You are so sweet! I had tears in my eyes when you spoke of your gramma and how she’d make slippers for everyone! When I was 14 I too self taught how to knit as my mom left us and by the time I had my firstborn at 21 I was able to knit baby clothes! I remain to make all kinds of crochet and knits but these I’ve never made so I’m going to try!! Almost 59 years old and still learning and loving it!! Lol May the Lord bless you and your family!!

So nice to see someone else knitting the way I do too! This is how I learned as a child. Then I seen everyone else do it the other way. Then one day I was reading a knitting book where it mentioned the two styles and then I didn't feel so much an oddball. I had learned the European style. That made sense to me because my mother is German and that's how she learned. I appreciate the detailed explanation. Thank you for this video.

Brinn, It's so nice to see someone doing another version of the checkerboard type slippers. I hope you don't mind if I helped answer a question as I have been knitting checkerboard slippers for many years now. My mom made me a pair when I was a child. I say each to their own when it comes to knitting methods. Good on you for learning to knit and doing a tutorial for others to enjoy an item that is so popular.

I remember the ladies at church selling these at the church bazaar, and I wanted to learn how to make them . I looked at one video but I don’t have the colors I want I want to use autumn colors to make it look like corn on the cob. It’s a little hard to find those colors in a variegated yarn but I figured I could do variegated and a solid color maybe yellow and try this outthis time after I watch your video, I’m going to search online to see what I can find

The original phentex slipper pattern actually has the flaps on the ends, and in instructions tells you to sew up the gore which would mean fold over the flap and sew it with yarn so it's puffed like the rest! That is the oldest original pattern!!! So if that does happen just a tip they can still and will be fine if sewed over each other to look like other stripe before sewing seams up !!!!

To make a womens slipper size 7-9 how many cast on stitches do I need to use ? Thank you, so far this is the easiest video on learning to make slippers.

It is really going to depend on your yarn and needle size! Sorry that's not the most helpful advice, but there is no rule for that. As long as you are casting on in multiples of 8, you can work with any number. What I do is try 36 stitches to start, and if it doesn't look like enough I keep going. I have definitely had several slippers where I knit several rows and then had to take it all apart because it didn't look like the right size. I'm glad you've found the video helpful, happy knitting!

You will have to do a little math. The pattern I use for these slippers is based on multiples of 6 sts. For example, 6 sts to block and 12 blocks across. So I cast on 72 sts and made mine 9 blocks long before decrease rows for a total of 10 blocks. This created a slipper fits me as a average size 6. So, in following her pattern for multiples of 8 sts, 13 blocks across 8x13= 54 sts to cast on and then make them as long as you need. Also, it helps if you know what size shoe person wears or length of their foot. Hope this helps.

I have no clue what the grey and blue one is, but the green ones use Lion Brand yarn and the others are either Loops and Threads or Bernat
