One week into my PhD. I suspect I'll be coming back to this many times in the months ahead. Thank you.

Same! These types of videos (especially his) are my only form counselling. It's not ideal by for some this is the only option available. You may want to check these channels as well: Andy Stapleton, Dr. Amina Yonis, Tara Brabzon, Phd productivity

@@samreadssome2403 Thanks. I'm subscribed to all of them already! I find myself randomly saying, 'Hello. I'm Tara Brabazon and I'm the Dean of Graduate Research at Flinders University...' at random points in my day. 😄

I had never had the impostor syndrome until I studied abroad. During my PhD I have had collaborations with researchers in Austria and UK who hosted me in their labs. Since these experiences I started having a strong impostor feeling. I frequently compare myself with others. I am sure I will take your advice. Thank you very much

Your message is absolutly beautiful. I am PhD and young mother and been coping with Imposter syndrome for a long time. Understanding it as a "positive" part of myself that is trying to protect me really helps to kind of accept it and come to peace with it. I've been trying yoga and meditation as well, looking forward to your video about it!

First year PhD student here: this video really helped me put things in perspective after feeling like crap. Your advice is not just honest, but accessible, and your voice is incredibly calming and reassuring. Thank you for posting this.

Thanks a lot, this a very useful video! I've definitely experienced this before. Well, I still have imposter syndrome, despite finishing my PhD. One thing that helped me cope with it is learning to praise and congratulate myself on my achievements - big or small. This may sound obvious, but for me it's been fundamental as I have a pretty low self esteem.

you're a great communicator. i was at the juncture and literally the fear of failing was so great coz IF I FAILED there'd be so much humiliation and stuff at home i'd never be able to live it down. and the stark reality of it made me progressively more and more afraid each day. had my answer been that i'd be okay with failure too, perhaps i'd have been able to calmly chart a way through. i wish i'd found this video of yours 2yrs back when i was in the thickest of it. thank you still.

Great video 👏👏👏 thank you. I wish I was the imposter type of over achievers. My type of imposter always stops me from taking action... I either stop what I start or I don't even start

this was a very well thought adn formulated argument on the so-called Impostor Syndrome. It is so funny that the mayority of the people I hear talking about it are in the academia industry, why is that? I have met many faculty and high caliber researchers that are not smarter than me, they just more privilaged.

They talk about it in industry, too. In many ways, "imposter syndrome" (along with "growth mindset") are weaponized to make the worker internalize and feel alienated rather than push the workplace to change.

Also week into my PhD, a month into moving to a completely new country with my partner and not knowing anyone else. Thank you a lot for your videos, Dr. Hayton! It would be great also if you could start a podcast and share some of these thought in a greater detail.
