Tim, I recently wrote a post on my blog which gives some insight into my retouching process for this and other Pagani projects I've worked on, www.rvt3.net/site/essays/2017/03/huayra-roadster/

I also do it (I have very sensitive eyes, in bright daylight I can hardly keep them open without shades) on a normal dslr and expose correctly. You've got all this data and stuff inside those cameras, like exposure meter and so on, you cold be wearing blindfolds and still expose correctly. And since he's a pro I think he knows what he's doing.

Curious as to why when shooting with the Profoto strobe you were using the Air Remote? The XF as built in Air Remote triggering capability so why the Air Remote in the hot shoe?
@RichardThompsonIII8 жыл бұрын
The XF built-in trigger is great for studio, but in locations where the lights might be far away or through metal obstructions the Air Remote offers more power.
@mikeg60698 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I use the XF's in-camera triggering in studio but have never used it outside. I didn't know there was a range difference.

Great work, Richard! And thank you for sharing this, Phase One. :) Richard, if you see this, did you use a polarizing filter behind the square filter? Thanks.

the camera is mostly wearing a single lee 100mm circular polarizer in this video.

Amazing. Would like to know which Tripod and Tripod head he's using. Anyone an idea?!
@Marcustx237 жыл бұрын
The head looks like an Arca-Swiss C1. Cannot tell what kind of tripod that is. Rich has historically used a Really Right Stuff tripod but that isn't what he's using here.
@RichardThompsonIII7 жыл бұрын
As Mark suggested, it's an Arca C1 Cube with an RRS plate. I travelled light to this gig and rented sticks. I chose the C1 because it's the most compact geared head which confidently supports the Phase MFD system. If I'd shipped an extra case of gear with me the camera would be on my RRS TVC-45 sticks and the PG-02 gimbal...

NO WAY is any medium format camera one of the FASTEST cameras in the world. Highest IQ, indisputably. But highest speed? Gimme a freaking break.

Maybe he meant one of fastest cameras within the world of medium format which would definitely be true, but I agree, he didn't come across like he meant it that way.

But why was he using ND filter for photographs ?!!
@RichardThompsonIII7 жыл бұрын
I was using a polarizer some of the time, but I only use NDs on cars if there's some background element I want slowed down, or it's exceptionally bright (had to use NDs at White Sands NM for instance)

@Briterflix8 жыл бұрын
Yep, everyone one that I've shot there loved the results. It's a great background. I was shocked when I saw this video. Back in the film days Atlantic Ave. was my spot for shooting models. I use to shoot with the Canon AE-1 and the Mamiya 645. The natural light is perfect there. You just gave me an idea for my next engagement shoot. It is a great place to get shot.
@RichardThompsonIII7 жыл бұрын
No one's trying to put down...the look of all those columns in repetition for such a long distance is surreal! I wouldn't have shot there if I didn't think so. It is definitely the type of environment which requires security for a shoot though.

First, I have to say, great photographs - truly stunning stuff, excellent attention to detail in terms of framing, light, background, and use of telephoto compression. But I do have to ask, isn't there something a little unsettling about bringing in a 2 million dollar car, shooting it with a 50 thousand dollar camera while wearing (ball-parking here) a 1500 dollar Arct'eryx jacket, exploiting the admittedly neat look of the area, but then making a point of saying "this neighborhood is not a great neighborhood, not the safest neighborhood for sure?" I get it's expensive and there's liability to consider, but what have-versus-have-not moment: wealthy New Yorkers who "know these locations really well" come in with a police escort, take advantage of the interesting scenery (but don't really engage with it), make a ton of money off the shoot, give absolutely nothing back. How many peoples' day could you have made if you reserved an hour to roll around the corner to the nearest public school and let kids sit behind the wheel for a minute. And honestly, those would be good photos, too, even if just for the PR. You could even keep the police escort if needed. Just a thought...

Oh Joshua...you know what they say about assumptions. You're acting as if the whole team are amateurs who play at this as a hobby...writing off one of the best producers I've worked with to date (www.jakemills.com) as a "wealthy new yorker" etc. confirms you're simply trying to validate the perspective you drummed up. No need to cast shade, friend! There was a public school a block down on the corner, and when school got out a number of kids did stop by. Pagani is great about that, and being a small manufacturer allows them to connect directly with many upon many charities or charity orgs for car shows... speaking for myself personally I *always* put kids in the driver's seat (of any cool sports car I'm working with), and remind them that study and hard work pays off! We can't post little kids pictures without all sorts of NDAs (including parents) and historically it's just not worth the legal trouble...but the # of pictures we all take for those kids and their parents is beyond counting. Oh yeah, my windbreaker was $190 on sale at backcountry.
@JokingJay7 жыл бұрын
Richard Thompson III That's truly excellent and encouraging news, and thanks for both the insights as well as the reality check regarding comparative levels of wealth and the like - your points about my own assumptions or attempt to build a narrative are entirely valid. That said I'd still hold your producer (who is no doubt talented at what he/you guys do, the images being proof enough of that) to task on his assertion that this is "not a great neighborhood." As someone who has worked as a teacher in communities that outsiders (myself included in that label) would consider "not great" (and for understandable reasons related to safety, crime, etc.), it still gives me great pause to listen to people not intimately connected with a neighborhood describe it in such terms. (For instance, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing as much given that the depth, causes, and severity of such issues are not something I am required to experience or even ponder except by my own choosing, and therefore I think I would lack certain credibility or humility in making such claims, not to mention the potential to offend people who live and work there.) Still, apologies again for the presumptuous nature of the previous comment; it is certainly not my intent to diminish the obvious achievement present in what you do and have accomplished artistically or commercially in this shoot or any other. I can absolutely realize and accept that the somewhat accusatory and adversarial framing of my qualm with an isolated statement betrays that intention.
