I was not myself last night couldn't set things right with apologies or flowers Out of place as a cryin' clown who could only frown and the play went on for hours And as I lived my role I swore I'd sell my soul for one love Who would stand by me and give me back the gift of laughter One love who would stand by me and after making love we'd... Dream a bit of style We'd dream a bunch of friends Dream each others smile And dream it never ends I was not myself last night in the morning light I could see the change was showing Like a child who was always poor reaching out for more I could feel the hunger growing And as I lost control I swore I'd sell my soul for one love Who would sing my song and fill this emptiness inside me One love who would sing my song and lay beside me while we'd.... Dream a bit of style We'd dream a bunch of friends Dream each others smile And dream it never ends All my dreams are lost and I can't sleep And sleep alone could ease my mind All my tears have dried and I can't weep Old emotions may they rest in peace and dream, dream a bunch of friends Rest in peace, and dream, dream it never ends

This movie in general is an amazing piece of art that is strangely not well known. The performance, visuals, and music is really one of the coolest and most interesting things ever made in my opinion. I first saw it randomly in the 90s on TV late one night, then became obsessed with it, and turn all friends on to it. All of us were just blown away by how weird, scary, funny, sad, and just bizarre this movie was.

+deborah wood I agree. I only found the movie maybe six years ago and it's now one of my favorite movies (and soundtracks) of all time. I can't see how this wasn't popular when it came out, because it's just fantastic (which is an understatement).
@ivorypenelope84448 жыл бұрын
I saw this movie the first time when I was ten, about four months after its initial release. Popularity wasn't the issue. Winslow's disfigurement scene was really intense for that time period. I remember when I saw it the second time. Several of us had seen it at least once and had come back to see it again. But when the disfigurement scene came, about thirty of us went to the lobby to wait for it to end. This probably played a part in what happened next. it became a cult classic that kept playing at midnight for years before it hit cable. I saw the movie at least 100 times before 1980. I still remember the time they showed it on MTV during Halloween '82. I also remember the first time I saw it on public TV in BW. Even then the movie was cool, and the truest film ever made about the Entertainment Industry ever. In the seventies, being a cult movie was the ultimate popularity. And this movie ranks right up there with John Waters and Rocky Horror. now a new generation can discover it here.

Other movies would have made this version of the song, the supposedly stolen one, a terribly, badly mixed mess to highlight that stealing is bad, but here they gave it straight, and I appreciate that. Sure, this version is more "commercial", but I'd wager it's better than Winslow's version, because want it or not, stolen music isn't synonymous with bad and desperate music.

Reminds me of the fact that Swan was once in a similar situation with Winslow. He too was desperate enough to sell his soul for something he THOUGHT he wanted and got punished for it. Winslow wanted his music to be heard, but only bastardised versions of it got performed. Swan wanted to stay beautiful, but could barely ever show his face in public again.

I often wonder, if this was supposed to be the final song of the film. Hear me out. Swan is seeking a song to open the Paradise with. He finds the song through Winslow. He perverts it into a song for the Beach Bums, and then the Undeads/Beef. But neither really does the song any justice. So, Swan decides the only person who can perform the song is him: live, coast to coast on Network television. But listen to the words: Swan has found his "one who will sing his song". He found Phoenix. I just find it unusual that the end of the film culminates in Swan attempting to murder his new love on live tv. For what? It won't sell any more records. But to debut his masterpiece and then have it end in a wedding/murder.... well.... that just got the attention of every person watching. I get the feeling this was supposed to be a much different movie. It's kind of like that scene near the end with the crowds rushing into the Paradise.... the doors still have the Juicy Fruits logo on them. Why would a crowd be rushing in to see the Juicy Fruits? It is still a great film, but I still feel we didn't get the whole story.
