hahahaha I remember this music too well. my friend and I like doing the stupidest crap, so the guy with the heliotrope that you're not supposed to be At your first time through, we barely beat him through combos, arming ash with the best bomb we could, and got a bottlemail to steal his heliotrope on top. one of our best moments in the game, everything was just barely done. and the game even congratulated us. ahh good times.

The Version with the Flute is just the official "Arranged" Version, it's on the Composer's (Tenpei Sato) personal Best-of-Album Vol.2 "Heroic Saga" if you manage to track that down.

I know right? The free-movement system was janky as hell but it was amazing, I wish Nippon Ichi still experimented like this. Makai Kingdom shows a lot of these systems even better, and both are completely forgotten. Well, we got the port of PB at least, but barely done, no passion at all, we don't even have element icons like ffs but I digress.

This game has such a neat concept, but with one fatal flaw. If you didn't solve the puzzle before your party turned back into phantoms and disappeared, marina would get her butt handed to her, and you would lose the level. I wonder if the base concept would be fixed if they were to remake this game into a style of DISGAEA where you have unlimited turns to solve the level. 🤔

Somewhat belated answer, I know, but just so it IS answered: in the PC version they simply replaced it with the official "Arranged" version (still made by Tenpei Sato himself). He does this for pretty much all the games he worked on actually, releasing "Arranged Soundtracks" that redo some songs of a game using actual instruments and/or give them proper endings instead of looping (the latter moreso for tracks with lyrics, giving them a proper second verse aswell). I'm guessing either he or someone at N1 just prefers that version, judging by how it was used as early as Disgaea 2's PSP DLC (though interestingly enough, PB's own PSP release, which released after D2, still has the original version of the track). Technically it IS of higher quality (again, better instrumentation), even if I agree the flute really doesn't fit it.

***** I just found the gameplay to be annoying,too much grinding to get either your ghosts to be very stong or get a lot of ghosts to be of decent level to go forward. Also I did not like the linking system....the geo panels of disgaea or the dark portals of la pucelle tactics were just more enjoyable to use. Some graphic choices also annoyed me...namely the fact that the characters did not have a "idle" animation in combat...an odd too retro choice in my opinion...however as I mentioned the music and also the story were very enjoyable.

Nuinwing You don't need to grind your Phantoms at all. The amount of power Phantoms have, even if you reincarnate, is minuscule compared to the power of any item you level up through fusion. Even if you don't use Failure fusion, you could easily destroy the main game with a Weed that's been fused for as much SPD as possible, since it'll give you so many turns you can beat any enemy with Grass Shot or any SPD based attack. Phantom Brave isn't like Disgaea where you need to level your characters. The only thing that matters in this game are the items you are using and the passive abilities on Phantoms. Once you have a strong weapon, you don't even need to summon Phantoms, you can just use Marona.

+Nuinwing Unfortunately J.L. is right. I do love Phantom Brave because it feels that the mechanics are more complex and less streamlined than Disgaea, but its design is problematic. It's either very difficult if you don't know some of the very specific tactics to gaining a powerful character and item, or it's extremely easy once you do. It limits gameplay styles, and that's pretty upsetting. It might have gotten better designed systems like Disgaea did in its sequels, but I think it looked too complex on the surface and that caused it to receive poor sales. It had only one sequel, and it was just a simplified version of this.
