Many PhD students are working full-time or part-time jobs while studying for their doctorates. This is not an easy thing to do, but given the economic climate, it's something an increasing proportion of graduate school PhD candidates find themselves having to do.
This video is the first in a two-part series in which I'll be sharing six top tips to help you juggle the work-study balance a little more effectively and make the process of getting your doctorate much less painful!
The first tip in this video is ensuring you set clear goals, which consist of realistic, check-off-able tasks that you are 100% in control of. Don't set unrealistic targets which are only going to make you feel super unaccomplished when you don't achieve them. This sounds obvious but it's a mistake I see people making all the time - in the video I'll share an example.
The second tip is about creating a study schedule that fits with your work patterns. You need to have slots of time every week that are dedicated to your studies; you need to know when those slots are occurring and exactly what you're going to do within them.
Thirdly and lastly, you need to make the best of the "dead time" in your day. The time spent commuting, on call, or waiting around at work can be a great opportunity to power through PhD tasks, large or small.
