I love pheasant hunting. I used to hunt with my bull terrier who didn't know what he was doing but he still scared up alot of birds accidentally. I used to hunt public land and start at the opposite end of the parking area. A strategy that really confused the birds and yielded good results especially late in the season after they had been pursued from the same direction all season. They learn very quick and take off running as soon as they hear the truck door slam. They have excellent hearing.

Do you eat them? Are they more like chicken or duck? What do you do with feathers? You can probably tell we eat venison but I have never had pheasant.
@paullevang54167 жыл бұрын
Mama's gone detecting Pheasant is more like dark turkey meat that's a bit more dry. Very tasty when cooked right! Apple pheasant casserole is great.

You pluck the feathers of course
@mamasgonecreating19676 жыл бұрын
Rektangle I know that. I meant, do you just throw them away, mount them or use them for crafts?
@KKden-vw7zy6 жыл бұрын
Mama's gone detecting Throw them away usually. The tail festhers and the neck feathers are the best keepers.

What GoPro did you film with and what's the battery life?
@IDigHistoryInIowa6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Boock the Hero5. It’s waterproof and has good sound recording for a small camera. Battery life varies i would say at least 1.5 hours if recording 1080 at 60fps. The screen darkens to save battery life while its recording

I hunt public and private land all over Iowa and South Dakota. I haven't seen birds hold this tight in a long time without bad weather, maybe ever. I doubt these were 100% wild birds. The sections of grass are groomed to well and mowed in small sections to limit the birds area. Guessing this is an outfitter or pay to hunt place.

Kyle Pieper nope private land we’ve hunted for years south side of Ogden. The place we got these is right across the highway from town. Opening day was the first cold day we had so I think the were just holding.

I'm on my first hunt up in the TX Panhandle and I wish I could get them to jump. These birds have been running like hell or sitting on my feet (50 mph wind gusts). I'm sure there are way more out here because I see em poking through the grass, but I can't get a flush. I know with snipe it's just variable like that. Sometimes they jump at 50 yd and sometimes they just sit.

Ok, I admit, I am not a bird hunter so forgive me when I ask, what is the beeping that sounds like a metal detector?
@chriswilliams76247 жыл бұрын
In the tall grass you can't always see your dog or when its on point. The beeping lets you know when the dog has gone on point and stopped moving.
@mamasgonecreating19677 жыл бұрын
Chris Williams Cool. Thank you.

Running birds. More and more guys I hunt with are training pointers to trail running birds rather than hold on first scent. I hunt a flusher, so I train my dogs to circle running birds and chase back.
