My step 1 is to first not have an anxiety attack before every meeting we have 😅

My supervisor made me laugh the other day in supervision they said ' that sounds like an answer to another question'. In place of saying that's not right. I'm grateful for the supervisor being nice with words. It was my own fault for not listening fully to the first part of their question.

Thank you Andy. This is really timely. Started my PhD journey in September and I'm definitely not maximising my supervisor meetings. Especially when it comes to not chairing the meeting. I'm having my next one tomorrow. I shall try to be more confident and chair it!

Hey, tried the presentation (instead of meeting Minutes/agenda) out this week and it was an absolute hit with my supervisors and finished 2 minutes ahead of time, so totally endorsing for future meetings!

These are really good points. Especially a structured meeting, beginning with what was concluded in the previous meeting.

Andy! Your videos are so underrated! I wish I had been told all that before I've started my masters. Eventually, I learned all the things that you mentioned in the video, but my mental health was kinda ruined learning all the mistakes from my own experience. I'd like all students to watch your videos and particularly this one! Many thanks for such great content. Keep it up👏

having an outlook is often the most important part. Nothing is worse than starting a week and not knowing what to do XD

Yes I absolutely agree. The meeting with supervisor could depends on what u have progressed and asking specific questions that help ur Thesis dissertation. I usually contact my supervisor when I need access to certain journal articles. Meeting = update on my progress + asking for advice.

I really liked your suggestion of choosing an exhibition format for the trailers. And I agree with you that chatting about the ideas that are emerging along the way only delays the doctoral thesis in its mission.

I just love all the tips from you Andy. I really think your tips are legit and a lot are untold by anyone before. I've did one SV meeting where I presented a PPT to all my SV and video recorded the session too. It help me a lot in terms of summarizing all the important comments after a few days, because digesting things during the presentation is too much. We do need time to process and take actions of every criticism and comments in an objective manner. Hope to be able to arrange a fortnight meeting for the rest of my PhD journey. Thanks! Very helpful, indeed.

I love you Andy but I study in the real world! 1) The university only allows supervisions every 2 months! 2) I always send my supervisor the work I have done plus an agenda raising the questions I want to raise at least a month in advance. When we speak, he has never read the work nor the adenda. 3) The supervision is only a phone call from him. Usually as he is eating breakfast - never more than 45 minutes 4) I am a stronge chair, but what do you do with a supervisor that just agrees with everything you say and doesn't know the answers to questions or make any suggestions 5) Post-supervision, I always send minutes with action points with dates. He doesn't read those either! 4

Unfortunately, this sounds like a dispassionate supervisor - change them or bring in a secondary/tertiary supervisor, if your university allows so.

You could also seek an unofficial mentor (dont need to seek permission from either your supervisor or university)

These tips are helpful and it feels good to have some kind of confirmation that these problems are common.. Working on my msc thesis and have had so many meetings where my supervisor keeps spilling new ideas and new problems for 1,5 hr long, whereas I was still stuck at the previous problems.. and it has caused me to feel resistant towards having meetings with him at all. Do you have any tips for being more "brutal"/directive in chairing? I don't want to be rude and often let them finish talking (but then often it takes half an hour before I can say anything lol). Any tips are welcome.

Dear Andy, how I finish with a mentor that refuse for 1 year to see my thesis part. We deal for something then the next meeting he change his opinion. He say don'show me until you finish all. I feel like I am in cave without candle.

Thanks for all your work on these videos, it has been really helpful! Do you have any suggestions on how to take negative feedback better? The fact that it is so constant has been a bit demoralizing, and I’m looking for ways to be more open and receive it better.
