Probably obvious to most, but it's a neat touch for the dress to move out of frame and have the focus on Alma (representing his shift in priorities).

She humbles him by making him wait an uncomfortable moment for her to accept. But, then humbles herself by asking HIM to marry HER. Back on even ground. He can't picture a relationship between equals. (Except his sister) But if they aren't equals it won't work. How many households are supported by his intellectual work? 30 that we see? Seamstresses, Cyril and models. Another 10-20 milliners, fabric designers/merchants, clerks and boutiques. He needs to be flat on his back. But he'll never ask. So, Alma will put him there Even if it kills him.

This scene is why I love movies. A tender, quiet, intimate moment, shot and acted so precisely as to evoke the perfect feeling in the audience. As the dress slowly fades away, this "third party" that she had been sharing him with moves off stage right and his focus becomes entirely on her. It took his bout with death to refocus him on what was truly important. No score, no flourishes, just an almost imperceptible zoom and reframing, and the real sounds of traffic passing below. The way I feel when i watch this... it's not the frills and flourishes and excentricities that are important in life, just the real, and here he knows that she is real and so is his love for her.

Just for that she should have told him to do one. One of the most unlikable and selfish characters ever put to film. His attitude and the way he sees life and how he treats her for the majority of the film is vile and men like that with mummy issues should be forced to live alone for the rest of their lives.

@@jaycuthbert245Or... if you have some empathy and love for the human soul, you could try to to understand and help someone out. You know, having somd compassion for the other while still standing up for youself. Alma saw a broken man and helped him to be vulnerable again. Or you know, "they should be forced to live alone for the rest of their lifes" because why not.

@moin khan PTA has made some good films, maybe even some masterpieces, but this film is far from being a classic. The plot is weak, the pacing sucks, and the cinematography is boring. I mean, are you seriously that much of a fan of PTA that you can't look at his work critically?

Anyone who thinks it's romantic to poison someone to make them fall in love with you, marry you or to slow them down for a workaholic lifestyle etc is absolutely crazy. It's bunny boiler mode. It's about power and control and only people with mental problems and unhealthy relationships would do this. Love is preventing harm not causing it. Brain dead viewers think it's beautiful because it's an art house film.
