Thank you for a fantastic video. How does critical realism compare with pragmatism please?
@DegreeDoctorКүн бұрын
Thank you for your kind words! Great question! Critical Realism and Pragmatism both deal with the nature of reality and how we can know it, but they approach it differently. Critical Realism says there is a reality independent of our perceptions, but our understanding of it is always partial and mediated by social, cultural, and historical contexts. Pragmatism, on the other hand, focuses on what "works" in practice, emphasising practical outcomes and utility over philosophical concerns about reality. In short, while Critical Realism is about uncovering the structures underlying social phenomena, Pragmatism is more about adapting your methods and frameworks to achieve practical results. Both are valuable, depending on the aims of your research! Also, I have a video about Pragmatism coming out on Monday, 7 October, so keep an eye out for that! 😊

Thank you so much for your video. I am currently 3/4 of the way through my doctorate and working closely with my supervisor .. who recommended Critical Realism for my research! My thesis looks at sexual misconduct in Higher Education (UK) and how this negatively impacts students, especially disabled students. I want to uncover the level of sexual misconduct that takes place, disability stigma and institutional barriers that prevent students from disclosing their assault. Thank you again for the video, great work!

Thank you so much for sharing your research journey! It sounds like an incredibly important and impactful study, and Critical Realism is a great fit for uncovering those deeper, structural issues like disability stigma and institutional barriers. I’m so glad the video was helpful to you - best of luck with the final stretch of your doctorate! Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions along the way. Keep up the amazing work!

Hi Rebecca, that’s fantastic to hear! Critical Realism is a great approach for mixed-methods research, as it allows you to explore both the underlying structures and the observable outcomes in your study. If you need any further guidance or have any questions as you explore this paradigm, feel free to reach out. I’m so glad the videos have been helpful to you!

Hi..I have published already 2 paper on the field of crisis management on the Scopus indexed journal including one is indexed in Scopus Q1 before studying PhD. Do you think I can do published by publication? How many paper need to publish on the related field for the doing PhD published by publication?
@DegreeDoctor4 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment! It really depends on your discipline and institution's specific requirements. Some institutions may allow you to pursue a PhD by publication with a certain number of high-quality papers already published, but the number required can vary. I recommend checking with the PhD admissions team at your chosen institution to see if your existing publications would qualify and how many more papers you would need. Best of luck!

This is such a great video and you’ve done an amazing job explaining the process. I’m just a bit unsure if for instance when you create a theme and then decide to split it, would you have a section explaining that process in your methodology or data analysis? Also you then provided a summary of each theme but would it be of the original one or the final split version?
@DegreeDoctor7 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words! Great question - when splitting a theme, it’s definitely a good idea to explain this process in your methodology or data analysis section. You can describe how the initial theme emerged and the rationale for splitting it, along with any changes this caused in your understanding of the data. As for summarising the themes, it’s best to present the final version, after you’ve made any revisions or splits, to give a clear picture of the final thematic structure. I hope that helps!

Thank you! I’m so glad the video helped you realise critical realism aligns with your approach. School choice is such an interesting topic to explore through a critical realist lens - there’s so much to unpack when considering the real-world structures and mechanisms at play.
