I dreamed yesterday that my high school class went to a DOWN concert, and after the concert everybody had to do an essay of the message of every song and also there was a press conference with Philip aswell. AWESOME; he shook my hand and I almost pooped my pants. I mean, the dream seemed so long, I can remember the concert hall and every song they played. That dream was so awesome.

It is undeniable that Phil seems pretty burnt out , but you have to admit that he has tremendous courage to still put himself out there. He is still a human being like the rest of us, with all of his flaws and his strengths, who has made music that speaks volumes in terms of its impact on heavy music. To all those who delight in his dysfunction, I say shame on you. I respect him for making the attempt to cope with life and convey some fragment of how he views the world with us. RESPECT

Great post. I always thought that Phil never got as much cred for his lyrics that he deserves. When I see him I think of him as he was as teenager, like 15 years old. He must have had a hell in school, and probably made school a hell for others as well, but still, there you have him: a smart, thoughtful, sensitive person. Man, what an asset (I might use this word wrong now, sorry for that) he must have been, but it seems no one paid attention. Great interview...best, Sandemose

It's true that Phil's heroin addiction was a big part of why Pantera broke up. But as a man he deserves respect, he has contributed so much to metal and many different kinds of music in general. He is not perfect, and he made many mistakes, but he is only a man after all. He seems very remorseful of the way things went down, and I'm sure he regrets leaving Pantera. But this is a great musician here, he is not just some junkie. Phil is an icon, and he should be respected.

from what i read in an interview he denied ever using heroine and he said that he was hooked on pain medication that he received after a back injury which led to the demise of his relations with pantera. he also stated that he was breaking that addiction and was goin to try and remain sober from those meds.

i love phil, but he's on something. addiction has its ups and downs. anyone that has seen down knows it's pretty obvious when phil is dabbling. i've seen down 3 times in philly and the second time he finished the set on his back. the last time he was totally sober and it showed because his vocals were right on and he was just really on point. it was one of the best concerts i ever saw. just because he says he got clean doesn't mean he hasn't relapsed. opiates are a bitch.

I've met him after 2 Down shows since this interview, and he seems to be clean. He does drink beer, and smokes the weed...but I don't think he's doing the heavier stuff. You can really tell when you see and talk to him in person...you can see the difference from what he was a few years ago.
