.Gibbs phase rule: -

The rule was proposed by American scientist J.W. Gibbs.
Identifies the degree of freedom in a system using the number of component and the number of phase.
In more simple words; it tells us how many intensive variables must be defined to work out the state of system.

Phase on igneous rock system includes minerals of various composition, crystal structure, amorphous solids (glass) and fluid such as liquid and glass.

Chemical components are usually expressed as proportion of oxides.
The most common chemical components in igneous reaction includes SiO2, Al2O3, FeO, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O, H2O and CO2.
