This race showed the potential Michael had as a sprinter...he usually will turn in 24s the first 50, in here he turned 23.3!! Thats insane for a swimmer that's not a sprinter.

Cavic was right, this totally put swimming back on the map. Sometimes it's not just about who wins, it's about the competition itself. This was awesome, and it was what made me start watching swimming again. Good job both Phelps and Cavic. And Cavic was a great sport about it too.

Phelps is the GOAT, but people don't give Cavic enough credit. He is an outstanding swimmer and a freak of nature. He did, after all, go under 50 seconds in 100 LCM fly. He was just unfortunate to have been out-touched by Phelps 2 years in a row. However, keep in mind that if there had been no Phelps, people would probably refer to Cavic as a legend, as they did Crocker, once upon a time.

It’s not about 0.01 ppl, you just have to understand how much of a monster Phelps is, psychologically speaking. He is a winner .. he just believes deep down that he is gotta win no matter what and does it all the time, even when not being in his best shape. Nothing but respect for him. .. Even notice his body language right before swimmin any final, he looks incredibly stressed even though he won many finals before, it simply shows how much he cares of every single race . He is an example to follow either in sports or any other field.
@guntodd

Harrison Gu silly statement. By your statement, the 3rd placed guy can say if it wasn’t for Phelps and Cavic, everyone would be talking about him.

But living and studying in Serbia has led to appreciate their culture, they've come a long way and Cavic is a perfect example of devotion. Phelps and Cavic are Awesome, World Class Swimmers, I wish i had half the power and knowledge they have

To me, this may actually have been the most satisfying swim of Phelps' career. Obviously the 18 gold medals, and especially the 8 in Beijing were special. He would probably say that the 400 Free Relay in Beijing was the best. But this one was about as personal as you ever see swimming rivalries get. In a sport in which you literally cannot talk trash to each other during the event, this was intense stuff based on all the controversy about their race a year before in Beijing and Cavic talking shit about Phelps ever since. Add to that all the intrigue about Cavic supposedly having a superior suit to Phelps, and Michael touching the wall first had to be incredibly satisfying for him. You can see in his reaction that it's not so much celebration as it is defiance. After a year of shit-talking, Cavic tries to finally be a good sport after losing again and Phelps is just like "Nah."
@afghaaj

It should have be one gold less in Beijing, since Cavic really touched the tile first.

+afghaaj Cavic fucked up the finish in Beijing. He lifted his head up going into the wall. Phelps finished in a streamline. If Cavic kept his head down, or did an extra half stroke, he would have won.

earlier, phelps lost in the 200m freestyle to a swimmer using the special suit while he was using his normal suit. people were saying that phelps only lost because he wasn't using the special suit. so before this race, cavic was doing an interview about how he would buy phelps that special suit so that phelps wouldn't have an excuse if he lost. but phelps won with his normal suit so thats y u see him in the end showing off his suit.

I don't know man... Phelps practically lived in the pool his whole life. He never took a day off, not Christmas, not his birthday, nothing. The only break he's ever taken was after the Olympics after literally swimming most of his life. You can say he has the body for it and the genetics, but I really do think his #1 attribute is the amount of effort and time he puts into what he does.

any effort which creates less drag. His "short" legs allso provides perfect balance in the turns and a powerflull kick, which is his trademark. This combined with his machine like work out regiment and his competitiveness, and his mental strength, makes him the best swimmer in the world. Other facts he burnes 4000 calories each workout, his heart pumps 8 gallons of blood every minute 2x as much as a average man.
