Two doctoral degrees, but what's the difference and which one should you consider?

Building community is so important. I will be completing my nursing PhD degree this summer (2023). It was difficult to do this during a pandemic and online. Building community was key and my program was very good at supporting online and face to face community!

Congratulations on your soon-to-be completed PhD! I agree the most important part of my program was my cohort, some of who I will always keep in touch with

I'm a nurse practitioner and have found the DNP to provide very little benefit. Employer's don't really care about your education it's your experience they care about. My recommendation, if you're a nurse practitioner and want to get a doctoral degree get the PhD. That will allow you to be marketable in academy where the DNP doesn't really open a lot of doors. Also, keep in mind the DNP degree is so common it's not going to separate you from the masses like the PhD will.

Thank you do this breakdown.. trying to decided on a Dnp/fnp or phd. The dissertation is what scares me. Also I would have to work in academia (5 years) once completed as a part of an agreement to go to school for free.

@@DrWilliamMartinPhDI have 3 years with my fnp degree but i was unable to get a stable job, because most places asked me for 3 years of experience. I some ocasions, the competition was hard, like 12 fnp in the same room applying fir 1 position. I am still unnemployed as fnp. I was working as public heakth advisor earning less than a registered nurse. I tried to return as a RN but when the employer sees that i have a masters as FNP, they refused to hire me as RN. Idk the reason. In my area there are like 12 fnp in the rooms for fnp application. The minimun are 7 applicants the same day. Too much fnp. I assume they have better qualifications than me because nobody calls me. I forgot to mention i got a 5 months job as fnp in a rural area in another state, i couldn't bring my children. My mom took care of them, but she was so tired to take care of them. They fired me for having a covid. Accusing me of dont use my mask as required ( it was not true). I wish to have a permanent job as fnp in my area, but nobody hires me for lack of experience. I applied for secretary, for health records assitant at a local hospital, but they send me rejection letters. I dont know what to do, maybe study a dnp (i ended my masters with a 3.97 gpa) or study a post master certicate in mental health. Or change a career in something different, but idk. What would you do if you were in my situation?

I personally wouldn’t get a PhD in nursing, I have my anesthesia DNAP, however my interests have strayed in recent years to the STEM field and I have been working on a masters in materials engineering with a biological focus, I personally found the nursing PhD too paper ladened (which is also why I chose not to become an NP) I have a personal need to get my hands dirty , be in the thick of things & work in the abstract, as it applies to critical thinking and I’ll be honest, the bedside wore me out, which is why I transitioned into the CRNA realm, in different ways I felt the NP & PhD routes would bring me back full circle to that, albeit in different ways & I just simply wanted no part of it. Bless those who do go the extra mile & take those routes, I didn’t have the patience, for it, I prefer specialization, over being a generalist, though generalists do have their strengths as well.

I am probably as much a "hands on" clinician as you are, and I agree the PhD does little to enhance one's specialized skills. For me, I achieved a PhD as a goal, not unlike those colleagues of mine who do the crazy Amazon Jungle marathon races, or other similar challenges. I did it to have it. Now that I do, it's my choice whether to use it or simply engrave it on my headstone. Best wishes!

Hope you're fine Doc! I am leaving M.B.B.S. I am currently in 2nd professional and would shift to BSc Nursing because I have no interest in being a doctor of medicine. Please pray for me as currently in Pakistan people consider that being a DO is all. By the way, thanks for such a good video. Gained a lot of knowledge!

This is a great channel. I'm looking at an accelerated BSN to Ph.D. but my problem is that I really want to go into psychiatric nursing and do research on psychiatric nursing. If I have the support to get into either one should I get the experience in psychiatric nursing before the Ph.D. or just get into the Ph.D program and pursue the MSN in psychiatric nursing after the Ph.D?

Hi there! Great question. I'd recommend getting the masters degree in psych nursing and getting some experience. That experience will benefit you later by giving you some foundation upon which to base your PhD. Best wishes and happy new year!

@@DrWilliamMartinPhD the only reason why I would do a Ph.D is because I could potentially get a certificate in pmhnp afterwards. It would save me money. The DNP degree is expensive.

@@yanyanwang7094you will need people who put you on a position with recommendations, there are a lot of new grads and a lot of people who studied on line. For a rn position you will compete withvat least 30 appliacants each time you apply.
