If your drone tends to tip over on landing just at the point you're shutting the motors down it might be down to how you're doing it. If you're shutting down the same way as you start up, time for a change!

My "On the Kitchen Table" videos are mainly aimed at newcomers to multirotors, quadcopters, drones and UAVs, particularly to the DJI product range, and the Phantom line in particular. I have how to's, product reviews, tips, tricks, hints and information for beginners and those in the early stages of the hobby. I film "on the kitchen table" to show people that, like me, you don't need a workshop and an array of specialist equipment and years of experience to get started and progress with flying these amazing aircraft and enjoying making great aerial videos and stills. So if you have bought, or are thinking of buying, a DJI Phantom 3, Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision or Vision+ or Plus, Inspire 1 or even building your own DJI Flamewheel F450 or F550, or considering the Lily, 3DR Solo, Yuneec or more then you too can do it... on the kitchen table!

Thanks like others have commented I always hand catch, but when I used to land I just did the 3 sec left stick hold down, never even thought about doing a CSC. Off topic just did an upgrade of the motors and ESCs,as per your video which I watched after I had done the upgrade,so far very good. My reason for the upgrade was an unexplained fall from the sky, and after extensive review of the video and other flight statistics I diagnosed a faulty ESC/motor,I had lost confidence so replaced the lot.Keep up the good work, thanks.

Very useful and informative video. Thanks! Let's not forget that this hobby is in its infant stages relative to its potential, meaning there are likely TONS of noobs (like myself) who find vids like this useful. So just to be clear, holding the throttle stick down for 2+ secs while on the ground or while holding the phantom will shut the motors off. But while in flight, holding the throttle stick down will NOT shut the motors off because the Phantom will "sense" that it is lowering. And this "sense", apparently, is not due to a change in elevation due to GPS or a change in elevation due to barometric pressure. The "sense" is within the craft's own sensors. So it doesn't matter whether one is in GPS mode, Atti mode, or Naza M Manual mode. I hope I got this right.

had the same thing happen with my Tovsto V2. It functions the same way. I figured out what I did wrong but good to get an explanation as to why. Although mine goes to idle speed when throttle is held straight down for a couple seconds with no downward movement. Then you can do a shut down or wait 10 secs and it will shut down automatically.

Thanks for this video.. My Phantom 3 came with a small quick start guide, no real manual at all. It didn't explain anything about proper landing procedure, and as soon as I would land I would try to shut down the motors by CSC and twice almost had a tipover .. Then I thought this cant be right and looked it up here.. All the manual had to say was "keep holding the throttle stick down after touchdown for 3 seconds to shutdown motors" The funny thing is I think many people don't know this and have had dangerous attempted landings, so they want to hand catch it instead of landing, that's actually the most dangerous thing in my opinion. DJI needs to improve their manuals..

Darin, like you, I am annoyed that dji didn't print out the full manual. The quick start didn't even state there was a full manual was available on their website. I could have avoided a lot of pain otherwise.

thanks for that tip !!!......for the past three years i have been using the csc method with no problems until the last month or so....for the last month it was tipping over every time i tried this shutting down sequence. It h had worked so perfectly for me for the longest time....i just couldn't understand for the life of me what was all of a sudden different ???....i took the props off and noticed that one side raced while the other went off hence the difference in balance and the subsequent tip over....i started to catch it for a bit which was a hassle and i think at times a little dangerous so anyway, i thank you for your tip.....it will greatly reduce my prop budget...cheers !!

Shaun Matthews I hand catch a lot. Unfortunately, I've recently had a gimbal break after a tree encounter. I have to say I think the abundance of hand catches might have helped weaken the gimbal before the ultimate break. There is still significant drone stress on a hand catch. Go really easy on the hand catches if you want to increase the life of your stock gimbal.

+David Ison I'm very intrigued as to how you perform your hand catches having read that, for me it's simply: 1 - hover phantom within arms reach 2 - grip one of the legs 3 - stop motors with throttle stick which as far as I can see, can never put anywhere near as much stress on the gimbal as even the softest landing, which will always involve an impact no matter how small, while a hand catch has none, at least, not in any way I can personally concieve of safely performing one.

Yes, I had the same problem with near disastrous results. I gave up on the CSC and went to the other method of simply holding the "throttle" all the way down for 2-3 seconds. However, it didn't work the first time I tried it. Turns out the confusion rested on the definition of "throttle." To me, the throttle makes it go faster or slower. That would be the right hand stick. The left hand stick, which I now know the manual is referring to as the "throttle" makes the unit go up or down or rotate on its axis. Now that I have waded through the confusion, no further problems.

Simon, thanks for the great vids. I have a question for you? Have you ever experienced a tip over on engine start? I recently had my Phantom 3 Pro tip backwards and sustain a prop strike. I had just landed with the nose into the wind and shut the motors. Then, I started them again, it tipped backwards. The wind was about 10mph. I think as the motors start, there is that spool up before they go to idle and that extra lift plus a small wind gust tipped it backwards.

GREAT TUTORIALS !! Will you hold your phantom off the table and hold the throttle down to shut off the motors. This will prove that they wont shut down in flight as the aircraft should detect that it is not on the ground. I hope that makes sense ? Cheers Paul.

Great videos ! What is the difference between pulling the throttle (left stick down) and the same stick down and in to the bottom right - both seem to do the same thing. I have 3 Advanced and even in very calm days the landing in auto mode; the drone shakes a bit when landing and I can see some prop damage.

I'm new to the phantom drone. I've only used the throttle down. I'm surprised people use the engines off movement. I'm also surprised the engines off movement works when you are not landed. the amount of crashes caused by pushing both sticks in are shocking. I think Dji need to add an engines off button as unlikely as it is, being able to preform that manuvore in flight is a little bit of an oversight.

Why would any pilot pull the sticks in like this during flight? Think about the characteristics of it for a second, full downward yaw to the right putting it into a spin while trying to pitch it down and to the left. It's called the nausea shot I guess...
