Originally this song was sung by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh’s uncle. Now if you read up on them, they belong to a musical ‘gharana’ or household which means that from a very young age they undergo hours and hours of musical and singing practise, and if you look at a qawwal sitting, or any old videos, Rahat didn’t lead, he sat behind his uncle and father, in other words, through their merits they have to rise through the ranks and the Ustad (mentor/master) decides if you are ready or good enough. We have several gharanas still. Boys are generationally trained in music. It’s endangered and struggling but we love them. Also check out the Sabri Brothers, another powerhouse qawwal gharana, sadly Amjad Sabri who was carrying on his father and uncle’s legacy was assassinated in 2016. To the best of my knowledge, this sort of a tradition is unique to the subcontinent’s urdu speaking, Muslim, qawalli performing troupes, who were basically troubadours and performed at shrines, poetry recitals, etc. Before 1947, they received patronage and hence survived. They also perform different types of classical music like thumri, ghazal etc. With most musical pieces, the meaning can simultaneously apply to Divine and Earthly love, in other words transcendental, which the singer emulates and that’s why the music is so powerful for the listener. The Coke Studio version of Afreen that you’ve heard is a modern fusion version, which is also superb, why? Because Ustad Rahat has received unparalleled training since boyhood!

Momina Mustehsan is a really very well singer , but no one can match Rahat Fateh Ali Khan , he is pure legend , started singing when was just 3 years old , was taught by a great legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who was the best quwali singer in the entire world his name is written in guiness book of world record , no one can match Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan . Brother have to find more about Pakistan , these singers including the new ones such as Atif Aslam / coke studio , are not just famous in Asia but pretty much all over Africa .
