Lyrics Valjean, at last, We see each other plain 'm'sieur le mayor, ' You'll wear a different chain Before you say another word, Javert Before you chain me up like a slave again Listen to me! there is something I must do This woman leaves behind a suffering child There is none, but me who can intercede In mercy's name, three days are all I need Then I'll return, I pledge my word Then I'll return You must think me mad I've hunted you across the years Men like you can never change A man such as you. Believe of me what you will (men like you can never change) There is a duty that I'm sworn to do (men like me can never change) You know nothing of my life (no, 24601) All I did was steal some bread (my duty's to the law) You know nothing of the world (you have no rights) You would sooner see me dead (come with me 24601) But not before I see this justice done (now the wheel has turned around Jean Valjean is nothing now) I am warning you Javert (dare you talk to me of crime) I'm a stronger man by far (I'm the price you had to pay) There is power in me yet (every man is born in sin) My race is not yet run (every man must choose his way) You know nothing of Javert I was born inside a jail I was born with scum like you I am from the gutter too!

How fast the minutes fly away and every minute colder Hurry dear another day is dying Dont you hear the winter wind is crying Theres a darkness which comes without a warning But i will sing u lullabies and wake u in the morning!! Was a bit confused how he knew it was Valjean here when just earlier he didn't recognize him before
@lisamatveeva96884 жыл бұрын
@@eljordinio7647 This is because at this point in the book, Valjean has just publically revealed his identity. He did this because the police had caught another person who they thought was Jan Valjean, and Valjean didn't want an innocent person to go to jail because of him. The corresponding moment in the musical is "Who am I?" but it isn't clear from the song that he actually confessed and Javert heard him. Immediately after the confession, the book Valjean rushed to Fantine, who was dying, but Javert confronted him in the hospital ward. Upon learning that Valjean was a criminal, Fantine died from shock. Valjean left with Javert, and was actually imprisoned and sentenced to death, which is not in the musical. He escaped by faking his death, however, and later saved Cossette from the Thénardiers like he did in the musical.
@eljordinio76474 жыл бұрын
@@lisamatveeva9688 if valjean mentions Javert before revealing who he is, wouldn't that mean that Javert was there at court and DID hear the confession? Hence how he knows valjean's identity in the confrontation
@lisamatveeva96884 жыл бұрын
@@eljordinio7647 In the musical that is perhaps the case! In the book, everything is a bit more complicted: Javert isn't present at court because the hearing takes place in a different town, and Valjean goes there and back quite quickly without telling anyone. Some hours after Valjean's confession, Javert gets an arrest warrant for Madeleine/Valjean simply because he is an inspector with the local police. This warrant proves to Javert what he was suspecting anyway. Of course he immediately proceeds to arrest him in what becomes the confrontation scene in the musical.

Is there more of Javert's backstory in the book? Cause here he says that he was born inside a jail, and I'd like to know more.
@josephcarlisle19438 жыл бұрын
+Sabrina McClain his parents were both fugitives and his mother was pregnant at the time. so growing up in such harsh conditions javert thought it was the fugitives fault that he had such a bad childhood. he thinks that no one can change. which when push comes to shove it would be his downfall in "Javert's suicide" when he questions his own morals when jean saves marius
@sacrecharlemagne22622 жыл бұрын
@@josephcarlisle1943 To add to this Javert's mother was Roma (a gypsy) meaning he was born a stereotype. Growing up he knew that the world would only ever see him as the child of criminal gypsies and he could never lead a normal life. He could either live up to society's expectations and go into crime or he could go the complete opposite way and become the most harsh, exacting officer of the law France had ever seen. He obviously chose the latter. Javert himself is a victim as much as many of the other characters in the book: because of circumstances outside his control he was forced by a judgemental and uncaring society into a role it had set aside for him with no chance to live the life he wanted in peace.
