That spring, the publicity department pulled out all the stops in promoting Don Bosch, who was supposed to be the next Willie Mays. He came to the Mets from the Pirates, who threw in Don Cardwell. Cardwell started on Opening Day in '67.

Whitey was right about recommending Matlack as top pick.

Thanks for sharing. Ron Bloomberg became the first designated hitter in the major leagues in 1973. Whitey Herzog’s draft pick of Jon Matlack turned out well. Whitey went on to become a good baseball manager. This was the start of good things for the Mets and for Tom Seaver.

5:08-"especially this one" according to Lindsey Nelson-that's Nancy Seaver.

As seen @ 4:41 in Seaver's first start, the season opened with outfield walls painted a very light color. Never found out why, but by June the wall was repainted the dark green. It was obvious early on that Tom was special. At ASG, GTS was getting ready when Lou Brock assumed he was a clubhouse kid asked Tom to get him a Coke and Seaver obliged. He faced Yaz several times in ASG's and in '75 gave up a homer in Milwaukee. Ironic that McCarver was his catches at the end, both had long careers as broadcasters in NY later on. A banner at Shea then stated "To err is human (Swoboda), to forgive is a Mets fan". There would not be any other Seavers. BTW - It's Bloom-berg, was AL's first DH in 1973. Matlack was a better pick, had to change number to 32 as Koosman was 36. Joe McDonald looks uncomfortable with Whitey. Joe was an 'original' back in '62 working in player development moving up to GM spot in '74 having to deal away Seaver in '77 and leaving when new owners came in '80. Had GM stints with Cardinals and Tigers. Retired and living in Lakeland Fl. area, his son Jody has been a fixture on sports radio in NY & Philly and nationally on CBS Radio. Commissioner Eckert was not one of the worst at that job, but he was out of his element and left by end of '68. Matlack's motion was tweaked in minors. Odd seeing catcher wearing 41. Nolle looking unusually relaxed throwing. Hodges remembered Agee from American League. Unfortunately, Agee was beaned early in spring '68 and didn't get back to form until '69. Al Jackson had some unfortunate timing, 1960 he was in Pirates minor leagues, did not appear in '67 series and sold by Mets to Reds in June '69. Mets gave up on Amos Otis assuming they had outfield spots sewn up for a while, even tried to work him as 3rd baseman to fix a chronic problem after Ed Charles retired. A-O would have been a good long-term solution for the 70's. Another good posting, thanx...

This is pure gold. Thank you for sharing this. This is like a Time Machine back into my childhood. Loved seeing Tom Terrific, Buddy, Ed Kranepool and even Nolan Ryan at the beginning of their careers. Even Whitey Herzog, a protege of Casey Stengel was a huge part of the NYM in those days. Where has the time gone??

They never should have let Whitey get away. Herzog told it like it was; he wasn't going to be anyone's Yes Man. He told Grant to his face that he didn't know a hill o'beans about baseball.

The Mets did well with their first draft choice, and that prospect Nolan Ryan also turned out to be a major leaguer. So did Steve Renko, but not as a Met.

Their first ever amateur draft pick at the very first MLB amateur selection event in 1965 a number two overall, was pitcher, LES ROHR(shown in the video), and in ‘66 it was catcher, STEVE CHILCOTT, neither ever made it big with ROHR not playing in the bigs for long and CHILCOTT one of three first overalls in the MLB DRAFT, to have never played in the Majors. Matlack turned out to be a better draft pick than very first MLB DESIGNATED HITTER, BLOMBERG(bloom burg) who could hit well, but was never a great fielder, and could not stay healthy. RYAN was taken in the twelfth round of ‘65, SEAVER in the tenth. The KC A’s picking first overall in ‘65 took a guy named RICK MONDAY.. Yeah, in the outfield..he did alright. Just ask the flag burners of ‘76 about MONDAY..or the ‘81 EXPOS. In the early years of the draft, the A’s picked 10 future MLB’ers who were almost all on their THREE CONSECUTIVE WORLD SERIES CHAMPS IN THE 1970’s. Ironically, that WSERIES CHAMPS OAKLAND list did not include MONDAY who by that time was a CHICUB, and later an LA DODGER. MATLACK won despite a lack of run support on lousy teams, other than three seasons combined with the METS AND RANGERS. He was a three-time ALL STAR, and was the NL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR IN 1972.. Yep..

@@robertsprouse9282 The Mets passed on Reggie Jackson when they drafted Chilcott. They felt they had plenty of outfielders, but needed a catcher. Steve Renko was sent to Montreal in the Donn Clendenon trade in 1969.
