kids, I also don't have time to go to conventions or even an LCS regularly, so the hobby has also been a lonely one for me for most of my collecting journey. I like to gauge the pop culture collectibles by how the Cons are doing across the country, people spend thousands there each, and seeing how busy each one is helps tell you the healthiness of these Hobby's. I may be wrong but this is my opinion.

I think the hobby itself will last, but the number of buyers is going to shrink. Same thing with classic cars, cards, vinyl records, pulps, homes, land, and basically anything related to the older generation.

I agree with the broad strokes of the demographic analysis but think the impact on values is still hard to predict. It would take only 50 "whales" from the art market to switch to comic collecting to keep values moving up. The amount people are willing to spend is inherently elastic.

People if they are collecting for profit need to think about all this, it's a fun topic, some of which you can look at past history. Forgetting quantity of humans in the future since I think there will be plenty and I think the collecting base continues to expand to throw that worry out, we have the fact that what we collect today will change in the future. I have been through boom and bust in antiques and collectibles, been through stamps, coins, paperweights, cast iron, tin toys, now we are in plastic/paper boom. What one thing has held true in all these markets? The very rarest will always be in demand, always go up even when a market contracts or dies off those really rare pieces will sell. If you want to have something worth more in the future, buy the best highest grade of a character or key issue that you know will last through time like Batman or Spiderman and buy something most people don't already have. Most Golden Age, some Silver will hold its own regardless but the rare ones will go way up, every time I think that's nuts, top tier rare collectibles go higher. The popular items today that are not popular in the future will go down, the average might stay average but be very hard to sell. in 20/30 years TONS of us will be older and when we try to sell or our kids do there will be less buyers that like these same collectables. BUT wait a minute something new has happened...and maybe just maybe many will keep part of the inherited books as many were successfully pulled into our love, and this is something completely new! I did not want to collect what my father or grandfather collected, like coins, stamps, or my mothers cut glass, papperweights, or hummels.. Nope I went mostly for cards/comics. And something else new, more people than ever before collect, and it's growing! In the past actually my parents didn't actively collect anything. This is very new and could continue to grow to the point most people collect something. But in the end the only thing that is 100% FACT is buy what you love! I did, and somethings went up over the last 40 years and some went down, but I still love it all! I guess if I could go back I would save up and buy a few very high grade key books I felt were too high instead of buying a bunch of cheaper average books, thats if I wanted the $$.

I had a large comic Collection and my kids showed only interest in going to the MCU movies. Now that those movies have fallen off a cliff...it's just old Dad looking at Comics. I'm also a School Teacher and sadly the Elementary kids dont even know what a Comic Book is. They know Graphic novels and Manga and get entertained in a Digital Universe.

Not sure the fertility rate will have as much impact as you anticipate given we have offset this by massive immigration, massive increases in natural disasters which decrease total supply, and the global demand/popularity that is tied to America's place as the dominant global power. Regardless this market has so many variables that make it very enjoyable to approximate but you have to expect the unexpected...and I did not see any mention of wildfires and flooding which are comic kryptonite!

Weather we like it or not. Comics are going digital. Marvel is already selling the same books they release on Wednesday’s as digital NFTs that same day online. They are selling a ton. Now i dont think physical comics will ever totally go away. But as the digital stuff becomes more main stream. They will start printing less and less of the physical books. Which will cause a price increase of any physical books in the future.

This is an interesting angle, but it doesn't account for market manipulation; there's a monopoly on fair market values--controlled by the biggest auction houses out there. They won't allow one of their largest money-making schemes to collapse; they'll continue "purchasing" large key issues from one another to maintain sales averages on GPA and Go Collect.

Thankfully I got my ASM 300 before my kids needed braces.😂 I did my part. I have 5 kids. My sons take an interest in the Marvel movies and shows. One thinks it is cool to own their first appearance in comics. Not sure if he will pick up collecting like me. My sons have collected Pokemon cards but have moved onto other things ultimately. I do wonder when they come into having disposable income what would they spend it on. 2 are already grown and into the work force. One is about investing and the other is into having nice things. 🤷‍♂️

While this is definitely possible, I stopped relying on this kind of thought process after I saw 90s comics heat up and continue to heat up after they were considered trash for many years. I never thought I’d see 90s book heat up because they were so mass produced but there’s even a market for X-Men #1. I think there will be a lot more serious issues if the population drops so low so comics could go extinct if that were the case. Anyone see the film Children of Men, that movie discusses what kind of future that could look like with low population/birth rates. Good video! Really enjoyed this discussion!

Great points about the 90s books. And, yep, there are going to be a lot more serious issues with declining birth rates. Several countries have started to provide financial incentives for people to have children, because they see this is a real concern for their future. I'll have to check out Children of Men. Comparing comics to Star Wars - Many feel that the early Star Wars films were the best and they've gone mostly downhill since. Yet the Star Wars collectibles market is still huge, almost 50 years after the first 1977 film. Now for over 20 years the US, and in fact the world, has been bombarded with Marvel films which permeate our culture, arguably even more than Star Wars ever did. Kids born well after the Marvel boom started now love the characters and movies. Even if the MCU never regains its former popularity, I think Marvel collectibles will be popular among all age groups for at least decades to come.

One of the questions, though, is are there going to be enough people around to keep the demand high enough for the current (and future) supply to maintain their value. Well, while I'm guilty of originally believing the old falsehood my books would never be worth less than at least cover price / what I paid, I was never foolish enough to believe they would be worth more, or substantially more. I never bought books for any conceit or believe they'd become valuable and only ever bought because I wanted and liked them. Any potential profit was always just a bonus. Sure ive speculated on some things for profit, and I'm happy many of my books have become "valuable" but by and large im only in it for the enjoyment. so whatever happens happens.

I think that's the best attitude to have when collecting. Obviously, we all want our books to increase in value, but if we *expect* them to, then we could be setting ourselves up for big disappointment. We should try to enjoy the ride wherever it takes us (while, of course, still trying to make wise decisions).

Hit or miss if comics will maintain/increase/decrease in value. The only reason why comics are up/popular atm is because of what disney/marvel have been doing and because of covid. I think the comic hobbie will continue to decrease from all era's. I see less kids at cons and playing video games or sports

Here's another fact..... THOUSANDS of comics (if not hundreds of thousands) of comics are lost EVERY year due to natural disasters, fires, or plain human error. Therefore, there will always be fewer books of those originally printed year after year.

A very good topic. But man oh man, it sure divides the optimists from the pessimists. With 7 kids, you're obviously in the former camp! I have three kids in their twenties, and I think they're going to need all their income just to be able to afford a decent place to live (shelter is very expensive all across Canada), so I can't quite see the optimistic view on spending over the next 20 years. I do agree, however, that the market will flood as the Boomers disappear and that there won't be enough buyers. But given the reality of climate change and of increasing global tensions, comics might be the last thing on anyone's mind even in the short term. Who knows? By the way, I like the white board. And my kids have zero interest in comics, though my youngest and I loved reading the Carl Barks stuff together.

And, yes, I am mostly optimistic about the future lol...though, I will say that housing is the one thing that also concerns me in regards to my kids (housing costs have pretty much doubled in the US since Covid). And, you're right...who really knows what the future holds...of course, no one predicted Covid yet it's had a massive impact on our economy. What big events will there be like that 20 years from now? The only comics that will retain any value will be the classics. 60's 70's and before.modern stuff is all movie hype and that is already starting to fade.

No. Comics won't be worth the paper they're printed on in twenty years. Our generation will be retiring, and generations past "X" live as minimalists with minimum expendable income. They also tend to favor life experiences over personal possessions, so even with expendable income, they most likely won't be buying comic books. If you plan on selling, sell now.

I tend to agree that this will be the case for the majority of comics. If we are right, it'll be interesting to see when the tipping point comes and they begin a consistent trajectory downwards.

@@wahoocomics I think we already are. Comic book movies make less and less money with each release, which in turn is derailing the hype train, and uptick of sales. The reason we're not seeing an influx of these books on markets is because the people who "invested" in those key books aren't yet willing to accept it was a bad investment. But, that's kind of what you get (and deserve) if you're in it for the quick gain, and not the love of the book itself.

Kids have not been reading comics for OVER 25 years. No one reads the crap from Marvel with the "artists" who think comics = cartoons.
