I hate semantic arguments not properly delivered. It seems Jase is trying to stress that Jesus/THS/God being in you is like some Disney movie with little creatures pulling levers and pushing switches inside a person. I'm with Phil. Yes Jesus/THS/God is in us, but they are PART of us, not some beneficial parasite living in there that just happens to do good. Yes the OLD 'I' is dead, but there is still an "I" in layman's terms, though to be more grammatically accurate the phrase should be "we" can do good as in "I + Jesus/THS/God".

As with most things, it's BOTH. We are not yet in our perfect, renewed bodies. So our imperfect shells are still a part of it as is our own unique personalities. Otherwise we would see all 4 gospels as carbon copies, in stead they are from the unique lens of perspective and moment of faith each author brought to the work of writing.

Great show! Just a thought: the book of James talks about in 2:18 “I will show you my faith by my works.” Gentlemen because we are crucified with Christ and adopted sons and daughters our desire and actions will reflect it. This is Sanctification and it’s only worked out through faithfulness and the Holy Spirit. We have two natures the Flesh and the Spirit. Before our salvation we only knew sin because we were sin. But because we have been saved by grace our works and deeds will prove it. Matthew chapter 7 “not every one who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of God, but he who does the will of my father.”

I Agree 💯! So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. Matthew 7:17‭-‬20 ESV

I love how Zach articulates the gap between the concepts of: 1) Phil desiring to obey Jesus by pleasing Him through actions motivated by his heart matured by the Holy Spirit, AND 2) Jase admitting that he cannot desire to obey Jesus UNLESS the Holy Spirit motivates his heart to do so. I love Zach! Thank you, brother!

I encourage you to read God's word daily. Addiction is in the mind where the enemy messes with your thoughts and implants lies. Renew your mind through the washing of His word. The more you grasp who God is the more empowered you will be as His child. And you can only get to really know Him by reading His word. To make it easy get yourself a one year bible. Get one that's divided into daily old testament new testament psalms and proverbs readings. Spend some time in prayer daily. Ask Him to speak to you every day as you read His word. Truly commit yourself to Him. Then...get ready for your life to change! My mother has struggled with alcohol for over 20 years and it wasnt until she got serious about the things I've just suggested that she finally got set free from it. Hallelujah! Thank you Jesus! Jase, I agree with you because of this. Every time I entertain the thought that "I got this" when it comes to making my own decisions about what is good for me to do, I fail. The lesson of my righteousness being as filthy rags is not just a verse to me. It has been proven over and over. It is The Holy Spirit that gives me any desire to do good and if I allow myself, my tendencies are to take credit for those acts that would never have been my idea but for The Spirit of God living in me.

They needed to break out the part where he who abideth in Christ sinneth not. Phil should have hammered that home because I believe that was his intent and idea all along, but make no bones about it, abiding in Christ is a daily moment by moment choice that includes saying yes to the Holy Spirit’s prompting and no to worldliness.

@A.A.Ron Davis She did not say the Holy Spirit is a sidekick. That's a classic straw man. When God saves us, he doesn't take away our freewill. He makes all things new and gives us a new "wanter". He doesn't want robots. He has all glory, with or without you and me. When God tells us, "welcome in my good and faithful servant". Is He welcoming himself?? We were "buried with Christ in death" BUT "raised with him in life"! Christ works with and through us!

I believe the spirit lives in me and guides me. The issue comes when I stumble and sin. If "I" were dead and it's only the spirit in me, then I would not be to blame? I believe these semantic issues are the reason we have so many religions and make it hard to bring unbelievers to Christ, because they feel even we can't agree. Sometimes we need to let these things go. I work at a job that has me alone and working outside year round. Your podcast has filled my time with direction for my walk with Jesus. Thank you.

I definitely like what Jase is saying for the simple fact that for 32 years I went to church and did “good things” and was known as being a good boy or a good young man. When I was truly born again about 2 1/2 years ago, I finally realized that I believed that I was saved my entire life because of things that I did. “I” said the prayer, “I” walked the isle, “I” read my Bible, “I” told people about the gospel of Jesus Christ. It wasn’t until I was regenerated by the Holy Spirit that I finally understood that I was counting on my righteousness to be saved. So basically...Cross + My Works = Salvation. This is what Paul was opposing in the book of Galatians. I’ll even take it a step further and say that I believe that faith is a gift from God and not something you can do on your own. I think Paul tells us to do good but then let’s us know ultimately that it’s not us but Christ in us.

I'm with Phil on this one because the I that is being commended to do good is the new I that has been reborn and led by the Spirit. The I that has been crucified in Christ is the old man. Phil is focussed on our new identity in Christ. If we are focussed on our new identity in Christ, we are more likely to do good and glorify Christ who lives in us. Constantly reminding ourselves that we are bad, sinners, etc impacts how we live. Part of being good is being humble and thankful realising that my goodness wouldn't be possible without the Spirit living in me.

GREAT episode. Jace you are 100% correct. Our family has gone through this very debate for 30 years. We go through it under the question of "once saved always saved" or not, but it is the same debate. So let me ask you Phil this one question. The things you do today that are good, feeding the homeless, giving to the poor, spreading the Word of God, would you have done them before the Holy Spirit came into your heart? Then how can you say it is you doing good and not Him that is living through you? Another way to phrase it is "living in the Spirit". When you submit your actions to the Spirit within you then you do Godly things, but that is God working through you, not you. When you chose to live in your own strength (lose your temper, or fall to another temptation) you are living in YOUR strength and it never ends well. We make choices constantly in every thing we do and when we chose OUR way we are not good, but when we chose to live in the Spirit and let Him make our decisions we act on the Good within us. Great show, loved it and love you guys, you are truly a blessing. Never stop studying/discussing the Word.

Congratulations on 500K! What a wonderful witness and reach! 🙌🏻 it’s quite a debate, but we all understand it is God’s power and grace that keeps us (inclined) on the journey towards Him and becoming more like Him 💙🙏🏻 Much love to you all!

I always love the show. I always super get where Jase is coming from. When I try to do good myself it’s like I’m resurrecting my dead selfish prideful self who can only do bad. When I let go and let God and willingly am led and am more open and obedient I, “Walking humbly”, my mistakes done feel shameful but covered and my goods don’t feel my own but naturally for and of God.

In sanctification, the Holy Spirit "works in you , both to will and to work " according to God's purpose, enabling His people to fulfill their new, godly desires( Philippians 2:12,13). Christian's become increasingly Christlike, as the moral profile of Jesus ( "the fruit of the Spirit") is progressively formed in them (2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 4:19; 5:22-25). Always remember, God calls His children to holiness, and graciously gives what He commands (1 Thesssalonians 4:4, 5:23). Love your show!!

In rebut to Phil...IMO when we do good; feed the homeless, help the poor, help our neighbor, etc...many times WE get more out of it than the person we helped, we feel better about ourselves as a Christian...we thank the holy spirit for that gesture and it propels us to it more often and to spread the Good News

My take is this for what it's worth. The holy spirit lives IN us not FOR us. In other words we are still who we are but now have the holy spirit inside us also to help guide us along if that makes sense. It does to me. Thank you for the great topic to think about. God bless

Man is justified by faith alone in Christ alone but the means is by Grace alone all of which are for and to the Glory of God alone. If one has made a decision to serve God it is of Grace not of man's own free will because the heart is wicked and evil we where conceived and born in sin man cannot and will not make a decision to serve the Lord unless God has made that possible by the means of God's Grace. He who began a good work in the true believer will complete it. I think you're on to something Jase keep it up. I'm encouraged to see you all zealous for truth.

It has always been my understanding that once you live in Christ, the good doing comes from WANTING to do it to please Him. Because He wants us do, and we are doing our best to be obedient and we do it out of love for Him.

@32:45 - Best way to explain what Jase is saying is like this. What Jase is saying is that life is like riding a bicycle. In the natural, we ride that bike and our hands are on the handlebars. When we are saved, we take our hands off the handle bars, and Christ steers. We still peddle the bike, but Jesus is steering. That gives us the same picture of works moving forward, but the direction is guided by God.
