Good to know about temps and slow release. with 4 seasons here this is why it makes me nervous. Even the temp in the home varies a lot between summer and winter here.

Much better than yesterdays rat :) I have 4 orchids in that type of pot and thanks to a video you did a few years ago I just turn them upside down and get as much of the old growing medium out and then put in new. Love your orchid videos

Brad, is the osmocote okay to use in a sphagmoss/bark/pumice medium with Phals? Also, I am using distilled water and add cal mag to each watering. Is this good practice? When I do my pot flush, do immerse the pot with sphag/bark or just flush through from the top. Moss is my nemesis!! Thanks and love your channel.

Hi Brad, My Phal has lost 4 of 8 leaves. When i pulled itout of it's pot there was a black spot on the bottom part of the stem but it's not mushy or slimy. Could it be stem rot and if it is, can I cut the stem to stop it the advancement? It has healthy roots above the spot. Could you please do a vid on stem rot, what it looks like and possibly save the orchid?

Did you say the roots of that plant are in water, albeit not deep water? EDIT: Just watched your vid on growing roots fast. Thinking my instincts are good as I am doing close to what you suggest. Ques about air. If I completely seal the aquarium w clear wrap how often should I open to give it air and for how long? Thanks! Your vid was a big help! FYI. Aquariums are good for this. One of the chains puts them on sale $1 per gal so they are really cheap; the clear wrap is best for maintaining humidity. ___ I'm new to orchids and I'm trying to rescue a phal with barely a root! Leaves are long (7, about 7" long), dry, floppy but not laying down. I supported it in its pot with a zip tie & plant spike. Potted in pea gravel, river rock & lava rock. That pot is in another pot w pea gravel and a little water on the bottom. I spray daily with a little fert. water (cal mag & fish fert). It's living in an old aquarium with 1" cleaned wet aquarium media to help maintain the humidity. I put saran wrap covering 2/3 of the top. Fan on low about an hour a day. Been in there about 10 days. No changes. Don't expect any real soon but the support seems to finally be helping stabilize it. What'cha think? Am I killing it or helping it?

I didnt realize you could cut an orchid when it gets tall and it would still survive.

Yes, A selective cut on the woody stem with roots still on the stem above the cut. Let the wound dry and seal first for 24 hours before potting. Normally, you don't see a Phal this old, with a stem this tall. Don't try it on just any Phal though 😉

@@BradsGreenhouse so this is pretty much the situation I'm in right now with my orchid that I inherited from a lady at my garden group. I've never seen one this mature before and I need to cut some of the stem. So you're saying I can cut some of the bottom off of the Orchid as long as I leave enough stem with existing Roots above the cut? It's in the process of trying to grow a small Leaf do you think it would affect that growth? I don't really feel like I have a choice at this point it's just getting too tall and it's falling over

If after cutting old orchid in half old left over stump has roots and you replant it back into media, there is a big chance you will get a keiki from the stump. I cut my old orchid in half about a month ago. Top portion with the leaves is growing roots after replanting and old bottom portion of it with left over stump and some roots gave me a keiki. So after you cut the orchid, don’t toss the stump away. Plant it back in the same media or new media and you might get a keiki. It’s not always 100%, but there is always a chance you might get a baby orchid.

@@uskitin Not sure about what to do except for the falling over part. - Get a bigger pot & affix a stake to it. Put the unstable orchid in the staked pot. - A clay or heavy pot: thread a zip tie or wire thru the drain hole, up & on to the stake, do this in 2 vertical spots on the stake. I repotted my unstable orchid. I placed a bbq skewer in the center of the new pot placed the orchid next to it and zip tied the orchid to the skewer, added river rock, pea gravel and lava rock as my medium. Working perfectly. - Plastic pot you can drill or burn holes in it. Weight it down w rocks or heavy gravel. - Improvise from here.

Could have been many things. from bud blast because of lack of humidity or a chill, to to young or weak or just bad luck. I wouldn't worry unless it does it again.

Hi, I can see that you are not an orchiman, 😂. Don't get offended. The best to cut the orchid on the bottom, and let left overs roots to grow a new baby orchid. Your orchid is not blossoming years already. You are neglecting your orchid. Sorry. This is not helping. I don't need weed to grow in my home.
