Many people might be interested in doing a PhD in Leadership, but they are likely going to be mistaken in the program that you're going to choose. Most leadership programs do not call themselves a leadership program.
What you are looking for are phds in strategic management with an emphasis on Upper Echelons or Top Management Theory, or a PhD in Organizational Behavior, with either a focus on individuals or teams. There are also people doing leadership in education, and strategic human resources.
There are going to be significant differences in the outcomes that you Get if you pursue a PhD in Leadership versus a PhD in either Strategic Management or Organizational Behavior. A PhD in leadership is going to be more practitioner-oriented, however the more mainstream PhD programs are older and more established.
What will you study in this PhD programs? you will study things like the dynamics of teams in large organizations, and how it affects the performance of the firm. You will also study things like leader-follower dynamics. You will be surprised and how little we actually know about leadership and its impact on the organization. There is still much to be understood.
The key thing that you should be thinking about when you are doing a PhD is to understand why you want to do it. a PhD is generally a research degree, and you will likely be doing research activities if you pursue it.
If you're thinking of doing a PhD in leadership to understand your business a little more or to go into clinical practice, I would recommend that you look for comparable MBA programs as well, or even industrial psychology programs.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
